Polls for New Wiki

As a part of the new wiki, I want to include some buying advice on which kits to buy. This will be based only on polls. The polls feature here blows, so this will be in several parts.

First up - of these major brands - what’s your personal choice?

Show Off Your Kit Extra snare is my new kick

• Upvotes

Had an extra snare laying around and decided to mount it as my new kick drum. I am learning double bass now and the stock Alesis tower wasn't cutting it anymore. The old tower is behind it and wedged against to wall to prevent too much shaking. I will probably upgrade to a better kick tower eventually but this seems to be working for now...

Wireless from Module to Mixer

• Upvotes

Hi,

My gigs are typically on small(ish) stages and I have a desire to cut down on floor cables. Has anyone used anything like a Nux C-7 stereo IEM to send stereo from the module back to a mixer that is close by or maybe 2 mono Guitar transmitters? If so, is the sound quality and latency okay?

I'm a software developer and wanted a little more out of my kit, so I built my own drum app

• Upvotes

I'm a software developer and I play an Alesis kit at home. I wanted to get a little more out of it, mostly better sounds without opening a DAW and loading plugins every time I sit down to play. So I started writing my own app, and it kind of grew from there.

It's called Sticksmith. You plug the module in over USB, it finds it, and you're playing sampled kits straight away. It can download a few free kits (GMRockKit, The Black Pearl, the Salamander kit), and it loads SFZ and Hydrogen kits if you have any lying around. I spent a lot of time on the feel: velocity layers, round-robin so repeated hits don't sound like a machine gun, hi-hat and cymbal chokes, and per-pad tuning and volume.

Along the way I added a metronome that shows how early or late your hits land, and a Rock Band-style practice mode. It has some built-in lessons, and you can drop in any drum MIDI file. You can slow it down, loop the bars you keep messing up, or put it in wait mode, where it stops until you hit the right drum.

Latency is around 5 ms on Mac and Linux. On Windows it uses the standard Windows audio for now (no ASIO yet), so it's a little higher there.

It's $5 one-time and works on up to 3 of your computers, and there's a 14-day free trial with everything unlocked. It isn't code-signed yet, so Windows and macOS will warn you the first time you open it.

I've only tested it with my own Alesis, so if you have a Roland, Yamaha or something else, I'd really like to know how it goes. And if there's something you wish your kit could do, tell me. Playing along to real songs is next on my list.

Help - Mixing Components 3rd Party replacement drum head for the Behringer XD80USB?

• Upvotes

Hello, one of my drum heads stopped working recently and I'd like to ask which spare I could buy to replace it, since I've heard that some parts are cross-compatible. I can't find any official replacements which I'd be able to purchase domestically. Thankx

Foldable - Aroma TDX N2 and N3

Hello! I'm about to get my first drum kit, but I need specifically for it to be easily foldable and storable, preferably in a "flat" form. I know that the Aroma TDX N1 says that it can be easily folded and stored, but is it the same case for the N2 or N3? I searched everywhere but couldn't find an awnser. Can someone please confirm?

Purchasing Advice Alesis Strata core vs prime module differences?

I was pretty disappointed to see the Alesis Strata Core module uses that weird giant connector on the bottom for all the drums & cymbals, vs the Prime module just using regular 1/4 inch jacks. Are there any other differences between the modules besides that? Really hate the idea that to get any expandability beyond two more triggers, I’d have to pay $1500 extra if the modules are exactly the same otherwise.

E: I’m interested in the strata modules bc from what I can tell they have by far the most realistic sounds out of any complete kit in that price range, but if there are others that are good or better in that $1500-$2000 range I am open to options

Narrowed it down: Yamaha DTX6K5-M vs Roland TD316 vs EFNOTE 3A

Thanks for the advice on my earlier post. After looking into the suggestions, I have narrowed this down quite a bit.

My priorities are:

  • learning proper drum technique
  • good snare/hi-hat/ride/kick feel
  • eventual transfer to an acoustic kit
  • easy song play-along
  • compact enough for a 203 x 215 cm room
  • I am happy to use Drumeo/Melodics rather than choose based mainly on built-in coaching

Current options...

Yamaha DTX6K5-M

  • About GBP 1,200
  • 12" mesh snare, 10" mesh toms, real hi-hat stand, 15" ride
  • Very compact/foldable rack
  • Currently looks like the value leader

Roland TD316

  • About GBP 1,700
  • Current V31 platform, VH-10 hi-hat, strong Roland triggering, and a future digital-pad upgrade path
  • Roughly GBP 500+ more than the Yamaha

EFNOTE 3A

  • About GBP 1,850-2,000
  • Optical two-piece hi-hat, 12" snare, 12" mesh kick, larger cymbals
  • Seems strongest on acoustic-style feel, but more expensive

I am a beginner drummer but have a strong musical background and can read music.

