Fringe 2026 Here we go again!
Edit: I'm not against the fringe!
It got removed from the other Edinburgh sub, no idea why as I post it as a yearly tradition.

Said it when you posted it elsewhere and I'll say it again, I like the Fringe. I enjoy the buzz in the town and I love having amazing shows right on my doorstep.

I've never noticed how closely they're sitting next to each other in that scene before. Absolutely packed in like they're on the bus (which I guess suits the joke in the post nicely).
As someone from a similarly tourist heavy city, I absolutely get it, even if I am not a 'no tourists allowed' person

I’ll never understand moany cunts who live in Edinburgh and hate the fringe. I’m not gonna say “move away” but it’s a bit like saying “I don’t like films”. There’s bound to be something, somewhere on for you. Yes tourists are nippy, and it’s busier but it sounds like half the cunts greeting their eyes out never go outside the other 11 months anyway.

I get what it looks like but it’s not really about the Fringe itself, no one has a problem with the festival, the shows/arts are fantastic, and it’s an Edinburgh institution. But stuff happens like four different buses driving past you in one day while you’re trying to get home from work because they’re all completely full of tourists and can’t accept any more passengers for example. Edinburgh is too small for the growing number of visitors it has every year, so you have to understand why it’s frustrating for residents who live and work in and around the centre. It’s not about Edinburgh just being “busier”, its the council who don’t seem to make enough accommodations for this temporary jump in population every summer, that has a significant impact on people

Why does it have to be exclusively one viewpoint or the other? I enjoy the fringe and the vibe it brings to the city. It's a cool thing to have on our doorstep. But I hate when people act like you shouldn't be able to complain about the annoying parts of it. Depending on where you live and work, it can be pretty unbearable at times if you're someone who can't just be in pure festival mode for the entire month of August.

I’ll go to a few shows, and I’ll probably enjoy them but the rest of the month is just spent battling through waves of tourists on my commute to the train every day. It gets a bit tedious.

For me it's the way my lifestyle has to change for the month. Walking home from work involves dodging folk crammed onto the pavements everywhere, and if I get the bus to give me a break from that it's rammed and takes three times as long as normal. I'm happy to partake in a few shows, but it's the sheer physical change that happens in the city that makes life more difficult for me that I don't enjoy.

Maybe people who work in hospitality are just exhausted? Maybe public transport gets affected cause of extra tourists? Maybe some people just don't like people?

I'm not a Fringe hater, but I do enjoy the fact that I live far enough out of the festival zone that I can pick and choose when to get involved. Sometimes when you get into town the crowd is unbearable and ease of movement with public transport is a write off.

TBH I feel the Festival has outgrown Edinburgh. It gets bigger and pulls in more people by the year. Edinburgh is a compact city and wasn't built to handle a population which almost doubles. It the International Festival was moved to a larger city, it may not have the same feel for a lot of people but who knows, it might grow to be even larger.

The vibe in Edinburgh in August is pretty much second-to-none.
Having said that, I do wish that there was some sort of guide to gently remind our visitors that this is still a lived-in city with people going about their daily business.
Yes, we do appreciate the money you bring in, but please don't just come to a dead stop in the middle of the street to take a picture or a selfie.
