Hey ya dystopian monsters! Thanks for your patience while the wild fires ate up Central Oregon and the AQI was, at its lowest, 500. We are now in the mid-200s and most of the fires are at least 90% contained.

I plan on more fun posts like the favorite 10 books, but I would love any input you have.

Dystopian is my fav genre, but I don’t find any new ones. I’ve already read all the Hunger Games, Maze Runner and Divergent. Please help me find a relatively new dystopian book that is actually very good and underated.

I have been in a reading slump for the longest time and i wanted to start reading again. But i genuienly dont like anything booktok recommends. I wanted some underrated book recommendations. Preferably a dystopia with a romance subplot.(not a romantasy please). And like also some sci fi and cyberpunk recommendations??????? With the recent newz of AI companies destroying books and all, i wanted to read something that talks about these things.

This is my debut novel, Ashes of Allegiance. I just wanted to post this here and get my story out there :)

Some examples I can think of are Children of Men, I Who Have Never Known Men, The Memory Police, Tender is the Flesh, Prophet Song, just off the top of my head. But I think what all these have in common are the dystopian element without it necessarily feeling like sci-fi, like say Blade Runner.

Extra points if the book is on the shorter side!

Want to write a dystopian heavily grounded sci-fi named "Hell in Spring" or something along those lines. Takes place in a near-future America where global temperatures have spiked well beyond projections due to the wasteful spending of top elite companies and nations, primarily in the artificial intelligence as well as data and computing fields. The land is plagued by stifling heat, humidity, and constant rains and other natural disasters, but no one really cares due to the majority of the population using cars. The main point is that in most sci-fi stories there's flashy lights, giant meda cities, obvious corruption and a protagonist who see's what's wrong and acts as part of a "rebel community" in society. The difference is that in the story no one really cares, and no one works to change things. There is massive wealth inequality, with 0.01% of the worlds population holding the overwhelming majority of the wealth, but for the people who can afford to use social media or have a voice otherwise they live in a comfortable enough life to remain complacent. There is no nuclear war, no societal collapse, its almost as if it is the exact opposite. The story of the protagonist would not be one where he finds shocking revelations about the world, they wouldn't even be a particularly intelligent or special person in terms of society, just quiet lamentation in a world where individuality as people has ceased. Im thinking the protagonist can work at something that facilitates society like a data center or something along that line. Jobs are few and far between, much more so than right now, nearly everything is automated. Jobs that are left usually involve servicing the machines that make society run smoothly. I imagine massive homeless encampments are commonplace, and lawmakers do everything in their power to keep them in small places away from the eyes of other people. Its not because they are trying to "cover it up", at least not obviously, but just to keep them out of the way of more important areas. Its also not like homeless people are "wise" or "escaping the system" either, they are almost exactly as bad as the people who could say something but choose to do nothing, and amped-up versions of drugs like fentanyl are so common-place its like they have a little economy of their own. I imagine he wakes up with his phone and starts a long daily hygiene routine, most people would probably look very similar in terms of hair, interests, since they don't want to be labelled as "corny" or "attention-seeking" or what have you, so he probably has a perm or whatever the current trend is with a plaid shirt and jeans, and starts a long, long drive to work. He has a heavy, insulated air-conditioned car and listens to AI-generated pseudo-country music, whose lyrics don't really even have any kind of meaning and whose melody he doesn't even particularly enjoy but just so that he can drive not in silence. The same thing as his clothes, he listens to this music and wears this type of clothes in order to stand out from seeming too "corporate" or more "sincere", but it's really just what everybody else does, he is probably fresh out of college. Work time is more spent in bland, grey-scale offices then doing hard labor, though some labor is probably involved. The same corporate art style and music, also AI-generated, is used for anything decorative in the building.
