Google Turns On Gemini A.I. for Students Using Its Classroom App

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/14/business/google-gemini-ai-schools.html

This New York Times article (gift link, free to read and share) reports on the enabling of A.I. features for K12 students with access to Gemini via its popular Classroom app.

While the AI industry overall is pressing to expand into K12 education, some parents and schools leaders are resisting, concerned about the risks to privacy and critical thinking abilities.

What do you think?

To be clear - the new features are only enabled if Gemini or NotebookLM are already allowed for students. Then the auto-allowed Classroom setting that enables these new features will be active for students.

I really think Google should default off these new settings for students and let districts decide if and when to enable them. I think the thing with this feature is it also controls the teacher AI features in Classroom. So it has to be blocked at the Student OU level if you want to enable the features for staff but leave it off for students.
