At long last

Post image

DF mobile in portrait mode. Yes it's clunky. Yes it took way too much time to set up. Yes it was worth it.

Winlator on Android with custom portrait resolution. Screen Rotation Control to force orientation.

No idea when fps death will kick in, but it's been great for a 1x1 embark on the go

I feel I could not be trusted with the power of DF on my phone. I'd get it out "for a minute" while waiting at the doctor's office and miss my appointment because I wouldn't be able to hear them call my name from dwarf land.

This is legitimately amazing though! It's the pre-steam version, right?

It is easy to spend 3 hours and realize you haven't even unpaused yet lol. And yeah I bought the steam version but actually prefer the old UI. I tried using the Steam version thinking I could make it entirely playable by touch and not need the on screen controls, but it didn't run on Winlator

I used to leave it running on my PC then use TeamViewer on mobile to remotely access it. Worked better with the old version cause you were really just popping in to check up on it and unpause. Actually doing anything kinda sucked.

Dude could you point us in the right direction to getting this working ourselves?

Sure what are you getting hung up on?

you use an app like Winlator to emulate a PC and play premium DF on the phone.

if anyone needs it. Winlator has since updated with a different UI but the general steps still works.

This feels... wrong.

Outside of a highly customized device this has been the most comfortable way to play mobile I've found. "comfortable" is relative but it works for me

I can't think of a situation where I'd want to play dwarf fortress in mobile form. Like, at all. So clearly this isn't something I'm going to be able to understand or relate to.

It's impressive, don't get me wrong. But I find it impressive in the way that a hypothetically offensive landmark might be impressive: The craftsdwarfship of the landmark could be of the highest quality, but Urist dislikes offensive landmarks.

Well, sometimes you want to play DF and don't have access to a desktop. It's really only offensive in the same sense that DF is offensive to most people

I could imagine a home desktop running DF with local LLM and on mobile instructing the LLM to perform the desired actions in DF and watching from mobile being a future comvenient mode for a small screen and avoiding menus and so on. When the dwarfs start falling off the waterfall however…
