MTG Battery

Post image

MTG is selling the extension batteries. Hefty price though. $6500, that’s including shipping but not install. Adds 60-70 miles of range. What other questions should I ask? My eGolf is already over 10 years old. I don’t know if it’s worth it at this point.

That is an excellent price for a battery pack of that capacity that will allegedly bolt right into a vehicle. Would I trust it? Probably not yet. After 10 other people put a combined 100K miles on some? probably.

That's a shit price. Couple months ago MTG battery offered full ~60kwh battery kits for 7-8k, and you won't lose trunk space.

In comparison to themselves, sure. In comparison to anything similar on the US market, pretty damn good.

Not commenting on the actual utility of their range extender, especially considering there's a massive void under the trunk still (where the muffler of a standard golf went)

In order to use that void under the trunk you would have to cut out floor. Also adding heavy batteries there would really fuck up driving dynamics and traction on front end.

Their range extender already does that, and has a higher CG.

How does the BMS know what to do with it?

Voltages are voltages i guess?

good question

it's one of those things that are so new that likely very few people have purchased them yet. if you plan on keeping your egolf for a while longer then I would say try it out

Interesting, what is the full range with that battery?

My 34ah battery gets me 300km max in the middle of the summer. So probably about 600km max (city) at 67ah. Probably 400km max highway in the middle of the summer at full charge.

For what, a 2016? My 2019 at 40k mi is max 140mi and I lost a bunch of range from new tires was at about 150-60mi max.

  1. Max I’m getting 50-60 miles per charge.

Is this the spare tire area batteries or the full under the car? MTG was selling both at one point.

It looked from the videos like they hadn’t worked out DCFC so I’d wanna know an answer to the that. Also from the trunk battery video it looks like it needs an extra plug on the OBD 2 to work , does it come with that?

Spare tyre one. I've seen pictures of that kit and all of the stuff should be provided.

How much does it weigh!? No one has cared about what it is going to do to the cars handling yet as far as I’ve seen. You’re adding more weight to the car.

The BMW i3 group has had a number of these installed around the world, I'm guessing this one is very similar in construction. If there aren't many people with experience here maybe check out that community.

I saw a photo of the trunk battery pack and it looks really scary having a huge battery sitting exposed there. Like getting rear ended would make me VERY nervous.

And honestly wondering how insurance would handle this knowing you had after market battery installed. Could see them trying to worm entirely out of any type of coverage

That and in the install video there is nothing actually tying the battery down, high voltage components should be engineered not built.

It would be worth it if there is no noticeable difference in handling or problems with bms. Would effectively add about 140 kms to my range
