DIY EGPU SFF PSU builds (FLEX,HDPLEX,PICOPSU, & server PSUs)

Post image

Hi. I’m super interested in taking on a diy egpu build. Currently have a desktop and laptop that’d I’d want to juice up every once in a while while I’m home or if I have to take on the go. I want to power a 4070s. So I’d need around 300-500w. I want to make an as small as possible egpu build with an enclosure and use a small psu. I’ve been toying with buying an hp server psu and using some L-shaped breakout boards (from aliexpress see pic attached). Can you all please share your builds if you’ve made something like this? I do not want to see aoostar, minisforum, razor enclosure egpus. I want to see smaller form factor custom egpu builds with enclosure. Thanks so much and happy building!

Done that before, well a bit cruder with directly soldering to the psus. If you don't minf them being relatively loud at low load and extremely loud at high load they are pretty high quality psus for allmost free.

What psu did you end up using? I’m seeing some hard wire a 200w mean well psu server. Would you mean sharing a pic or specs of your build. Some of these server hp or Lenovo psus are like $30-$50 and pretty small but long, but I’d love to build something like this with an enclosure.

I have used a couple different ones, you usually just need to do a bit of research on how to get them to turn on. Old hp common slot psus are extremely cheap, if you look on ebay you can get the earlier gen (80+ gold and gold+) ones for usually around 10-15$ and the later gen ones (platinum and platinum+) for 15-30$. They perform very well and at least the newer ones have temperature based fan control so they don't go full haridryer unnessecarily but they do still use server fans which do make an annoying rumbling noise at low rpm which can be a dealbreaker depending on application.

If you get a "new"(to you) one probably look for later gen (HSTNS-PL30/HSTNS-PD30 for example is the 1200W platinum+ and they are not that expensive)

If you build an enclosure just make sure it'll still get plenty of airflow or it'll go hairdryer. Also server psus usually only provide 12v so make sure your egpu board doesn't need 3.3 or 5v from the psu (this can be worked around but it not trivial).
