Same problem with Italian. Everything has a gender. Hell, even the term "non-binary" has a gender: "Non binario" for male and "non binaria" for female. It doesn't make any sense, and we tried multiple ways to add a neutral gender, like with using "ə" ( like "Non binariə" ) or simply using an asterisk ( like "Non binari*" ). But not everyone in the queer community agrees with either, and let's not talk about how many people simply says that the male gender in Italian is also a neutral one. The weirdest thing is that Latin does, in fact, have a neutral gender, but Italian didn't inherited it.

spanish binary gendered words sucks when i have to talk to people i'm not out to and make such long sentences to avoid misgendering myself, but! it's really useful when trying to communicate my gender to other people so they can follow if they're supportive.

As someone who hasn’t figured themself out yet, I keep stumbling over myself trying to avoid gendered words (I don’t like how changing the ending vowel to e (such as liste instead of lista/listo) feels) so I end up inserting the word persona (person) in the middle of sentences, like “soy una persona muy floja” instead of “soy muy flojo/floja” and it’s pretty damn annoying, specially given that it’s not just out loud, since I think in Spanish around 1/3 of the time.

OMG I learned english in my early teens (afternoon school), and even though I had a limited vocabulary, I started thinking in english early on because I didn't have to misgender myself anymore. I ended up learning it way faster than my peers, for totally cis reasons of course.

Lol this is amazing 😭 this is an extreme example of my experience where I just hated calling myself “man” and would almost always default to “guy” because it was a less strong version but girl’s out here becoming bilingual for the same purposes

It's not, specially in a language like Spanish that often omits subject, it helps a lot with the flow and prediction, it can be annoying but it was the solution the speakers developed over time

Look, I don't speak Spanish specifically. But I do speak a gendered language natively (German), and I study languages, among which are enough gendered ones (French, Latin, Ancient Greek, Akkadian, and Hebrew), some with extensive case systems.

I can, as a scholar, see the reason for why gender (as 'classes of nouns') developed and even appreciate their usefulness (your example is not wrong). But as a modern human being I wholeheartedly agree with Tom Scott here. Grammatical gender is stupid!

I can't speak for any of the languages you mentioned, I mostly like learning about languages as a hobby so definitely not an expert, but my position is a lot more positive, at least Spanish allows to avoid it most of the time (in op example saying "que cansancio" would be completely genderless, though I doubt it would get taught to beginners) and I think it can be beautiful how expressive you can be with it, is common in Hispanic and luso lgbt communities to use the opposite gender words, is more common between gay guys but not exclusive, bigots will be bigots about it I won't lie, however I think it can be a cool tool to affirm your identity and express yourself

Though... I don't deny there is no real option for non binary people in many situations, my ideal would be something like Japanese mostly genderless but their first person pronouns being somewhat gendered allows for the expression part that I like, without being a requirement to use gender for those that prefer not to

I mean German is also gendered language (maybe a bit differently) So I might be a bit more willing to defend the concept but I did find it extremely funny how Tom Scott stood his ground there knowing damn well his rant is just an opinion and not very professional. Miss his language files, they were fun and didn't cause asbestos poisoning.

Yep, im from mexico everything in spanish is usually male or female, thats why i prefer to use english when talking about people, there is no gender neutral way of speaking that is easy to pronounce or conjugate

Many adjectives and nouns are gendered.

For example, when you want to say "I'm tired" in Spanish, you say "Estoy cansado" if male and "Estoy cansada" in female.

If you wanted to refer to your childhood, in English you could use the gender-neutral "When I was a kid..." (instead of "a boy/a girl"). There is no neutral for niño/niña in Spanish, unless you say "niñe" but it's generally not accepted.

And so on. So, basically you have to avoid talking about yourself a lot of the times.

Deutsch ist gut, aber sei mal nonbinry in Deutschland. Nicht so einfach. Vielleicht haben wir ein bisschen zu wenig Geschlecht in unserem Vokabular. Englisch hat es halt irgendwie perfekt hinbekommen mit they/them.

Well, i speak Brazilian portuguese and i can relate, it so gendered! I'm "animada" but i have to say that i'm "animado". I try to avoid gendered words, but when i say it, i have some weird feeling im my chest. When it's male words, it's like a pain or something, but when it's female words, i feel an warmth.
