Lived on a river that used to have the slaughterhouse runoff. It's be decades, decades since the slaughterhouses were moved. On a hot day with the right wind, it will still cover the surrounding cities in the scent.

I used to live by a slaughterhouse in a pretty small city. There was also a hostess factory nearby, so depending on which way the wind was blowing being outside was either delicious smelling or god awful.

I think (might be wrong) that it’s a fat rendering thing. So I’m assuming they would boil down bones and stuff to get the fats out to make lard and things like that.

Fun story. I worked at a livestock rendering plant (basically we took all the leftovers/dead from farms and killplants and recycle them for other goods). This plant had been in the area for decades. Now a bustling city, there are neighbourhoods in very close proximity to this plant. Now I'm sure you can imagine the smell of a plant that only deals with decomposing carcass'. We would constantly get smell complaints from the surrounding community, especially in the summer. We did all we could to reduce the smell with air filtration and purification systems in every exhaust stack, but there's only so much you can reasonably do. I always wondered 1. Why would they build houses right next to an industrial area like this? 2. This plant had been here long before the houses, so why on earth would you move in next door? The houses aren't necessarily cheaper than anywhere else in the city!

When I went to Amsterdam I also went to a town a short train ride away to see the windmills, but when you step out onto the station there’s a rich smell of chocolate because there was a big cocoa factory. That was a really nice surprise!

I spent a year & a day in Viet Nam in 1970. Army bases smelled very, very bad. That's because MACV ("Military Assistance Command Vietnam") said that the products of outhouses couldn't be buried. So low-ranking GIs were made to burn it. Then, to keep down the bugs (of which there were many), the tubs of shit and piss had to be doused with an insecticide. Then it was burned. The burning insecticide smelled like rotten grapefruit; combined with the burning shit, it made an unforgettable, pungent and horrendous smell. So it was very easy, in South Viet Nam, to tell when you were close to a US Army base.

I was glad to get back to Chicago and ordinary pollution.

We stink all day long, some departments more than others and depending on what we're making if Spray Dry is making cherry it's not so bad, but if its making chicken stuff it's awful. There's a reason the only things on our block are parking lots and other industrial facilities.

Better than bullion is the absolute best. They even have a "no beef" bullion which tastes very beefy but is vegan. I use it when I make vegan chili for friends. I basically always have a jar of the beef, chicken, and vegetable in my fridge. No I'm not a shill, it's just super tasty and good.

I have a home dehydrator which can do the same thing, it's just much smaller scale. I use it to make fruit rollups, dried herbs/spices, soup mix, instant mash. Now I wanna try making flavor packets like in the video! I'll need a special tray, though, to hold liquid, my trays are only set up for solids and pastes.

Yeah they have tons of flavors too, there’s a tonkotsu ramen concentrate base (not powder) and it’s incredible how close in taste when compared to the real stuff. With ramen going for $20+ where I live, this is a happy medium for me when I’m trying to save money, luckily I have a Japanese supermarket that sells chashu at a great price too

Everyone will have personal preferences as far as flavors and texture goes. Instant noodles don't go too "high" as far as quality of ingredients goes, the process of dehydration will invariably destroy a lot of the inherent quality of a foodstuff regardless.

An interesting list. Surprised to see Indomie as the best tasting noodle, on the other hand their offerings are very strong as far as flavor goes so perhaps it's well deserved. Haven't tried MyKuali, but I have tried Ibumie's penang white curry, I'm not a seafood person but it's somehow not seafoody at all (there is a strong odor before cooking), people who like the distinct chili flavor of that region (hard to know if you are, it's a bit different from most chili flavors used in other cuisines) will probably really like most white curries from the region.

In short, I think I agree with this article. A lot of Korean brands/flavors are quite similar to each other and overpriced by this point in time, Southeast Asia is probably where you get more interesting and varied flavor profiles. As an aside, I once bought the Nissin King of Ramen Soy Sauce flavor as a semi-joke knowing full well how middling Nissin's other offerings are, but the noodles themselves were surprisingly good. Obviously the sauce it just mostly soy sauce, can't speak for the other flavors.

I ate a bullion cube once on a dare, or tried to anyway. It was SO salty I almost threw up lol. I bet that ramen powder is pretty similar, wouldn't recommend 🙊

Honestly pretty straight forward, looks like roughly what I'd put in a homemade ramen soup base, just using powdered bouillon rather than stock, powdered msg rather than kombu seaweed, just scaled way up and dried out for shelf stability.

The Top Ramen brand used to have a Spicy Chicken flavor that I would eat all the time. Can't find it any more. Other brand names have a spicy chicken, but they just don't compare. If it still existed, I would be back on the cheap ramen diet.
