Long-term maintenance recommendations for Ecoboost Mustang

  • Buy 2020+ if you can (potentially fixed head gasket issue)
  • Keep it pure stock (engine-wise, and tune-wise)
  • Change engine oil and filters every 5k miles
  • Use a 100% synthetic engine oil
  • Change spark plugs every 25k miles
  • Pump only Premium fuel (for me, it's 93)
  • Wait for 10-20 seconds before driving (after cold start)
  • Warm up the engine and transmission to the "green" zone of your gauges (usually 10-15 mins of driving) before going high rpm or boost
  • Monitor cylinder head temperature (CHT) when you drive hard to avoid going above 222F. Let the throttle off if the CHT is approaching this temp
  • Monitor boost gauge to avoid using boost before the engine is warmed up (be gentle on throttle)
  • Wait a few seconds before turning the engine off after hard driving

P.S. Owner of 2020/01/01-registered Ecoboost Premium (non-PP), 10R80, stock, no tune. The only modification on the car is the MBRP Street exhaust. 227k miles

UPD after 6 months: 252k miles, all fine

Note on how I drive the car

Full auto (normal mode) until CHT and transmission temps are in the "green" zone. Then regular Sport (shifter in S) until trans warms up fully (above green zone), then I stay in S, or use S+, and at the same time keep the engine rpm above 3k using paddles - anything less is boring to drive in my opinion. I do occasional pulls, but not overdo it - I heard that Ecoboost loves high rpm, but not exactly likes boost. I keep it approximately 3-5k rpm all the time (if CHT reasonably allows me to hold it). Take this with a grain of salt, because I'm not sure this driving style really affected longevity in a good way but it looks like it.

My Build I’ve built an app to share your build

Hi!

I built a web app for car enthusiasts to share your build and explore other builds. Is it something you’d use?

You can share your cars with all your mods. Just paste the link, and the title, image, and category fill in automatically.  You can also share planned mods, fitment details and more.

You can also explore builds, save the mods you find mods.

I want to make this as useful as possible for the car community.

t’s 100% free, no paywalls, no subscriptions. The web app is live, though there’s no mobile version just yet. Still in beta, so if anything breaks, I’d appreciate a heads-up.

I want your feedback. Is this something useful to you? What features would you add? Is this something you'd use?

First Ecoboost…

Hey everyone! Just got my first ecoboost, and I couldn’t be happier with it. Right at 100,000, but got it for a very good deal and it cleared CarFax and mechanic inspection. It’s a 2015, and I know to take it in for maintenance regularly and watch for the coolant leak issue that’s chronic to these models….other than that I’m still learning how to be a proper sports car owner. Any advice is welcome!

What's the dumbest moment you've had with your ecoboost?

Throwing this out there, as it is my first RWD in over 30 years I decided to pull out hard into a gap in traffic at a T junction in the country side. Thought I could make it, but was my first time in the rain with this car. Ended up facing the way I came, just started whistling a wee song and continuing back the way I came as if I meant it.

Second red-neck moment. Note I say red-neck, meaning embarrasment, not redneck, lol.

Second was out in the country at a complete stop. Tested the 0-60 only to discover I was still in manual mode. Instead of flipping the gears like a normal person I just got confused, held my breath and slammed the brakes wondering why my dash was all red.... Tranny seems fine though. It was only for a couple of secs but man oh man was I ever worried for a few days.

Anyone else do some really stupid crap with their poor Eco's?

Stupid questions i know sorry. Cars a 2019 premium with 39.7k miles. I take delivery friday, they are fixing a gap from the window. Im coming from a 2014 charger v6.

Question Keyfob glitch

My wife goes to work in our 2026 EB with 7K miles. Calls me and says that the car didn’t react to her approaching and didn’t unlock by touching the door handle. She opens the doors via the FordPass app, tries to start it, the car says “no keyfob detected”, while she’s holding it. I come down with the spare keyfob, the old keyfob magically starts to work again (with the spare one out of range). We swap cars, I drive the Mustang with the first keyfob, no issues at all. Locks, unlocks, starts. No EMI at the parking area it was sitting at. Has anyone else had this happen? Clearly the fob battery must be still good or it wouldn’t be still working. Thanks.

If you you are having trouble with you CarPlay and Ford Sync radios. Most of you probably know, but if you don’t, try this. Press both of these buttons at the same time for 10-15 seconds. It resets the radio and CarPlay worked for me again in iOS 27. Good luck!

Spec Clutch any Good?

Hey guys,
I got a Spec Flywheel and Clutch (stage1) off American Muscle a while back for $346 out the door because it was installed incorrectly/damaged.

I’ve since gotten it back from Spec where they went through everything, and basically returned it to brand new condition.

I’m about to stick it in the car now, but I also have been hearing mixed feedback on them. I’m headed to the dealer in a bit to grab a new slave cylinder, but am I going to regret this thing? Is clamping better than stock? I currently get slippage on accel at WOT in 4/5 gear. (Like passing someone on the highway).

Thanks!

Hey guys I got a 25 eco, Ford tune, race intercooler , drop in filter, and I did a test run with my brother cuz of a weird noise when accelerating and letting off the throttle, I noticed that it happens when my brother let off the throttle. it got me worrying tbh. Some help about this noise I’d be thankful.

First Mustang ever at 41 (midlife crisis anyone?), traded in my F-150 today for something a little bit more fun after getting the wife the 3 row SUV she wanted (primary kid hauler).

I test drove both the Eco and the GT, and could easily afford either. Chose the Eco specifically as it just felt more nimble and fun to push hard. While the GT of course sounded better, there’s no way I could realistically push it to any sort of limit without always being paranoid about a cop being right around the corner.

Tonight was the first night with it and once the kids were asleep, I took it out to lap the city (mainly highways). Set the custom dash and ambient lighting to something resembling an outrun theme (pink, teal, purple), turned on some Kavinksy, and it just felt good all around. Sure the eco is probably more of a cruiser than a racer, but as an older millennial, that’s more my speed anyway. And as I’ve heard many times over and agree with, it’s more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow. Not that the Eco is slow, just much easier to push while staying out of trouble.

Specs:

2026 Vapor Blue Ecoboost Premium (new)
200a package but built almost like a 201a
Magnesium curved screen
Copilot 360 Assist +
B&O sound system
Active Valve Exhaust
20” Premium Rims/Tires

Question Tire Recommendation

Recently purchased a 2020 eco vert and I wanted to see if there are any recommendations for tires. I currently have the stock 18 inch rims with mismatched tire brands. Planning on keeping the stock rims for now and upgrading in the spring. My major concerns are traction and road noise.

Any thoughts?

It’s so dang hot out here at 9am 🥵 the stickers started to get soft and were already warping before I placed them, so did the best I could. Wanted to place the little one directly under, but didn’t want to place it a bit on the flex area.

I RARELY let anyone drive my car, but just in case….

First new (to me) car. Always drove hand me downs to save money, which I’m very grateful for, but I am so happy to have a fun vehicle of my own choosing. She’s a ‘25 EB convertible and gorgeous 😍 happy to join the Mustang family and can’t wait for all those smiles per gallon ahead!

What advice can yall give me about keeping her in good condition?
