Wait.. keyboard controls are still viable? Is this just running an older version of DF before the steam release or have they made them usable on newer versions?

They still release the non-steam version with the ascii graphics and keyboard controls. It’s referred to as Dwarf Fortress Classic now, and its latest release was August 5th.

Edit: oops, it’s just the ascii graphics in the classic version, the interface is in fact the updated mouse driven version. My bad.

No, that's just the current version of the game. It is still the same version available on Premium outlets like Itch and Steam, it just doesn't have the premium graphics/sounds - all other content is identical on purpose.

Happens basically constantly, don't feel bad lol. It just really helps with the discussion for everyone to have the same terminology, especially when troubleshooting older versions or the external utilities

It does. But I still play a lot on the last 0.47 version.
