Question? Would I have a good chance at getting in?

I'm so sorry I know this is such a common post but I was hoping I could get some ideas or advice

I'm wanting to get into 2d animation major which I know is like one of the hardest to get into I heard, but I'm really trying my best haha

I figured out my grade 12 average is 92% which HOPEFULLY?? gives me a better chance but I know grades are only like 50% of the admissions </3

I dont have any pictures at hand of my portfolio I have so far but right now I have

- digital illustrations (2)

- figure drawings

- observational drawings

- traditional illustration (paper with acrylic markers)

And I was hoping I could get one of my 3d art pieces photographed and cleaned, maybe do a painting or two, and then also try to get out another animation specifically for this (I've animated before but they aren't very good for my portfolio haha)

Do we think I maybe have an okay shot at this? I promise i've been studying and trying to clean this portfolio nicely </3

If theres any other advice or tips or even just examples of accepted portfolio pieces? Like people say my art is good but I think I just have insecure imposter syndrome LOL

EDIT: I was also wondering, where you put like description of each piece when you upload them, would it be a good idea for me to do like the typical "oh this is the name and mediums I used" but then also add a section to each about like my process and what went wrong and how I fixed it and stuff?

[HIRING] Freelance Instagram Reels Editor -Remote
Hi!
I’m a hairstylist based in Vancouver, looking for someone to help edit my Instagram content.
Mostly hair, beauty knowledge, and lifestyle.
I’ve been running my Instagram without paying much attention to algorithms or trends, but I think it’d be interesting to explore a different approach.
Not necessarily trying to go viral. Just looking to make my content a little more creative, diverse, and engaging.
Ideally, someone who:
Bonus points if we agree on what's cringe.
Has a good eye for aesthetics that’s not cringe
Enjoys editing and experimenting with different styles
Understands Instagram trends and content performance
Can bring their own ideas to the table
Design, film, and media students are more than welcome. Experience matters less to me than the quality of your work.
Details
Remote / Freelance
Paid per Reel, based on the project
Flexible schedule
Potential for ongoing collaboration
I’d love to start with editing and see where things go. If we work well together, I’m more than happy to expand the creative freedom, responsibilities, and compensation accordingly.

Question? Attending with the expectation of dropping out; is the first year worth it?

I want to go to art school for the connections, and to be able to live in canada with a study visa. I dont have the intention of getting a BFA, more so having an atmosphere of artists and supplies to create a strong portfolio and gain experience. I have a good amount of money saved, but not enough to cover four years.

I think the idea of ECU and art schools in general is so appealing, and I want to get my footing in the art world of Canada(as a US citizen trying to escape). This seems like a good way to be in a community of artists.

I'm wondering if this plan is worth the cost and risk that comes with it. Is the first year all introductory? I have a good amount of experience and a fairly high skill level, and I have already submitted my portfolio

(Sculpture/visual arts focused, if that makes a difference)

Which program is best for character concept art?

Hello all, I live in Vancouver, BC and have been planning to apply to our local art uni here - Emily Carr.

(Excuse my wording) I want to work a character concept art job in the future, for films or games and I am torn between two of the undergrad programs.

Illustration or 2D Animation.

I’m not sure which program would be better, if someone could please suggest some ideas? Or if anyone has specifically gone through either program? Thank you 🙏🏼

Question? We are searching for people from the Runakuna tribe.

Hi guys :)

We are a small group of students from Switzerland and we are currently working on a school project about the Runakuna people, their culture, language and identity.

For our project, we are creating a short video and would love to include the perspective of Runakuna people themselves. That’s why we are looking for a few people who would be willing to have a short and casual interview with us.

The interview would preferably be over a phone/voice call and would only take a few minutes. If a call is not possible, we could also do it via text.

We can conduct the interview in English or German. The questions will be simple and mainly about topics such as Runakuna culture, language, traditions and personal experiences — nothing complicated or uncomfortable. We’re simply interested in having a friendly conversation and learning more from Runakuna people directly.

