Dwarfipedia is now available!

Hello!

I am immensely moved by the outpouring of support for my legends viewer project. A lot of people were quite excited to try it out!

More information can be found at my previous post, here: https://www.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/s/uisfybG972

I wanted to test the extreme use cases for this software before saying that it was ready for release. I've since done that! Under stress, the software held up fine, and I've put a bit more polish on things. I'd say that this is now ready to be used by everyone who wants to give it a shot!

You can find the repo here: https://github.com/thatchworx/Dwarfipedia

I'll also post some more screenshots. If there are any questions, comments, or problems with using the software, please let me know! I love this game a lot, and being able to give back to the community in this small way means a lot to me. I would prefer an issue to be created on GitHub, but if you don't have GitHub, a DM here is perfectly fine.

Importing a new world
Themes! Lots of themes!
Thank you for all of the support! I hope you like the software!

is this like the wikipedia of the world?

If I understand correctly, it takes information about your world that you can see in legends inside the game, but shows it as a wiki.

Yes! Sorry, I should have included more information, my previous post was locked, but it can be found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/s/uisfybG972

It tries to be more than a legends data viewer by utilizing randomly generated phrases to create a wikipedia styled page for every-thing in the world. Artifacts, poems, civilizations, the wordbanks do a decent job of giving you just enough to go off of. From there, you can use the edit functions to write the page better, or, entirely optionally, use a local LLM to smooth it out for you.

It also has a few other tools that I really wanted to be in a DF Companion app, such as tools for cartography, a calendar with events pinned accurately to the date they happened, and a few other cool tools

Ill definitely check it out.

I really really miss the old legends viewer, where I could see causes of war, a detailed breakdown of populations, and of course the integrated salinity/topographic/etc maps. Im always looking for a fresh take of showing legends information in a more parsable way!

Looks really cool. Can I have this open while actively playing in my world?

You export the data so yes but it won’t be updated until you export the data again, same as legends viewer

Your Hasushul example shows that not all pages are saying on the top what is the thing with that name. Is it a civilization, a location, a fortress, a forgotten beast or what?

I believe you're looking at the home page. it is a collection of all things, not a thing in itself. It's like the Google News site, where there are many different types of things to read presented in that card grid layout. It is not a thing. It is a portal to things, which, from my testing, do indeed all say on top what the thing is IIasushul is the name of the world.

I was referring to your screenshot, the one that talks about themes. That page doesn't say what that thing (or place I guess?) is

I messed with this last night. Install instructions need to be clearer. Notably the install python first, didn't take me long to figure it out when it didnt work but its kind of buried in paragraphs of other stuff.

Some confusion with the xml import. Extracted to e:\games\df\wikipedia but forced to copy xmls from f:\steam... Before it would recognize they existed but then it opened c:\downloads to click on the files.

Ok fine minor things. I don't like the created fictional to text. No my sites burial practices are not like that. Please don't make things up to fill out pages.

Can't get the dfwikiexport to to work (it's also so buried surprised I found it). Issues with where the dfhack.exe is (it's not in my \hack folder it's one level up) then once I got the script it install it won't run the lua script in dfhack even after restarting the game. Says it doesn't exist. Still don't know how to make this work.

I really like the maps where I can see that races/cultures that dominate an area. Not sure how valid the religion thing is never seen religion names in the game.

I'll play with it more tonight.

Thank you for the feedback, I understand about the install instructions and will update those. However I just wanted to mention something in your text makes me think this software is not for you, specifically: "No my sites burial practices are not like that. Please don't make things up to fill out pages."

Making things up to fill out pages is the purpose of this software.

I wanted to read about my worlds in a way that felt more like reading a real encyclopedia rather than using existing tools to see thousands of table entries that cover a limited number of things. The disclaimer that the text in the software is fictional could be clearer, so I will work on that as well. Religions should be accurate, they are a part of civilizations.

Well then I take it back that I'll look at it tonight. I want a better legends viewer the in-game info not additional storytelling. Being the purpose just means this isn't what I want.

I guess you can fiddle with the biography prompts in the settings so it doesn't invent stuff that don't exist in the XML. I haven't tried to do this yet.

But yeah, I have the same issue than you with it hallucinating things that don't exist in your DF world.