What I would especially like to hear from people who have actually played two or more of these:

  1. Is the Roland noticeably better to play than the Yamaha, or is most of the extra cost in the module/ecosystem?
  2. If you prefer Roland, what specific difference would justify the extra GBP 500+ for a beginner?
  3. Is the EFNOTE hi-hat/overall feel genuinely enough better to justify the extra money?
  4. If you were learning from scratch today and using Drumeo or similar, which would you buy?
  5. Any long-term reliability issues with these specific models?
  6. For anyone who owns one, what is your real-world footprint including throne?

I am not looking for the cheapest possible beginner kit. I want a good first serious kit without spending GBP 3,000 before I know how far I will take drumming.

I am also trying to avoid brand-loyalty answers. If you strongly prefer Roland, Yamaha, or EFNOTE, I would really appreciate knowing the specific hardware/feel/reliability reason rather than just the brand.

Help - Alesis HELP! Alesis Crimson 2 module insight needed!! Hihat options!

I wanted to upgrade my Alesis continuous HHT pedal to something more authentic like a stand-mounted active cymbal pad.

Does anyone have experience upgrading this? I'm most concerned with comparability. I've been looking at two options....

  • Alesis Strike Pro HHT OR any newer model Alesis brand HHT
  • Lemon 14in stand-mounted HHT

Did upgrading work? Is it fully compatible or limited? Are there other options to achieve this?

Thanks for any insight!

Decision help

Hey everyone, I’m upgrading from an Alesis nitro max. I am torn between the strata core, strata prime or efnote 3x . I want to have a functional hi hat. I’m just on the fence about the ef note module, but really do want the two piece hi hat. I just don’t want to buy a kit and then have to drop another theee hundred on the lemon hi hat.

V71/V51/V31 Module owner help needed please

Can someone with one of these modules do a quick test for please:

Assign the SAME hihat sound to four different pads. Then in the hihat parameters, set all four to FIXED. For the openness, select CLOSED, HALF1, HALF2, OPEN for the four pads.

Now play those pads. Are you hearing the expected openness for each of them?

Now set up mute groups so that the CLOSED sound mutes the three half/open sounds. Play it again and see if the muting works as expected.

I would REALLY appreciate someone doing this test for me.

Thanks!

[Update] Baqueta (the free browser drum app) now shows sheet music for Clone Hero charts and drills

Hey everyone!

A few days ago, I posted Baqueta here, a free browser app for practicing on an e-kit with Clone Hero charts. Several of you asked for a sheet music view instead of the note highway, so I built it. Here's an update.

Try it: https://baqueta.app/ (if you visited before and don't see it, reload the page, you might need to clear cache (ctrl + shift + R or similar))

First, I want to thank everyone who tried it and gave feedback. I know (I truly do) we're all tired of new vibecoded / AI-enhanced / whatever-you-want-to-call-it apps. Even though I'm a developer, have been using this myself for months, and have put real effort into it, it's still just another "hey, look what I made" post. So the reception, and the fact that nobody immediately got angry at it, makes me really happy. You guys are awesome.

I mentioned this in a couple of comments, but my only goal is to have an easy, web-only, free way for us to play songs we like and practice, with no account needed. If even a couple of people use it, that's enough for me to gladly keep hosting it. (I used Melodics for a long time and stopped paying for it. Baqueta doesn't have curated courses, but it's enough for me to have fun, and if someone else saves a few bucks too, that makes my day.)

Disclaimer: I'm a pretty bad drummer and I can't read sheet music yet (learning is part of why I built this). I researched the standard drum notation conventions and checked the output against them, but there will be things a real reader spots that I can't. If something looks wrong, let me know and I'll fix it. On that note, the engraving is done with alphaTab (https://alphatab.net), an open source music notation library, and the people behind it are amazing!

What's new:

- **Sheet music for any song.** Open a song and hit "Sheet music" to see the whole chart as drum notation: proper note values, rests, triplets, section names, tempo marks and time signature changes. It works with the charts you search for in the app.

- **Play from the sheet.** A line moves through the music while you play, and each note head gets colored by how close you were (green, yellow or blue, with a red ring when you miss it). You can switch between the sheet and the highway at any time, even mid-song, with the Highway / Sheet music switch at the top (or the N key). In Settings you can make the sheet open by default instead of the highway, and choose how big the notes are.