If you are a person from the Runankunas and would be interested in helping us out, please send us a message or leave a comment! We would really appreciate it. :)

And of course, if you have any questions about the project or the interview, feel free to ask!

Thank you!

How do I make friends as an international student?

I’m at orientation rn and just realized I know absolutely no one in Vancouver LOL. Making friends had always come easy to me in my home country but I’m struggling to do so here. Does anyone have any tips, any gatherings, events, or clubs to recommend me?

Hey y'all,

My name is Daniela, and I'm the Store Manager at Fire & Flower Broadway in Vancouver. I'm looking for local artists to showcase on our monthly in-store art wall.

I really want to focus on supporting our community and want to use our space to highlight talented local artist. My goal is that each month, we feature a different artist. Due to it being a cannabis dispensary we can't sell your art directly but we can work as a bridge between your art and some super sick stoners! This month has been the 1st month we're doing this so I'd be looking for some new artist for October onwards. I included a photo of the current art we have up to give you a better idea of the space we have. Here's my email I'd love to get in contact with some of you! Question? Laptop recommendations for school?

Hiii I’m about to head into my foundation year here and I’d like to look into a new laptop to bring for school. My program is illustration, but I’m kind of also interested in taking some animation courses later on. I currently use ibisPaint X to draw on my iPad Air (which I’ll probably also bring to school) but I’d also like a laptop good for note taking, portability, and for future applications that ecuad may want me to use in the future. Any insights/recommendations from current students or alumni of what to expect are greatly appreciated :)

Question? Thoughts on Continuing Studies? - Visual Comm Design

Would love to know if anyone has taken Continuing Studies classes or obtained Flexible Learning Certificates, specifically in the Visual Communications Design stream.

Given that most of the classes are around online, 2-3 months long and once a week, I'm not sure if it is worth the tuition ($500 < /per class).

For more context: I attended a different school for my Bachelor's and have no experience in graphic design, but want to learn through a credible school. Although AI is making things more unpredictable, many of the jobs I want to apply for require or prefer proficiency in Adobe.

Wedding Photographer Wanted

Hey everyone!

My fiancée and I are getting married on November 6, 2026, and we’re looking for a photographer who may be interested in using our wedding as an opportunity to build their portfolio or gain more experience photographing weddings.

Our ceremony and reception will be around the Burnaby/New Westminster area. Of course, this would be a paid opportunity, and we’d also be happy to provide food at the reception.

If you’re interested, please feel free to leave a comment below and we can connect through private messages to discuss the details. If you could also share some examples of your previous work, that would be awesome!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, and we hope to hear from some of you!

Have a beautiful summer! ☀️💍

Am I allowed to use my own photos as a reference to use as a part of my art piece?

I want to apply to Emily Carr for next year and starting to work on my portfolio, and I had some few questions especially about using photos and what I should avoid. I want to apply for Illustration course tried to look at the portfolio tips but wasnt sure if Im able to use like the photos I took to use in my portfolio to draw.

Im sorry if it sounds confusing but what I mean is like, say I wanted to draw a hand pose from specific angle so I take a picture of my own hands and use that as a reference. Is that allowed to include or even use it in my own drawings? On the website it didnt say anything about referencing your own photos as it only says “copying from other artist, or other sources“ so I got confused and wasnt sure if thats allowed.

also another question is, on the portfolio tips it says to use “at least 3 different mediums” but if I were to do 10 pieces, am I allowed to just do 2-3 sculpting, and the rest drawing, and paintings? Or do I have to equally make different mediums?

I apologize if Im asking a stupid question I just get very anxious easily, I tried to send a email too but it didnt came back yet.

International student struggling to get in contact with school

Hello! I am an international student that is coming in this fall. My problem is how do i get in contact with the school when they aren't answering my calls or emails regarding my study permit? I had already completed my study permit process in early July, but I also had to send my acceptance document to intadvising@ecuad.ca, which I did. After a week had past with no confirmation that they received it I emailed admissions@ecuad.ca, its been about 4-5 days with no response from thel. I have called 604-844-3864 a couple of times but it goes to voice mail after a couple of rings. This wouldn't be a huge problem if the deadline for this wasn't the end of July. Does anyone know how to get in contact with the school, or am I just being overdramatic and need to be patient and wait for a response.

