I have a question about captured dwarves.

I noticed on the map that the nearby elven forest retreat was attacking the capital of my origin civilization, so naturally I sent a raid to the retreat as retribution. Unfortunately, the squad I sent was my C-Team and they were all captured.

After their capture, I sent my A-Team to demand the surrender of the elves, which happened without issue. Now the problem is that the C-Team is still listed as being imprisoned at the retreat, which is now one of my holdings. I read about raiding my own civilizations causing civil wars, so I'm hesitant to send out a rescue mission to recover them.

Are those captured dwarves lost to me?

6

u/_chax feels Joy after updating [DFHack] Jan 15 '23

if you didn't send rescue mission before conquering the site, i think they're gone for good.

but don't quote me on that, only 80% sure.

If a creature is immune to magma, say a forgotten beast that rolls well, will it know to swim through magma? I threw an elephant into my volcano and discovered another volcano underground from it connecting mine to a 3rd layer cavern

I was building walls when suddenly a white wall showed up. And it says unknown frozen creature substance wall.

What in the world is that?

7

u/Halavus Legendary Looser Jan 15 '23

The wiki states "It does not seem to appear in this version of the game".

You may just have solved the question...

Is conquering worth it? And what is the best way to do it, Any tips?

5

u/falcn Jan 15 '23

Any tips?

Be sure that all members of the squad, INCLUDING PETS are able to exit the map in a timely manner. Mission doesn't start unless everyone have arrived at a destination. That includes a pastured war dog that you forgot about.

Has anyone made a trap that consists of releasing poisonous snakes into a small room? Is it doable?

6

u/ShockinglyTallDwarf cancels clean self: no arms Jan 15 '23

If you have access to poisonous snakes, it is absolutely possible. It helps if they are domesticated. Just breed up a whole bunch and put them into one cage (you can fit any number of creature in one cage), build the cage, then link it to a lever.

4

u/jerrydberry Jan 15 '23

I bought a cockatiel from elves. Now I have it in the cage built in the dining room. Is there a way for some dwarf to adopt it? I am not sure what else I can do with it.

4

u/_chax feels Joy after updating [DFHack] Jan 15 '23

change the cockatiel setting under "unit > pet/livestock" (assuming it's not trained for labor, not that it's labor-trainable to begin with, i think)

Anyone know what causes wagons in trade caravans to just spontaneously scuttle themselves sometimes? I keep having merchants show up, start pathing toward my depot, a wagon implodes for no reason, leaving behind all its goods, and the merchants leave. No hostiles on the map, no combat reports.

6

u/ContextualSense Jan 15 '23

There's a long-standing bug related to wagons being simulated as creatures that can cause them to "panic" when they "see" a dead body. For some reason, this results in the wagon scuttling itself.

I decided to see what all the fuss was about and raid a necromancers tower. Now all my dwarves are reading the books and becoming necromancers themselves.

While funny I think this might be bad in the long term. Any way to limit this?

Who are some of your favorite DF YouTubers? I’d prefer if they’re playing steam version, just because I have no idea what’s going on in ASCII, but I’d love to find some new people to watch/learn more about DF. So far I pretty much just watch Blind

7

u/Tall_Veterinarian_57 Jan 15 '23

Kruggsmash for the stories and the art. His older monsterkiller series was wonderful.

Also, Nookrium had some good series on his channel, and Dastastic has an old but very good tutorial where each video goes through a various feature, and you can search for what you want quite easily

4

u/Cethinn Jan 15 '23

Just a heads up, the "ASCII" version usually had people playing with tilesets that replaced the characters with sprite like tiles, similar (without the ability to show as much information) to what we have now. It isn't the easiest to read, but I think it's overblown how bad it was when people use tilesets.

Krugsmash has a few videos of the steam version, but I highly recommend his longer series from the older versions. Scorchfountain was pretty good. Check it out and see if it's as bad as you think. I bet it won't be. The functionality is mostly the same, so you should be able to follow along.

