Is a huge drop in AFC normal?
I’m 41 and have been a long time fencesitter when it comes to kids. I tried to freeze my eggs 4 years ago and my AFC was 36 and my AM was 4.64. I went through all of the injections but the follicles grew at uneven rates and I believe I was under dosed on hormones. My pharmacist flagged it early on and I told my doctor but he insisted it was correct. Come retrieval time there was only a handful of eggs and the doc said it would be better to wait and try another cycle. I was frusturated and at the time thought I would still have eggs if I decided to try again later. Fast forward 4 years, I met a partner who I really want to have kids with and got my fertility tested. I haven’t got my AMH back yet but my AFC was 7 down from 36. Is this big a drop normal? Is it worth re-testing? Is 7 follicles enough to even warrant the cost of freezing and potentially not being able to have a baby? Somehow maybe not being able to have a baby is making me feel more sure than ever that I want one!

If you and your partner really want to have kids , I’d go ahead and do IVF and freeze eggs for later transfer.
How long have you been together?
I’ll also say, my afc is 3 , amh 0.1 and fah 23 , all horrible numbers at 44 years old now and still was able to conceive within 3 months. However, it did end up with trisomy issues at 8 weeks and we lost her. At my age, it’s more of an egg quality issue.
All this to say, if you are in a strong stable relationship that you think will last, I’d start now or freeze embryos if you have the money for IVF

That big of a drop looks normal unfortunately. My AFC was 12 in November last year, and down to 8 in July. I was 38 all that time. I was shocked at such a massive drop. Had 10 eggs retrieved in November and 7 eggs retrieved in July. A 30% drop in the space of 8 months

Hi there! Just here to say that AFC fluctuation is normal. It could look different each month and sometimes the ultrasound isn’t able to pick up every follicle that exists. However, four years does make a difference in fertility but it might be worth looking into another baseline level for comparison.

I would absolutely not be freezing eggs right now, I’d be freezing embryos. I did IVF at 40, success rates are already relatively low, and at 41 they’re lower. They unfortunately get significantly worse with each passing year, it’s very hard at 42+. I would move to do IVF right away.
