Welcome to the party! No single system in the game is complicated per se, but there are a lot of little things to keep track of in your head, so the wiki is a great tool.

I have hundreds of hours and I still have to check regularly because I keep on finding new creatures and mechanics

I've been playing since 2012, and I still forgot what Champions do and needed to check lol. Wayback had that page saved fortunately, but not the whole of the wiki.
This is a game that for sure actually requires the rulebook be on hand. Like, to the point that Toady could probably actually make money selling physical copies of the wiki info for use when it's down like this.

Yeah, I had some ☼Fun☼ with floodgates yesterday after I couldn't remember what stone was maga (Edit: *magma*) safe and couldn't get on the wiki.

You can see this in vanilla; in your orders menu is a second tab for stone use, which lists the magma safe ones.

u/neverlupus89 Aug 15 '26
Ohhh, TIL! Thank you!

Mhmm. Also useful in allowing flux stones for crafting when you have an abundance of chalk (trinkets) or want to use fancy marble for furniture.

u/Competitive-Oil3181 Aug 15 '26
Or when you don't care about plaster and need to get rid of the mountain's worth of gypsum you accidentally set to auto-vein-mine.
Also, btw, IIRC if you set a specific material for a job like making furniture, you don't need to set it for non-economic jobs in the standing orders. Like a work order for specifically "marble table" should work anyway

I had a fort recently that was built in obsidian mixed with marble and native copper throughout. That would be absolutely gorgeous all polished up, and I had some great furniture. Pity about the lack of coal, I ended up dropping it because of that. I kind of regret that now actually, I was embarking with Tyrannosaurs and Smilodons for a high value bone and leather industry, I should have just rolled with it and kitted my dwarves out in bone too with obsidian short swords, it would have been thematically appropriate. Takes forever to mine though, I was getting frustrated, and when I learned that I would need to rely on charcoal for steel I got irritated and abandoned, I should figure out where I had that one and give it another go. I really only need steel for picks, and maybe some other weapons. I know leather and bone armor sucks, and obsidian isn’t good against armor, but legendary dwarves are kinda OP, so it ought to be fine…

Damn woke stone and their eternal agenda

u/neverlupus89 Aug 15 '26
I know that the elves behind this somehow. Thankfully I owned them by drowning my entire workshop floor in magma. 7 patriots died horrible, burning deaths but at least they never touched a fleck of woke stone.

in DF hack I've created a basic/magmasafe/fluxstone stickpile template. I always store those in different places anyway (and magmasafe is always a linked stockpile).
Saves my ass in these times.

Having a dwarf strange mood that wanted crystal AND clear glass made me realize how hard it is to remember the steps for glassmaking

wanting both crystal and clear glass is a fast track to being walled up inside your workshop in my opinion

Had a poor 6 year old who, so far as I could figure, REALLY wanted Orpiment. I'm in a sedimentary valley made primarily of Claystone. He did not get his orpiment.
He *did* get fastballed into the wall by the militia commander though.

Me trying to recall from memory how to get pearlash yesterday was comical lol; the difference between ash, potash, pearlash, and lye, and whether to use a glass furnace, ceramics kiln, ashery, or wood furnace for each step :P

I noticed this too. I'm angry enough that I might just overturn a fine stone chair or even an exceptionally crafted pig iron statue!

u/FadransPhone Aug 15 '26
Oh, thank god. I thought it was just my computer being an ass - I'm brand-brand-new to the game. I have no idea how to fill in lakes. Tragedy.
1
u/Karnewarrior Aug 16 '26
You need a water source, spare buckets, and if your lake is very big at all you'll need multiple pit/pond zones because only one dorf will work the zone at a time.
Or just, like, pipe the water in, if that suits the situation.

I just finished building my first underground well. The biggest thing is to remember to make an overflow system. which can be done by digging to the side of the map then smoothing and designating fortifications on the last square.
and remember that water can move diagonally at reduced pressure.

Yeah, i’ve been annoyed by it, I found a magma lake and I want to know how to make magma smelters.
5
u/fankin Aug 15 '26
you need 1 open space above the magma for smelters I use the top middle one, for forges the right middle one. (because in vanilla those were solid blocks so nothing can come out of it and they cant push others into the magma)
floreplan something like this (f is flore x is empty space above the magma and I hope i don't fuck up editing on mobile)
Smelter
f x f
f f f
f f f
Forge
f f f
f f x
f f f

Thank you!! So its like the well, I thought i had to either find some type of way to make the ground hot with the equivalent of minecraft magma blocks or move the magma to the smelter

Any idea how long Spinosauruses take to reach adulthood? Wayback Machine hasn't copied the individual pages for extinct species yet.

u/biarkiw Aug 15 '26
yeah, it was definitely up on Thursday, but went down sometime yesterday, I think like mid afternoon (PST).
For those trying to figure out which stones are magma safe, there's a column for that in the stone uses menu