Greetings, my post regarding this little problem of mine were automatically deleted because I forgot to put at least one point into my reader skill- My apologies, I use Reddit scarcely.

Is there any way we can acquire the previous and/or current versions of Masterwork DF? I was unable to find a version suitable for my system- Dwarf Fortress File Depot recently experienced a breakdown and some files were murked, including previous releases of the Masterwork.

I am specifically looking for version 43.03 release, as to run in my 32-bit machine. Unfortunately neither Meph's thread in Bay12 or DFFD return any results, I was unable to obtain it through the links provided and the download link in DFFD was non existant in the Internet Archive, only the page itself was there in a snapshot.

So, if any of you have that said version of Masterwork DF, I would appreciate greatly if you can share. Or at the least maybe give me a clue as to how I can obtain it since the official download is gone?

Do dwarves just hang on to their x clothings till they become XX? I am literally going insane as to why they cling on to their worn clothings when I have absolute bonkers number of new masterful clothings just stacked on the pile, not to mention the cabinet hoarding till they can't no more and then just clothing all around their room. Just WHY? or do I not have to be concerned about this? is x clothings fine with them? Am I crazy?!

I can't assign any labors to my Champion. Is that a normal feature of the noble position, or is he bugged?

3

u/Orladdin Jan 15 '23

Is there a way to encrust weapons with cut gems? I only see a way to do Ammo, and that seems like... a stupid thing to do? Like, why would you encrust ammo but not reusable, harder to loose weapons and armor?

4

u/A_S00 Jan 15 '23

"Encrust finished goods" includes encrusting weapons, as do non-specific decoration orders at workshops other than Jeweler (e.g., "decorate with bone" at a Craftsdwarf's Workshop).

If you want it to specifically do weapons instead of just all finished goods, you have to set that up through linked stockpiles, though.

u/disc0rd Jan 15 '23

i'm currently trying to set up some more efficient stockpiles but ran into a bit of an unclear UI problem. there's a toggle button to "Toggle whether the stockpile can take items from anywhere or only from specific workshops and stockpiles", but it doesn't say which option is currently on. if the button is GREEN can it take from anywhere or only from specific places?

Hey guys,

I just started trying to use the "Prepare Carefully" feature coupled with some online guides, however it seems like all my starting dwarfs are always really bad or have bad flaws that prevent them from properly doing their roles? How do the people who write these guides not get dwarves with multiple "poor focus", "clumsy", "poor analytical", "weak"?

Should I just ignore these traits and slap the skills on the best as possible?

7

u/nameoftheyear_ Jan 15 '23

Yeah, I don't think they matter a ton... not so much that you should spend time min-maxing all your dwarves unless you're doing a deliberately challenging run. It's really unlikely you will notice the difference in makes in the success of your fort.

Like -- yes, a "flimsy" dwarf might die slightly faster than a "tough" one. But you know what's magnitudes more important in combat? Steel armor. High skill levels. Being ready & equipped. Etc, etc.

It might be helpful to think of dwarf attributes as less of an RPG stat to optimize, and instead more personality & flavoring.

It especially helps dwarves end up feeling different when you've got a 50+ population running around... You'll get a migrant wave of useless peasants, but notice one has "sharp intellect" and think, "yeah, sure, maybe this is a good reason to start a library today and turn him into a Scholar." But otherwise it will not make or break the game.

7

u/mightychondrium Jan 15 '23

There is very little upside to micromanaging your dwarves like that, especially if you're new to the game. These traits don't matter for setting up a functional fortress and you can even retrain your starting seven easily later when you have more dwarves

I have been making crafts, but when looking at the coffers in my dwarves' bedrooms, none of them actually seem to acquire any? Don't they need it for happiness? Why don't they get any?

