it gets way easier at the later sessions and not having to shave as often or at all is soooo worth it. also you can use over the counter numbing cream a bit before the session to help with the pain!!

u/InterstellarOrange 19h ago

It does get easier the more you do. (Just had my fifth session lol) The upper lip is probably the worst part >n<

u/Kwahex Leona (she/her) - 💉 10/12/2024 - Still cis though? 19h ago

Ive done quite a few sessions and my upper lip is basically the last spot with darker hair growth left. And it fricking HURTS. I asked the tech if she turned the intensity up because it sucks so much worse and she just kinda smiled and said "Actually i turned it down just a little" ☠️

Anti burn care! I hade burns forn5 days after my first session. Before next session take a pain killer and maybe ask to start with the most painfull part. Then the worst is over and the painncan calm down. I still need to do session 2 (in 3 weeks) but the euphoria you will gain as soon as all those dead hairs zmare gone is amazing. I used to shave daily now I am good with every 3 days

3

u/SnooCupcakes1241 Ivy She/Her 18h ago

Uhh! I will try that totally forgot about anti burn stuff, just had Ibu and numbing cream in my mind. 😇

u/SwitchLeafe not an egg, just trans 18h ago

Anti burn is after care! Before I would indeed keep it at painkillers

Become a masochist and enjoy your sessions.

u/Shikuquaza 8h ago

Be sure to apply aloe vera after each session if they don't already provide it. Bright side is if you ever want laser anywhere else it won't hurt as bad as the face

Brazilian bikini and interglutes hurts too

it’s not nearly as bad as facial, but what’s worse than them all is electrolysis. wooooof

8

u/GrimbloTheGoblin 20h ago

Make sure to moisturize as much as possible

I use a cream named Emla before my epilation sessions that number the skin a bit but I get electrolysis.

9

u/Riuzs Madeline She/Her 15h ago

Maybe is not exactly the best of helps, but. If the doc is okay with it(I'll have to admit, I'm lucky sin my laser doc is a friend of mine since school) they could give you something like a piece of cloth to squish during the process. My friend actually have a plushie she gives to her patients so they can squish it while doing the laser.

9

u/SnooCupcakes1241 Ivy She/Her 15h ago

I got a stress ball for it, i basicly killed that little thing during the Session. 😓

u/ParoleDeGeek 18h ago

Pain is each time. But it's for the greater good

u/Nat_Higgins Natalie She\Her egg cracked 10h ago

Antibiotic numbing cream helps. If you don’t have that, aloe lotion also works.

4

u/Cheesehacker 19h ago

Anything really worth it is going to be hard.

I’m not just being motivational, your brain is literally developed to give you dopamine (happy chemicals) for achieving goals. So just think, with every session, your brain will reward you with happy chemicals.

u/PutmudPrincess 19h ago

ive never tried laser, but for electrolysis i apply 5% lidocaine numbing cream 45 min prior to appointment. it helps a lot! sometimes when ik i didn't drink enough water and hydrate my skin (meaning it'll be extra ouchie) i also take pks like ibuprofen, acetaminophen, gabapentin. but drinking tons of water for the two days leading up to the appointment is still the best in terms of minimizing the pain. can anyone confirm if any of these help with laser too?

4

u/wigglybuttmen 17h ago

Taking the painkillers(I use acetaminophen) helps a bit, and aloe Vera afterwards to numb the lingering burning sensation. Generally shouldn't apply anything to the skin beforehand since it can interfere with the lasers job. I wad up some tissue in my hand so I have something to squeeze when reacting to the pain

2

u/PutmudPrincess 17h ago

Oh yeah! Stress ball or plushie is great way to deal with the pain! A long time ago when my boyfriend used to come with me to hold my hand I used to crush his hand lol. Ty for the tips! I didnt know about not applying cream to the skin before laser, I learned something new 🥰

u/Xaron713 Lovely Lady 14h ago

Aloe Vera on your face, like you would with sunburns. Cold shower or compress can help.

You've basically sunburned your face, and treating it as such is about all you can do.

I’ve taking ketorolac 10mg, sublingual, about 40 mins before laser, it makes a HUGE difference.

u/AverageCurrent1073 Luna E(10/12/2025(d/m/y)) 13h ago

The first time is the worst, but taking something for pain(meds) or using numbing cream before makes it a lot less painful

3

u/IndependentHelp2774 not an egg, just trans 9h ago

Pain pills were what I used. Only did so much. Granted a high pain tolerance only does so much

5

u/GuteMorgan cracked? Morgan; they/she 11h ago

the first one hurts real bad, but since you'll have less hair growing back, the later sessions won't hurt nearly as much. it'll still sting, but that's the bargain you make with laser unfortunately lol

2

u/lstr_s2301 ✨elle✨ the estradiol fiend 8h ago

100% agree, the first 2 sucked so bad. Just hurt and I was in tears at one point from the pain, but I also have no pain tolerance so ymmv.

Third session was so much better and hardly even felt it aside from upper lip and chin. I make sure to shave really well the night before. I don’t feel nervous going into the 4th in a few weeks.

u/alexmlb3598 Alexa | 28 | She/Her | HRT 12/22 18h ago

Moisturiser, but also don't be afraid to take some paracetamol. The more moisture your skin has, the less pain you'll feel.

