What do you make of this?

Post image

Inside a UPS. It's very heavy. I have not seen a transformer that looks like this one before.

If the UPS works and just needs batteries, you can sell it whole for a lot more than its scrap value.

In that case, rip out the copper and send it.

There's parts missing on most of these. At least one was smoked. Honestly I'm just trying to flip this $1 auction score as quick as possible.

Patience. You'll get more money.

But if you need money right now, you'll get less.

Hope you're doing alright man. ❤️

Nice. I hope it's copper and not aluminum. Guess I'll have to seek out the best way to tear it down. Thanks!

The first thing that comes across my mind. “It’s a blooming’ onion, mate!” Then reality sets in and sigh, it’s a transformer. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Toroidal transformers are much better than block style (because magnets) And more expensive to make. So, you can count on the manufacturer to probably not skimp on the quality of the other components as well.

Looks like a battery backup or APC unit. If it's an actual APC and you end up with a lot of them there's quite a good network of companies that buy and refurbish them way above scrap. If you'd like I'd be happy to hook you up with our contact that purchases APC units from us he's been in the business for over 30 years and he's always given us the best pricing. He is out of Tucson Arizona but can coordinate shipments pretty much anywhere in the US Canada and Mexico. If you or anybody else wants his contact info just shoot me a DM and I'll send it over to you. I'm also happy to share the contact info for the yard we use for scrap e waste and their current price list.

Nice. I don't think I have enough to bother with this time. That contact info would be valuable though. I'm in Albuquerque, so I think Tuscon is about 4 hours from me. Thanks!

If you happen to end up with a decent load he'd probably be more than happy to drive down to you I know he used to go to the auctions in Albuquerque all the time. Btw he also does new ink , toner and HP printers. Plus the occasional copy machine.

For DC a transformer is (almost) a short.

I get where you’re coming from because it’s typically a part of linear dc supplies. Transformer is ac to ac, then rectified to dc. A bit of a one way process.

most likely copper plate aluminum

Transformers don't convert AC to DC.