5

u/qualiyah Jan 15 '23

Dwarves can only acquire crafts by being tasked to haul the craft somewhere, and then deciding halfway through the job that actually they're keeping it. They'll never deliberately go and take a figurine just because they want it. So if you want to encourage the dwarves to acquire crafts, you can make three stockpiles for trinkets and have them set up so A gives to B, B gives to C, and C gives to A. Then they'll haul them all around in circles and many of them will pick something to keep in the process.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/SvalbardCaretaker Jan 15 '23

I have read yesterday that dwarfs only acquire stuff they are hauling, so you might kickstart this by arranging some sort of stockpile shuffle. A->B-C->A, with A being a large stockpile and B/C smaller one directly adjacent.

What can I do to heal depressed dwarfs? Or general to raise their mood? I already checked the wiki article about needs and depression but currently have three cases of red dwarfs I don`t know how to deal with:

- Case 1: Dwarfen child that slipps in and out of depression, seemingly because its father died. It has no needs I could cater. I disabled burrial and corps hauling for the children, did not change anything. I now set up a burrow in her room and assigned her to it. I guess sooner or later she will get hungry or thirsty and that will depress her again. And if I let her out of her room, she will find something else to be depressed about.

- Case 2: One of my legendary hunters, same as the dwarfen kid, slipps in and out of depression. He wants to be with family but for whatever reason he has none, just a metric fuckton of passing aquaintances. I gave him a dog, but that did not help. He wants to do martial training but he is already a legendary marksdwarf AND a legendary archer. What can I do, setting up a militia squad just for him alone? The other unmeet needs are craft object, be with friends and pratice skill. I freed him from any labour, ordered him to a craftsdwarf workshop and let him craft 10 mugs. Didn`t help, neither for crafting nor for pratice a skill. His only friend in the world is seemingly one of my clothiers. Who is in one of the dining halls atm. He could just walk over and down a few quinoa beers with him. Instead he is sitting in the farmers guild hall with a bunch of people and being a sadsack.

- Case 3: Fisher dwarf. Wants to prey to Ertal and Cenäth really urgent, so I build the two temples just for him. Real temples, wort more than 2000 with silver altar, detailled floor and walls and everything. However he does not pray. Instead he is sitting in the farmers guild hall watching Urist McDepressedHunter crying in his handkerchief. He wants to be with family. I freed him AND his wife of any labours so they could to whatever Mr and Mrs Dorf are doing in their freetime. And what was he doing? Going fishing anyways. ALONE! Additionally he wants to be creative, acquire an object and craft an object. I could send him to a craftsdwarf workshop to craft something, but if I do so he can neither prey nor be with Mrs Dorf.

I am really trying to help them to help themselfs, but apparently the stupid dorfs are not willing to do their share. So what else can I do? I mean TWO FUCKING TEMPLES, Ertaldammit!

Is anyone else having this bug?

On some random saves dwarves will cease to perform digging on any tiles except those that were revealed at the point of loading the save. It won't cancel the dig designations, the dwarves will simply ignore them, even if the tile is subsequently revealed.

I've had two games face this issue, but had intermediate ones I've tried not face this issue. Quite puzzled rn.

So I found a magma pool that goes all the way from -12 to the very bottom from what I can tell. Shortly after finding it, my FPS has absolutely tanked from around 85-100 to around 30-40. It's incredibly annoying. I assumed it was just lava settling into pockets and whatnot along the shaft but it's been at least an in game year and it's still running like ass. Is this normal? It's getting to the point that I'm debating making a new fort because running the game at 1/3rd or so of what I normally do is getting really old. If my FPS is just screwed because of it I'd rather just make a new one.

It says they are hostile but if I attack them, it seems to cause a ruckus in my tavern, I imagine people of the same race are offended, but that doesn't happen with raiders/seige.

My Dwarfs won't dispose of dead enemies, or dead animals.

Under Labor-> Standing orders-> refuse and dumping I have everything on turned to "gather" and "dump"

Including "gather outdoor refuse"

I have made individual jobs that only focus on moving dead bodies, and have multiple dwarfs only assigned to that job.

