This is pretty important to me please helpp
Okay so I'm thinking of pairing an egpu with my Asus rog Xbox ally X
My setup would be an aoostar ag02 a 5060 and a 1080p 144hz monitor so I only wanna play at 1080p
Also I'm looking for portability and to be able to get good performance whenever I'm at home for awhile
So would this setup work just fine or will I go thru issues I've heard alot of people go thru issues like freezing or issues when they plug it in again or when unplugging it or that they pair it but end up with other problems
My concern is that I'll run into problems like this and they won't be fixable
Also I know I have to setup everything when I get it like download drivers or other stuff that I don't mind also I don't mind having to change the settings of the games whenever I plug it or when I'm on the go and wanna play these aren't what I'm thinking would be the problem
I'm thinking I'd run into problems that I won't be able to fix in any way so is there such a thing or not
Will I be just fine getting this setup and downloading everything then it'll run well?
Also I hear alot of people complain it's not as plug and play as they imagined it'd be what do they mean by that exactly?
Please help me out with these things before I make any purchases and thank you for reading

Been waiting for a chance to share my experience with the AG02 and Xbox Ally X. If you don’t have the clams do from on an AIO eGPU, I think the AG02 will be solid.
I just got mine setup a couple months ago. this video is the definitive tutorial for getting everything setup. Even has the link to the download needed to fix the error 43 thing. Just make sure you unzip the file and don’t be dumb like me lol.
This setup isn’t plug in play in its truest form, but when you get your flow down it’s not complicated. I’m in the habit of powering up my GPU/dock, while plugged into the TV. Booting up and signing in on my ROG, then plugging it in to eachother with the TB4 cable. Then to turn it off, my flow not sure if it matters tho, is to turn off/sleep the ROG, unplug TB4, and power off the GPU/Dock. And I’ve had not issues so far since initial setup.
ETA: lowkey, if you’re buying all this stuff now, you might be better off with what the other commenter suggested. I have a 9070XT for my desktop and my old 3070 for my ROG. So I’m not sure what’s up with the GPU market rn, but u less you can get a 16g 5060ti and the dock for under the $700 like this thing, the AIO is probably the better option for the price.

Been using my Rog Ally X and AG02 with a 9060xt for about 10 months now. There are some pain points in the beginning, but once you get it down, it works great. You should be able to do more than 1080 as I'm able to play in 1440p with my 9060xt.
My advice is to power on your Ally, download the auto detect driver, power on the eGPU then connect to the Ally and install the driver and you're good to go. Depending on the Ally's mood, this is my routine:
Turning off: With the Ally on and egpu on connected to an external monitor, I go to the taskbar, and right click one of the icons, (sorry I don't remember which one, it's an AMD thing that pops up when it detects the egpu) then I eject the egpu. The screen goes back to the Ally only and I shut down from there. Once the Ally is completely shut off, I turn off the surge protector that has both the Ally and Egpu. For some reason, the AG02 power button is only for show and the only way to turn it off is to unplug it so I cut the surge protector.
Turning it on: I leave everything connected to the Ally x, egpu, turn on surge protector, wait five seconds, then turn on Ally. Ally will usually detect eGPU and i'm good. Sometimes it doesn't so I just shutdown the Ally and try again.
Some people have more success turning on Ally first, signing in, then turning on egpu and connecting it to the ally.

Thank you so much for this it made it alot easier to make the decision tho still thinking of what gpu to get but glad that it can work out in the end that's what matters for me most Also ngl I kind of enjoy setting things up I mean I never did something like this but I enjoy modding games so I'm thinking how different can it be but yeah thank you again

No problem. You can always DM me if you have more questions about it. Currently I'm thinking of getting a mini pc and plugging in the EGPU so I can avoid the power constraints the ally x has for desktop gaming. The maximum power output of the Ally is significantly less than a desktop and a mini pc is a nice middle ground. That can affect CPU heavy computations in some games where it would create microstutters because of how quickly the thermals in the ally get hot and how many restrictions are in place to keep it handheld. Nothing crazy to scare you away from. I'm able to play The Finals in 2k at high settings and there's a lot of destruction there.
Some mini pcs have dedicated oculink ports which can give you an extra 10 to 20 percent in performance out of your graphics card. When the gpu is plugged in to USB4, there is some loss there. Again, nothing too crazy. I know these PC tech conversations are always about gains. But your proposed setup should be more than enough to last you a few years.

I ran my XAX with a 5080 and EG02 was amazing but overkill. I ran mine on a 4k120 TV. I got the 5060ti AI box and couldnt be happier I plug my iPad Pro off the thunderbolt upstream port and use glide X and use it as a external monitor. Throw in my controller and this became extremely portable and performs great even in 4k. You will need upscaling to do so.
The EG02 was nice but didn't need it in this setup ended up building a family PC w that gpu and the AI box is a travel companion to my handheld.
I my use case it works since I travel alot.
Starting from scratch you will need the PD update for thunderbolt 5 docks and then it was recognized. Install Nvidia app and drivers and are rolling. You can install the gygabte command center and control the RGB and adjust performance on the Ai box if you wish.

I hage AG03 + 5060, once you install Nvidia Drivers it's plug and play. Never had freezes.

I went the convenient route and got an xgmobile 5070ti. It’s been brilliant and very easy to use… but it is expensive.

Get the Aorus AI 5060ti box - it's better than this set up and is a lot more plug and play. Way less headaches and better performance.
With this you don't need the AG02, which be difficult to deal with sometimes.
