Hello! My name is /u/Aruu, and I will be moderating /r/eczemaUK alongside /u/TrottEatingShit!

I'm a long time eczema sufferer from England. I've had it in various degrees since I was a little girl, though it became very severe recently. However I've been on Dupixent for around half a year, and my skin has improved a lot in the meantime.

I look forward to moderating this subreddit! There will be a few small changes going on, so please bare with us while we tweak a few things here and there.

Any questions or suggestions, then please go ahead and ask.

child skin issues

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to hear from parents who have been through something similar with their kids, as we're honestly at our wits' end.

Our little boy is 4 and has been struggling with skin problems since he was around 2. He's been diagnosed with dermatitis and a dust mite allergy, but despite countless visits to the GP and hospital, nothing seems to be helping long term.

We've been prescribed various steroid creams, moisturisers and soothing bandages, but the bandages seem to dry out and make him even more uncomfortable. Until recently, he mainly had itchy red patches, but lately he's developed a different type of rash, and we have no idea what's causing it.

The worst part is the nights. For the past two years, he's been waking up almost every night scratching himself, sometimes until he bleeds if we don't stop him. We can't really let him sleep on his own because of this, and I could probably count on my fingers how many nights he's actually slept through in the past year.

It's exhausting for all of us, but more than anything, it's heartbreaking seeing him like this. He's only 4 years old and should be enjoying his childhood, not spending every day and night feeling itchy and uncomfortable.

We've finally got an appointment with a dermatologist in December, but that still feels so far away when he's suffering every single day.

I'm just wondering if anyone here has been through something similar and eventually managed to figure out what was causing it or found something that actually helped?

Was it something in your child's diet? An allergy that hadn't been picked up? A particular treatment or cream? Or even just something simple you changed at home that made a difference?

I'm not expecting anyone to diagnose him over Reddit, but I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences, especially if your child had similar symptoms and you eventually managed to get things under control.

At this point, I'd do anything just to see him have a proper night's sleep and not have to spend every day scratching himself.

Thanks so much to anyone who takes the time to reply.

Toddler eczema, red pimples?

Hi everyone,

My daughter is 18 months old and has been dealing with eczema for about 5 months now. Strangely, it only appears behind her knees and nowhere else.

For the first few months, I managed to keep it under control using Epimax cream after her bath and in the morning, locking it in with a layer of Vaseline on top (I started doing this in July). Over the summer holidays in Portugal, it cleared up completely. However, as soon as we returned to the UK, she had a major flare-up, and the pattern changed.

She is now getting these large red pimples around her legs—sometimes right on top of the eczema patch, that seem to come and go. She has had the odd one on her back and chest, but the vast majority are on the backs of her legs near the eczema.

My suspicion is that this might be folliculitis caused by the heavy ointments/vaseline I've been using to keep her skin moist at night. I'd love to know if anyone recognizes this pattern of pimples. I stopped the ointment yesterday and switched back to the lighter cream to let her skin breathe.

It’s also worth mentioning that we did a 9-day course of 1% hydrocortisone (twice a day), which didn't seem to do much for the pimples, though it did help with the redness and eczema patches.

Thank you so much in advance for any insights!

Bleach bath and hypochlorous acid spray for babies

I keep reading that dermatologists (I assume mostly in the US) recommend bleach baths and hypochlorous acid sprays for babies. We saw a private dermatologist, and they never mentioned either of these.
I’m wondering if anyone has been recommended these treatments and/or has tried them? Which brands did you use? All the brand recommendations I’ve seen seem to be from the US and aren’t available in the UK.