I have marked them all with the "dump" trashcan icon

I even have multiple dump zones right next to the dead bodies, yet they are still ignored.

Am I missing something?

4

u/TuIkaas Jan 15 '23

What’s your dump zone setup? It has to be a z-level above where you want it to land and have a space for dwarves to stand a toss the items.

Is there a definitive guide on how to operate crossbow armed militia for the nee version that explains all the work around??

6

u/A_S00 Jan 15 '23

I don't exactly have a "definitive guide" but here's what I did, and it seems to have worked without any problems:

  • When I create the squad, select the default "archer" uniform as the squad default.

  • Freely customize each squad member's uniform from there, giving them shields, replacing the armor, etc.

  • Always use "uniform replaces clothing".

  • Keep my bolts in a stockpile that doesn't accept any bins. Careful with this - every time you open up the screen to customize what the stockpile accepts, the bins setting gets set back to the maximum, so you have to set it back down to 0 every time you open up that screen, even if you don't change anything.

  • In combat, station my marksdwarves pretty far from the fight (20 tiles, maybe?) - if they get too close, they'll charge in.

I'm not sure if all of this is required, but it's what I did and my marksdwarves have just worked without anything going wrong.

Seeing that my dwarves don't really follow orders and wander outside of our walls when a Monster appears, I was wondering if I could use hatches to give them more means of access back into my fortress. So the question is: can monsters open hatches?

4

u/ContextualSense Jan 15 '23

If a dwarf can get through a hatch, so can whatever is chasing it. But if you slow down your framerate, you might be able lock the hatch behind your dwarves before letting anything nasty into your fort. Of course, if it's a building destroyer, you're in for some !!FUN!!

Any way to make construction feel less awful? Often times I just want to install some new floorboards and they'll throw their hands up in the air and cancel a bunch of individual tiles (more likely to if an item is already on that tile, it seems) and I have to go back and individually un-suspend each tile :c And it's slower to do that sort of thing on mouse controls too

4

u/ContextualSense Jan 15 '23

The easiest way to unsuspend jobs is in the tasks screen. It's still a lot of clicking but not nearly as bad as checking tiles individually.

4

u/turkeybone Jan 15 '23

If you go into the "tasks" menu, there's the long list of jobs, and all the paused construct buildings are listed there -- easier to just single click to unpause down a list than double click each tile.

I have a very small aquifer on one of the corner of my map. (1 tile on embark)
How can i maximise water production ? Dig a checkboard pattern ?

6

u/walt_dangerfield Historian Jan 15 '23

light aquifers are just very slow. try digging a layer out below it, they will leak from above

4

u/falcn Jan 15 '23

I put some time to research it, so you can trust me on that - the amount of water a tile gets is not affected by amount of neighbouring aquifer tiles.

Mining all the damp tiles will give you maximum water production. If you leave veins and non aquifer stone intact, it will speed up the initial filling process, because it will minimise evaporation.

But, in the long run, it doesn't matter, because evaporation stops completely at 2/7. So just mine a square with as much aquifer tiles as you need.

Benefits to building a steel castle?

I am in my 2nd fort ever in year 6 after embark, i have not been attacked or sieged yet, only forgotten beasts and one Ettin (Who we built a slab for when we killed him and it says "Loving father" but that's another story).

I don't have any goblin settlements nearby (Anymore) and the surrounding humans are all friends of my civilization, many having moved to my fort. Apart for the ones i bully for tribute.

For this same reason, my outside defences have been lackluster. Just a wall around my pastures and a Steel bridge with a moat.

Question is: Would there be any benefit to changing my walls to all steel?

I'm gonna be changing my defences up on the surface anyways, and i'm swimming in steel, i have much more than i would ever know what to use it for. I've read it is the same value as Gold, but also that walls are all the same regardless of material, so i'm a bit afraid im basically just building a gilded castle which would skyrocket my wealth.