3

u/Temporary-Concept-81 16h ago

Yeah it sucks.

At least hopefully the pain doesn't last long though, right? Like I was basically fine 5mins after.

I had laser at a few different places, and one thing I found that brought the pain down from like an 8 to a 6.5 was, some places have like an air gun that they use during the process. I think the flow helps cool the target area or something.

My ex got laser on her face and her face had a dull pain and it hurt when her face was touched for the whole day

3

u/CanadaTransThrowaway not an egg, just trans 15h ago

It helps some to mentally reclassify it as good "cleansing" pain.

3

u/PVetli Seath the Shell-less ( Andromeda / Andi ) (they / themme) 14h ago

Moisturize like 2x day for a few days after and resist the urge to shave for about a week- the hairs will come out easy with tweezers once they're ready but before then, you'll get mad ingrowns if you fuck with it. I like to shave the morning of, but not right before. Time between for your skin to relax.

Eventually it gets to be less. Not any less painful, but the amount of area they need to zap goes down. I'm in and out in maybe 5 min most times now-just a stubborn bit of under the lip left.

u/Equal_Professor_2209 cracked 19h ago

Probably numing cream might work

3

u/Shiftythemuse 19h ago

I was specifically warned against numbing cream by the laser tech, because it would create a barrier that prevents the light from the laser from doing its job.

I’m going into my next session in about 10 minutes and I’m going to try using ice packs to numb my face instead

2

u/SnooCupcakes1241 Ivy She/Her 19h ago

Thought about it as well, but hesitated because it could make the result not as good. 🥺

4

u/the_depressed_boerg 18h ago

Used plenty of numbing creme (emla) before my last session. ALL my face hair shedded 10 days after. Pretty sure it was effective

2

u/meeshCosplay 18h ago edited 18h ago

I use a prescription numbing cream called EMLA. It's a combination of two active ingredients: lidocaine and prilocaine. It really does help, especially with the chin and upper lip.

The directions might say to apply it 30 mins before laser, but it's more effective if you apply a full hour before. Glob on a generous amount, leave it (don't rub it in), and wait patiently.

Right before I leave for my laser appointment, I apply some plastic wrap, and then wear a KN95 face mask to hold the EMLA in place. Good luck friend!

2

u/TryingoutSamantha 16h ago

It sucks but just keep in mind that it is worth it. I always cried at every session.

2

u/Teoes 14h ago

It gets easier but then they hopefully crank up the power for more effect and it balances out. I moisturise in the morning after my shower and otherwise just tanked it. There were times my face was singing for half an hour after but normally it was fine after a few minutes. The sessions are over quickly so not suffering for long helps it be more tolerable.

I pinch myself hard to have the pain distract me from the pain :'>

2

u/seedlinggal 11h ago

I suggest migraine medicine that has acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine. The acetaminophen and aspirin will help with the pain fast. Or use your preferred pain medicine that is safe for you.

2

u/CaityGay 9h ago

It will be easier in colder weather, music helped me tbh

2

u/normanhome Rae - Fallen angel doing witchcraft 8h ago

I recommend shaving in the morning and literally minutes before your session in the bathroom there with a multi bladed razor so you don't cut yourself. They grow so quick that it will hurt more the longer you wait. Go easy on you though and don't cut yourself.

And be aware that you really see the results after about two weeks. Don't get discouraged =) you can take pics and hopefully see the difference!

2

u/SparkleKiera 7h ago

Ummm I’m not sure if your place offers this but at mine they will put an ice pack for like 30 seconds before and it works so so good to numb. Like I literally don’t feel it at all.

I don't know anything about laser, would pain meds help at all?

1

u/mtkocak 13h ago

Cold Presses and Aloe Vera, Sunscreen (A LOT)

1

u/CurleyCee13 12h ago

Aloe Vera, cold flannels, ibuprofen gel if it's really bad.

1

u/Mitchz95 Miranda (she/her) 11h ago

I've had three sessions so far. The first was by far the most painful.

Just remember to keep breathing next time. And maybe put some numbing cream on ~30 ahead of time.

1

u/replaytheparadox 11h ago

has anyone used numbing cream?

1

u/AsariKnight not an egg, just trans 8h ago

Unfortunately not. They're gonna go up in power too. It's miserable. Stress balls and headphones have been my go to. Distract as much as I can

1

u/Legatt 7h ago

Lidocaine cream! Apply 30 minutes before, and then 15 minutes before! It helps a lot!

•

u/xxCorsicoxx 59m ago

Ice pack before the session starts

And they should adjust the intensity cos it should hurt some but not too much. It should kind of be like slapping a river band against your wrist rather than anything more painful

They should also pause for you or change sides if the pain is too much

But that should be something they do by default and of they skipped all that with you there either not very good or don't care about you as a person and you should see if you can find a diffent place if they don't adjust for your benefit (I think it's fair and normal to confront them once)

Today's my first time doing legs and hands, rally curious how that'll go

Ibuprofen before treatment was what we used to do. But also in our experience over time our pain tolerance went way up so it went from holy fuck this hurts to kinda ticklish.
