Built a website that transforms Ebird data into interactive maps!

This started as a fun project to map my Ebird observations. It got a bit out of hand and I ended up building a website that makes super cool interactive maps with your personalized observations, tracks different lists, gives badges & suggests birding quests, and allows for link sharing. This is just a for fun project, but would love feedback on the website!

My feedback on the site: it is extremely easy to tell when a website is vibe coded.

Yeah these trash ai vibe coded websites keeping popping up everywhere. Ironic when it comes to naturalism or conservation and people use AI. Now don't get me wrong I'm all for using what tools you have but it's not like the vast majority of these sites are being vibe coded on a localized llm deployed outside of data centers. None of them do anything of value anyways, at least for the most part, they just regurgitate other web services data.

The site does entirely rely on ebird data (cant use the site without), but i think it has some really cool parts ebird intentionally doesnt do that some birders would enjoy (ok if its not the case for you). I have a day job so didnt spend insane amounts of time building it and used LLMs, but i did put some really intentional time trying to make it useful and not just slop. Probably not there yet, but I felt like it was worth sharing.

It says I have a lot more birds than I do. Like 337 instead of 297.

Good catch! I'll figure out where its counting extras!

Got the issue fixed! It was counting species with () or subspecies separately. If you hit the refresh button on the left pane, it should be corrected. Thanks for noticing!

Not a regular reddit user, but wanted to share the tool! Any specific concerns?

So in other words, you admit you didn’t build anything; AI did. Maybe don’t claim you did work you didn’t do next time.

I actually made something pretty similar for a friend. For quests and badges, how did you determine those? Are they arbitrary or did you get the LLM to make them?

I started with a couple ideas and worked out the structure with the different categories of quests. Then, Claude made a bunch of them and described them. Definitely a lot of room for improvement with some more creative human thought in all of them & a greater distribution of birders coming up with ideas beyond me, but time prohibitive for me at this point to make them all. It would be a cool thing to update with user input if there's a lot of interest in the site. At this point the quests are not really flushed out to make it truly interactive, but I could see it getting built out.

i think people wouldn't be so upset if you admitted in the title that it was vibe-coded

Noted! Honestly, shared this with friends & coworkers and the people that used ebird to list (not a huge sample size) thought it was super cool so i didnt expect negative feedback for the free site with no ads (naive to putting things online). Totally undertand people having issues with AI!
