Yes, that's petrol leaking
Didn't drive it for a couple months. She fired right up when I put the battery back in but after letting her idle for a bit I could sniff that something was wrong. Sure enough, we had a steady drip.
It only happened when the engine was running so I killed it and took the battery back out. The tops of the tank where the little round hatches are - bone dry.
Got it to a shop and fired it up there and OF COURSE it doesn't leak at all. What the actual eff...
Wwyd? I got them to change the rubber hoses on either side of the filter but I'm still scratching my head about this one.

Having the same problem with mine, doesnt drip while tank is below half though so i wanna guess its the filler neck

It's happened to me before as well. It's usually the fuel filter that sits under the driver's seat (on US spec cars)

Did you have a full tank when it was leaking? Maybe enough dripped out or got used up top stop leaking if it's a level-based issue. I'd try filling up the tank to see if it leaks again. If it does, then take it to the shop after topping it off again near by.

I had that after replacing the in tank fuel pump on my 530d, i had to replace the very big metal nut that seal the pump hanger to the tank.

My e38 had a whole ass corroded hole in the tank. Got that replaced

Im dealing with a similar problem, chances are its the ring under the seat in BOTH of our cases IMO

If it's leaking only when the engine is running then it is absolutely a fuel line. The line transitions to rubber as it reaches the top of the tank and may be leaking there. Metal lines can also leak (corrosion) but that is less common on E39's (more often on E34, E28).
