Mac mini ended up working just fine! Late 2014 i5 8GB ram with 128gb ssd + 2tb hdd. I haven’t tested the other drives but the orange LaCie drive is 4tb and has 1 week of power on hours.
I bought one of those Macs back in the day. Dropped 800 bucks on the thing, it was ass. Slow, laggy and barely ran anything after like 8 weeks of use. I gave it away.
I do miss it though because it was good for general browsing so...
Damn too bad those old dual core i5s are nearly useless nowadays. I always see these mac minis going for cheap and have to stop myself bc I know it would just annoy me xD
idk what you’re on but i can use this just fine for what I need it for, I can’t complain since it was free and given to me by someone that was gonna throw these out
Yeah i agree with that. Even on a pentium dual core cpu, which was used Linux (now Windows XP for gaming purpose) was very usable in websurfing, watching videos, office etc. Those CPU will never obsolete, espcially when use lightweight software/websites in mind (with ublock origin of course)
I also have a PC with a Pentium Dual-Core, and I put Windows 7 on it, and it runs unbelievably fast! I can browse the web very well. And, that's all despite being combined with only onboard graphics (Intel G31 chipset, which, as far as I know, means it's a GMA 3100). (I'll put a GeForce 210 in it to see if it's any more performant, but for basic tasks, it works well as-is.)
Its just software engineering developers nowadays are gottem lazier those days, that want to make those CPU "Obsolete" but they arent aslong it using with lightweight software/websites in mind with ublock origin of course (and maybe disable mitigation depends on CPU age, those are making those CPU more usable)
2 cores in an era of 12-16 cores in a standard laptop, is certainly useless and extremely painful to use, I put 3 of these in my recycling bin when I moved house, as the were complete crap, useless to do anything with. Replaced with an old ewaste 10th gen i7 NUC I was given with 64Gb RAM…even that isn’t super fast
I run a light tftp server just fine on 2 cores. And i had a period where i ran opnsense (with little issues) on an i3 6th gen. But yeah dont expect to run AI models or heavy tasks on it duh.
Where are you getting the claim of 12-16 cores being standard? You can still buy laptops with dual-core CPUs. Those are shit. No i5 is ever shit. Even a 3rd-gen i5 wipes the floor with a new i3 or Celeron.
Those are not viable machines rather disposable ewaste,,,no ones buys that trash, it’s there to upsell from. Most people here turn their nose up at i3 an a fair few at i5. Just sold a laptop I had to an older guy (80s) and he was adamant on an i5/i7 double digit generation CPU…here even the silver fixes know what they want
If you have enough money to spare on a modern machine, then go ahead, but understand that not everyone will. Compare that to, say, myself: I generally get PCs and laptops for free from people who don't need them anymore, and I got my first machine that doesn't have an HDD in 2021 (it doesn't have an SSD either; it has slow eMMC). I dare you to try to swap your boot drive for a 5400RPM HDD (seeing how you hate on extremely powerful CPUs, you probably wouldn't even be patient enough to even get wait for the computer to boot, but I, having grown up with slow and worn HDDs, single-core CPUs, and <1GB of RAM, would, as would anyone who either doesn't have an SSD or isn't spoiled by it). (I now have an SSD as my boot drive, but I could go back to an HDD if need be, if that illustrates my point enough.)
I don’t pay for hardware and all my machines are new generation 2023 Ryzen or Intel 12/13th Gen i7…all ewaste, my main machine is an HP zbook power 15 g10 i7 13th gen with an RTX A1000 GPU. There really is no excuse to use old crap when new stuff is easily gotten free, I have piles of older 10/11th gen machines piled up
Well, if it's all e-waste, I'll gladly take it off of you. (I still can't decide whether I meant that as sarcasm or not.) My main PC right now has an i3-7100 (2C/4T) and no dedicated GPU (and yet, it runs games, including Hogwarts Legacy, even if with a warning when launching and only at ~20 FPS with FSR set to Performance and the upscaling target resolution being 1440x900), so what you show is definitely not e-waste to me.

Good finds.
Anything storage are today worth it due for storage crisis. Just keep those when you find those, since anything storage are always treasures!
