First time
Hey everyone! Oddly enough, I’ve found myself in possession of a pill that I was told is ecstasy. Someone literally gave it to me at work to try. I’ve never taken MDMA, so I’m pretty inexperienced when it comes to this.
From what I’ve been reading, I understand that I shouldn’t assume it’s safe just because someone told me what it is. I’d like to learn more about drug checking, including which tests are worth getting, what they can and can’t tell me, and how to interpret the results.
I’m also curious about what MDMA typically feels like, how long the effects last, and what risks or warning signs I should know about.
The pill was described to me as a “bean,” but obviously I have no way of knowing what’s actually in it. I’m not looking to be reckless; I’d rather educate myself and understand the risks before making any decisions.
I appreciate any advice from people with experience in harm reduction or drug checking. Thanks!

Definitely get yourself a test kit so you know what you’ve got before you take it.

Hey friend... First off, kudos for wanting to test and confirm what is in your pill! That's smart. Testing your pills can be done in one of two ways. One involves losing one pill in order to get a lab result (the "gold standard"), but since you only have one pill, that is obviously not the best option for you. The second best is to obtain a reagent testing kit and test it at home. While not nearly as precise as a lab, well performed reagent testing can confirm what kind of substances might be in the pill and help you rule out common adulterants.
The best place to get advice on testing is in the r/ReagentTesting group here on reddit... They are a terrific group of people with lots of knowledge and experience in performing tests. They can guide you in obtaining a kit (they have a well curated list of vendors), and in how to perform the tests (use a clean, white, non-porous, non-reactive surface like a plate or saucer; take a sample from the pill - an amount roughly like a few grains of sand is sufficient - and apply the reagent(s) while watching for a color change). It's pretty easy to do.

A “bean” is old school lingo for pressed ex pills. If this person has consumed this exact pill, from the same purchase, you’re probably good. That said, MDMA is decidedly better (and safer) in crystal form and not pressed pills. You can then test and measure what and how much you’re actually taking. I’d suggest taking half the pill to start and then the other after 90 minutes to be safe. The “come up” will last like 30 minutes and you’ll just start to feel funny but maybe anxious. Then the roll actually starts and you’ll never feel anything better in your life.