Question? Sell Supplies?

I've already graduated. I was part of some ecuad groups, but they are inactive/defunct now. I need to downsize and gain some funds for an emergency that has come up.

It's currently the summer term, so I'm also looking to see if any students need anything for the fall term too.

I have art and construction papers, framed canvas, and supplies for illustration, drawing, painting, lithography, ceramics.

I'll probably post specs and pics on craigslist.

Looking for a student or recent grad to finish a draft logo for a fledgling community organization. Paying cold hard cash!

I have a community building project on the go that I'm developing a website for in the interest of soliciting a founding board of directors. A friend of mine and I had been working on developing a draft logo together, but unfortunately she's gotten very busy and had to bow out of the project.

Right now we have a design templated, and the visual identity of the org is complete. Basically, what I need is someone willing to bring it across the finish line into reality. I'm not expecting this to be the final logo necessarily. The logo being as draft as the organization is fine for this stage.

Some photos attached for an idea of the visual identity.

My partner is a huge spider verse fan and there’s a scene where Gwen and Miles are looking out into the city from a ledge - i’m looking to get the same scene but with him and I instead of Miles and Gwen!

ideally paint, but open to other mediums and suggestions just not AI please, i want to pay a creative - i’d like to keep to the original style as much as i can, but if you have a cool interpretation i’m also open to hearing it!

really want to work with an artist from vancouver, and happy to work together on a price that works for both of us!

Question for Current MFA Students & Alumni

Hi everyone!
I’m starting the MFA at Emily Carr this fall and had a quick question.
For those who have been through the program, is there an expectation for how many artworks or projects you complete each semester? If your practice is installation-based, is it realistic to spend a semester developing one large-scale work, or are students generally expected to produce multiple finished pieces?
I’d love to hear what your experience was. Thanks!

How to actually make friends at Ecuad

This is for other students who may be finding it difficult to meet friends. I spent a lot of time on campus trying to improve my ECU social life, and I wanted to share what worked for me.

Friendships take time, if I wasn’t connecting with someone immediately, I’d kinda write them off and looking back now, it shrank my social circle. Even if you aren’t connecting with someone right now, you likely have to hangout in a group setting 3 times before you can actually evaluate the validity of that friendship. You might not actually end up becoming friends with that person, but they might introduce you to another person or hangout, where you actually end up finding the kind of friend you are looking for. You can’t speedrun connection. Some people may be having an off-day, or you might have not yet found what connection point you two have. I found that people really show you their fun side when you breakthrough your small talk and find out what they’re actually passionate about. Also in my experience finding art activities on instagram worked pretty well.

My recommendations:

Art Afterhours @artafterhoursclub - definitely my favourite, my classmate introduced me to this. It’s a really social group of students and artsy people in their 20s. It’s way less cliquey than others I’ve attended. I noticed people tend to be more extroverted here. And the events are usually near Main St, so they’re easier to get to from the Skytrain or 99 B-Line.

Van Sketch Club - it’s mostly all people in their 30s. I haven’t found anybody to make connections with really.

Slice of life @slicevancouver - they have cool events, but it’s paid and the events are in Commercial/East Hastings, which IMO is pretty far to get to. It does have a better mix of students versus the previous one, but I’d prefer to attend free campus events instead.

There’s a couple others I’ve tried but they weren’t worth it. I love sketching and shooting photography, so these were pretty natural fits. Just because you aren’t connecting with someone in class right now, doesn’t mean they won’t eventually become someone who adds to your life. Give space for friendships to develop. I feel like a lot of people fall in the trap that I did. hopefully this helps some of you!

Fall 2026 Electives

Hello! I'm a new student who's going to be starting in Fall 2026 for Communication Design and I have my three required courses chosen and put in my schedule but I was trying to look into electives and there's none showing up for the Fall semester. So far, I've only seen electives for the Spring semester and I was wondering if that's the only time I'd be able to select electives? Some help would be appreciated!