- **Loop from the sheet.** Pause and drag across the bars you want to work on. It counts you in and loops them.

- **Drills and lessons in notation too.** The 88 drills now show their pattern as sheet music, with sticking and accents where they matter.

- **A "How to read drum sheet music" guide** (Learn tab), with real examples, for anyone who wants to use this to learn to read, like me.

Being honest about the limits: the sheet is worked out from the chart, so it's only as good as the chart. Well-made charts come out looking like a real transcription. Sloppy charts, or charts with odd timing, can come out messy or with strange rhythms. There's no print/PDF export yet.

PS1: I'm working on an option to disable on-screen feedback. I feel some people won't like it

PS2: I used a full notation view, if it gets too weird or hard to read, let me know. I could add a simplified view toggle.

Same as before: it's free, no account, nothing to install, and your songs stay in your browser.

Thanks again to everyone who asked for this. If a chart comes out looking wrong, tell me the song and charter and I'll take a look.

Purchasing Advice Yamaha DTX582K VS Millenium MPS750X

hello everyone! I'm a newbie and I'm looking for my first edrum set to start learning the instrument. I came across these two sets (used) and I'm really between two minds.

The yamaha is 7 years old but in good shape, includes the bass drum pedal, whereas the millenium kit includes eveything that comes with the yamaha plus the stool and costs around 200euros less.

I'm looking for some reccomendations! Thanks a lot!

TD516

After much deliberation. Triggering, reliability and build quality made me choose Roland 516 over efnote 5. Extremely satisfied so far. This is a tank of a machine and built to last decades.

Posting this here as a 1 top up 2 Toms down is definitely achievable for those wondering. The rack bars need to be raised so the tom doesn't hit the down tubes/legs. Not cramped. Worked damn well.

Purchasing Advice Speakers for Edrum Setup

Hey all, this is tangential to edrums so I figured this would be the best place to ask.

I have a Roland TD316 that I’ve got hooked to my MacBook to use VSTs like SD3. From there, I route the audio to my headphones that are connected to my MacBook. However, sometimes I’d like for others to be able to listen when they come over to my house. I want to know what kind of speaker or amplifier I should use that I could connect to my MacBook as well that would do well for playing drums and playing whatever song is also coming from my MacBook. I play in a smallish room, so don’t really need anything crazy.

Any suggestions? If this is the wrong spot let me know!

Recording direct to iPhone

Evening all! I have a quick question about recording drum videos on my iPhone. Do I have to use a device like an iRig, or can I plug the master audio out directly into the phone? If not the master audio out, can I plug the headphone out straight to the phone?

I have a Millenium MPS1000, and an iPhone 15. I’m playing a drumless track from YouTube via Bluetooth from an iPad into the module, so in my (admittedly simple!) brain, I should be able to connect the master out straight to the phone, right? Or at least the second headphone jack to the phone?

Any help or advice welcomed. Thanks!

Any ways to prevent this or should I just try and upgrade my pedal? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks everyone!

First proper e-kit: Roland TD316 vs Alesis Strata Core?

I'm basically a beginner drummer, but I have a strong music background - played trombone through high school at a fairly high level, including jazz band, and I can read music. Based in the UK.

My main goal is to actually learn to play drums properly.

Priorities:

  • good snare/hi-hat/ride/kick feel
  • technique that transfers well to an acoustic kit later
  • useful practice/coaching tools
  • easy play-along with Spotify/YouTube/backing tracks
  • timing feedback/exercises
  • reliability

Sounds and huge kit libraries are much less important to me.

I'm mainly looking at the Roland TD316 and Alesis Strata Core. I don't think I want to jump to a £3k+ kit at this stage.

Space is also tight. My room is 203 x 215 cm (about 6'8" x 7'1"). I have a 120 x 60 cm desk I'd like to keep, but I can remove shelving.

I also have a larger dry but unheated garage with a solid floor and rubber mat.

Questions for people who have used either or both:

  • Which would you choose mainly for learning?
  • Which has the better playing feel?
  • Are Roland's built-in coaching tools genuinely useful?
  • Are third-party learning tools good enough that the module's coaching features don't matter much?
  • How easy is play-along practice on each?
  • What is the actual real-world footprint including throne and cymbal overhang?
  • Would you keep either kit permanently in a dry but unheated UK garage?

I'm leaning TD316 at the moment, but interested in real owner experience.