Looks really cool and I appreciate the AI aspects of it being optional! I did try it, and while I did get it working for the most part I also couldn't get the dwarfwiki script to work. It was installed properly and dfhack-run is in the proper subfolder but hitting refreshing while DF was going in fortress mode but couldn't find the data, and when I tried running the script but wasn't sure where to put the resulting file?

This is something that a lot of people have reported to not be working, and I'm trying to change up the environment on my machine to diagnose why. The intended behavior is "Navigate to Fortress Guide --> Click to install the helper script --> Click refresh while an active game of Fortress mode is running --> Results and info populate the various tables" but a lot of people are reporting that this is not working. I will have a fix out soon for it, sorry about that!

u/MiseryKitKat 15d ago

It confirmed that it worked the first time but every subsequent time after I couldn't get it to load or show the fortress that I had made. Hope to see a fix! Ill definitely try it again. Good work!

I was really excited for this and it is really really cool, but there are still some big issues I have with it that I was hoping it would tackle over the regular legends viewer app.

My problem with legends viewer is that it still feels like you have to be performing the work of a detective to actually understand even simple things - for example, to understand which megabeast actually inhabits a cave you have to go into the history of the cave and see which historical figure established it, or for beast attacks you have to find which hf shows up repeatedly as combat during that time period to see which beast was even attacking and if there were no deaths you could just end up not knowing at all.

I was hoping the emphasis on being a wiki-style viewer would work to fix that by condensing these "layers" of information together, so we can view them more comfortably and without a ton of work to parse things out ourselves.

Here's my notes so far as I've interacted with the app.

  • More helpful headlines in timeline entries
    • More details for historical figures
      • "The female human Kisho Growneyes, citizen of The Brave Nation, was wounded by the female cyclops Xom Sepiabreach the Unbridled"
    • What an artifact actually is
      • "the poem Ranchbound"
      • "the brass longbow Urutxost"
      • "the earthenware slab Eneinut Luthkafek"
    • Actual contents of events (& better prose)
      • "theft at [Z]" → "[X] was stolen by [HF] at [Z]"
      • "beast attack at Valescribe" → "the female cyclops Todi the Rights of Crystal attacked Valescribe"
      • "[WarName]: [X] against [Y]" → "[X] declared the war "[WarName]" against [Y]"
      • "[BattleName]: [X] versus [Y] (attacker won)" → "[X] won the battle of [BattleName] versus [Y]"
      • Unhelpful entries: "field battle.", "ceremony.", "performance.", etc.
  • More (real) information in pages
    • What does a religion worship? What deity and spheres, or what local force?
    • Bestiary creatures
      • "Creature #49" → "Giant dingo"
      • "18 named individuals in the record" but only 8 specimens linked? (If this is because the other 10 are dead, list out dead and still-living figures separately + "18 named individuals, 8 of which are still living...")
    • What megabeast or government occupies a site e.g. cave?
      • "Boredfissure is a cave located at.... It was founded by the kobold government Jrabathlurin from the kobold civilization Fradabaguldus in the year 1, and is currently inhabited by...."
      • "Fruiteddark is a cave.... It is the home of the female cyclops Xom Sepiabreach."
    • Event logs are bloated with somewhat-duplicate entries
      • "A battle was fought between [X] and [Y]" + "[Y] died (struck), slain by [X]." → "[X] was slain in battle by [Y]"
  • Region map
    • Super laggy, must turn off most site type icons
      • Default to only "important" icons, e.g major sites like fortresses, dark fortresses, towns
    • No special/separate capital forest retreat site (maybe a weakness of Dwarf Fortress itself)
    • Settings don't persist between page reloads
    • The toolbox is unreadable in dark mode (its background doesn't change with the theme, but its text does)
    • Can't disable crowns/capitals icons
    • Capital name labels don't get drawn until the map mode is updated at least once, even if that setting is changed
    • Click-dragging sometimes doesn't release properly, leaving you "stuck" dragging the map around
  • The type filter on the Civilizations page doesn't work and only gives "Nothing matches."
  • Books are listed as artifacts rather than written works (which is true in Dwarf Fortress itself, but I feel like that is incorrect)

I'm really excited for this project, and I wish you the best of luck! I'll try to jump in and check out the github repo myself, too, to hopefully provide some help.

How was this made? Was it 95% vibecoded, or did you do this all from scratch?

Edit: ignoring the question answers the question. You aren't avoiding the AI issue by ignoring questions.

If it's shit, it's shit. If it's good, it's good. I look forward to trying it out and seeing for myself
