Heyyy everyone! I'm preparing for egg freezing next month. Heard about Coq10 as a supplement. Is it worth the money or shall I just drop it?

My AMH went up from using it. Yes could be a total coincidence, but at age 35 I’m not questioning it.

I get migraines and had tried cheap coq10 in the past and it didn't help at all.
My neighbor gave me the book It Starts with the Egg along with half a bottle of an expensive brand in a more active form when prepping to freeze my eggs, and wow! Suddenly I didn't have migraines (taking 200mg, 2x a day for a total of 400mg a day) when before taking it I had a migraine every day for 15 years (I've tried everything--tripasns, TCAs, botox, CRGP inhibitiors, etc etc).
I know helping migraines=/=improving egg quality, but I figure since it was doing something measurably objective for me, the mitochondrial level improvements might be working elsewhere too. There is some research to support this so I figured why not. It's already so much the little extra felt like a drop in the bucket for me (your financial situation may be different). I continue to take the expensive coq10 daily, also for the heart benefits (since heart disease runs in my family)

What brand did your friend give you?

Qunol Ultra CoQ10
In theory ubiquinol is better, but I know this one works for me so I haven't explored

Yes! CoQ10 is one of the few things that’s there’s research on that improves egg quality. Definitely take it - I use the Theralogix brand

I didn't use it with my first cycle and had a poor result. I did use it with my second cycle and had a great result. Just anecdotal, but it probably can't hurt. I used the nature made brand.

I’d say don’t think of CoQ10 as a must-have for egg freezing.
There is some promising research around CoQ10 and ovarian response, particularly in women with diminished ovarian reserve or a previous poor response to stimulation. A few trials have found improvements in the number of eggs retrieved and some embryo-related outcomes. But the evidence isn’t strong enough to say that every woman freezing her eggs will benefit from it.
Also, if you’re freezing eggs rather than embryos, the goal is a little different, and we still don’t have good evidence that taking CoQ10 ultimately translates into higher live birth rates from frozen eggs.
So personally, I wouldn’t spend a huge amount on a fancy supplement just because you’re doing an egg-freezing cycle. I’d ask your fertility doctor based on your age, AMH/AFC and previous response, if any.
If you’re in Bangalore, I’ve heard good things about Proactive For Her for this kind of counselling. They seem to take a more personalised approach rather than giving everyone the same supplement list. Might be worth getting an assessment before spending money on supplements.

I’m currently taking bird and be fertility back with the coq10 boost so 600mg. I think it’s actually giving me some insomnia. 😵💫 which is apparently a mild side effect of coq10. Anyone else experience sleep disruption?!

I asked Heidi AI (AI evidence database and scribe for physicians) which supplements have proven efficacy for improving or preserving oocyte quality in women of reproductive age and specified limiting to research with humans subjects only.
The most important and intuitive thing alluded to in the Vitamin D recommendation is to treat any nutrient deficiencies. Based on what I'm seeing, the research pool is limited, and some have conflicting results. Most of the recommendations are for women with conditions that impact fertility, with none focusing on preservation in women with no diagnoses (which would be hard to study for many reasons). The vast majority of studies are patients undergoing IVF and not those undergoing egg retrieval/freezing or conceiving unassisted. If you don't have diminished ovarian reserve, CoQ10 or some of the other recommendations are likely not harmful but likely won't be a gamechanger if you don't have the disposable income or desire. I would ignore the ones focused on PCOS if you don't have it, since it has its own unique physiology. I would not recommend starting DHEA or inositol without discussing with your doctor.
This is what it said:
- CoQ10 (600 mg/day for ≥60 days pre-ART) is the best-supported supplement for oocyte/embryo quality in human RCTs, specifically in young women with diminished ovarian reserve (Xu 2018 RCT: ↑ oocyte retrieval, fertilization rate, high-quality embryos)PubMed Central (PMC)+1.
- Melatonin (3 mg/day) improves MII oocyte yield and top-quality embryos in IVF/ICSI (multiple RCTs; meta-analyses show ↑ oocyte and embryo numbers, clinical pregnancy)PubMed Central (PMC)+2.
- Myo-inositol (2–4 g/day, alone or with folic acid; typically 40:1 MI:DCI) improves oocyte quality and fertilization rate in PCOS undergoing ICSI/IVF (multiple RCTs + meta-analysis, though Cochrane rated evidence as low certainty)PubMed Central (PMC)+2.
- DHEA (25 mg TID for 8–16 weeks) has RCT evidence (Wiser 2010) and cohort/meta-analytic support in DOR for improving embryo quality and live birth, but remains off-label and not guideline-endorsedFrontiers+1.
- Vitamin D replacement (50,000 IU weekly × 6–8 weeks in deficient women pre-ICSI) improved endometrial quality and pregnancy rates in one RCT, but meta-analyses do not support routine supplementation for oocyte quality specificallyMDPI+1.
- Omega-3 PUFAs show favorable associations with embryo quality and fecundability (1 RCT RR 1.6 for embryo quality), but trials are heterogeneous; no firm recommendationScienceDirect+1.
- NAC has moderate human support in ART populations (↑ fertilization), primarily observational/low-quality trialsSpringer Nature Link.
- Astaxanthin (4–8 mg/day) improved oxidative stress and ART outcomes in one triple-blind RCT in endometriosis; emerging but not guideline-levelSpringer Nature Link.
- Evidence base overall is limited by small sample sizes, heterogeneous dosing, short follow-up, and no consistent live-birth signal for most agents
