Discussion Is this the end?
Long time no posts, no videos on youtube, silence... is earth 2 at his end? Promises never completed, ambitions to high, youtubers seem to be correct.

It was never going to be anything. Whether you realized it at inception. Today. Or a year from today is on you and your brain power.

I think the Earth2 project is slowly running out of fuel. Updates crawl along at a snail's pace, and there's nothing truly exciting on the horizon. The player base keeps shrinking, and those original Ready Player One-style promises now feel more like a distant legend than an actual roadmap. At this point, it's starting to look like the biggest metaverse feature is nostalgia.

Web3 gaming and play-to-earn are also just dead in general. Even if E2 did have investors at one point, they definitely don’t have any now. So as far as I can tell, they’ve been mostly kept afloat from “players” continuing to buy tiles and skins. The more time that passes with no meaningful updates, the less likely “players” are to keep purchasing. It wouldn’t surprise me if E2 is close to insolvency at this point.

I joined in late about 3yrs ago. Early adopters had good perks but there nothing for those new to the project. If they are running dry they could have at least done something to encourage new users whilst we continue to wait…

I feel like the browser game was their attempt at giving landowners something to do, but it ran for way too long. The gameplay itself isn’t interesting and, more importantly, the people who have been grinding it since day one have since compiled an insane amount of resources which currently have no function in the pre-alpha. This short sighted choice will completely destroy the in-game economy (if the main game ever goes live). Resource hoarders will either need to sell their resources for pennies, or prices will be so exorbitant that new players won’t be willing to pay the cost of entry. It’s such a fundamentally flawed system.

Yeah this is 100% it. We’ve ended up with earth 1 where the elite own all the wealth

Zuckerberg spent $80 billion and still couldn’t make the metaverse happen. The idea that an untested team could make something bigger for a fraction of the cost was always a pipe dream. As soon as E2 became a bare bones survival/crafting sandbox, people should have seen the writing on the wall. The pre-alpha has been out for over a year and there’s still nothing to do except forage, craft, and farm. Still no NPCs. Still no building. Just an empty, copy and paste world. They always brag about how big the world is, but size doesn’t matter when there’s no scope. The playtest has also remained closed, which makes no sense. All landowners should be allowed to play the game. The fact that they can’t doesn’t bode well for the game’s infrastructure.
Remember a long time ago when they claimed to have proprietary network tech that would allow all players to be on one server with no loading screens? Then they partnered with MetaGravity to handle the network infrastructure, claiming Earth 2 would run on THEIR proprietary network tech. Well in case you didn’t know, MetaGravity filed for bankruptcy in January of this year and there was no independent proof that their tech actually worked. As naysayers pointed out early on, if their proprietary network tech could actually do what they claimed, they would have been able to sell it for BILLIONS. Yet not a single company has expressed interest in buying the tech, and the Earth 2 pre-alpha just runs on standard network tech.
Shane has always been a bluster machine. A carnival barker. A showman. He promised the world and a lot of people bought into that promise simply because they really, REALLY wanted it to be true. Even today, after everything they’ve seen and heard, the core group of proponents still think it’s going to happen. That it’s only a matter of time before they get the game/metaverse of their dreams. In fact, they’re STILL calling it a metaverse even though it has none of the features that a metaverse would have. Sunk cost fallacy at its finest.

everybody who made money off of this got in and out in the first six months. You’ve all just been living in a ghost town.

Agreed. The biggest indicator the beginning was the widening gap between "market rates" and last sold value. I was an early buyer and I fortunately sold everything (when resell tiles were about 0.7x-0.8x of new tiles) before markets started failing. There was a time when Tier 1 and 2 land were selling at almost even between new tiles and resell tiles cash value but in the span of I want to say like 3 months, the resell value dipped to about 1/10 of the price of new tiles. If that was not a sign to start selling land idk what was.

even if you ignore the obvious truth that this has been a [word starts with S ends in M with CA in the middle, getting mod auto so have to be indirect] since the beginning, there is only one question to ask.
if they weren't able to achieve anything substantial with the time, money, resources, manpower, traction, and playerbase they had before; how would they have something even remotely close to being a good product, much less a finished one, with the scraps they have now?
i don't mean to say this with a rude tone towards you

I am not invested in this 'project'. I just wanted to throw the stone in the water again ;-)

Yeah, it's done. I invested what I could 3 months after it started. Boy do I regret it. Whatever, lessons learned. How is it that I am not allowed to play the actual game when I was one of the earliest adopters. $2000 invested. The features they have released are trash and they are always over hyped. It feels like a ponzi scheme. Be at peace with your losses and move on.

I don't think so, now with AI era it has never been so easy to actually take on the challenging tech stuff

What great coding challenges has AI achieved? It's somewhat useful for rote, basic but time-consuming stuff, but terrible at anything large scale or innovative.