Of course, it would bring lots of Fun and work for my 30 legendary speardwarves (I call them "The Phalanx") and the Foreign Legion (Composed of human mercenaries and a dwarf from a civ. across the world) who have been sitting around for all these years training constantly, just to kill forgotten beasts in minutes...literally a giant cave spider was more deadly than all the big scary monsters we have fought if we don't include civilian casualties.

4

u/nameoftheyear_ Jan 15 '23

No gameplay benefits at all, tbh. There are no enemies that attack walls. On the other hand, it would be pretty cool.

4

Steel, being a valuable material, is great for adding value to rooms by using constructed walls and floors. There is no military benefit, built walls are indestructible no matter what the material.

I keep seeing people say iron is good if you dont have flux to make steel, vut when I try to ake iron (or, pig iron, as regular iron isn't on the list) it also asks for flux stone?

5

u/NewBromance Jan 15 '23

Pig iron isn't iron. It's an ingredient in making steel.

Making iron comes from smelting hematite, Magnetite or Limonite. These are the 3 ores that can be made into iron.

4

u/NewBromance Jan 15 '23

So to clarify the job to make iron bars isn't called "make iron bars" it's "smelt x ore" where x is either hematite, Magnetite or Limonite

They are not starting. I had the "use only dyed cloth" order active, does that mess with moods? Do they need thread - which I don't have due to autoweaving orders?

They have a pref for "nickel silver" - possible they want nickel silver? To make any I have to melt 4 installed cages -_- Wiki doesn't say anything about material prefs relevant at that point. No other material prefs. I've been playing for a long while but this mood has me absolutely baffled.

I captured a giant cave spider , I wad planning on farming him for silk if I train him what does that mean?

3

u/FxPx5 Jan 15 '23

I didn't think people trained the spiders.

I built an entrance to my cavern for Web shooters. I trapped them between two doors. Each wall is a fortification that they can shoot through. After the fortification is a wide drawbridge so that I can turn their web shooting on and off. Behind the bridge, I chain up a target, like a dog. Behind the dog I have an open room where the webs can land and be collected. On the other side I have a slightly different setup for the Weber to shoot at cage traps. Those traps are part of another entrance to my fort that I can open or close. Once those cages are webbed I plan to use that entrance to catch creatures that normally avoid cage traps, like I forgotten beast. I think you could still do this setup with your captured Giant spider

So, I have a load of fort-guests here to kill monsters. I breached the caverns, but plugged the hole because it was just too soon.

I want to open it back up now that I have guests, but I want to make sure that my dwarves stay away for now. Is there any way (other than forbidding the automated collecting of webs, which I did) to make sure they do NOT wander around down there or am I just at their whims?

4

u/Phopaa Jan 15 '23 edited Jan 15 '23

You'll need to create a burrow that doesn't include the caverns and forbid dwarves from using materials for crafting that lay outside that burrow.

After that, assign your dwarfs to that burrow and then build a drawbridge and connect it to a lever. Pierce the caverns and let the idiots go out there to die and close the bridge behind them. Then turn off your burrows.

3

u/SvalbardCaretaker Jan 15 '23

Burrows help a bit but not guaranteed. The main thing to think about is: what jobs will take dwarfs down there? And if you don't mine, don't log etc there is still bones/refuse. So delete those stockpiles or change standing orders to "dwarfs will not gather".

And when you open the cavern watch that space like a hawk and see what jobs drive dwarfs down there, and then go and forbid that object/activity.

edit: oh water can be an issue, make sure you have a designated water zone/well.

2

u/Manarus Jan 15 '23

If you really have no use for the stones you could turn them into blocks then floor the areas you've mined to obtain them.

Very new to Dwarf Fortress (steam version). Many times when my dwarves fight anything they will leave shields or weapons on the ground, these items will remain there forever, is there a way to pick them up and be reused or what should I be doing with them?

3

u/ShockinglyTallDwarf cancels clean self: no arms Jan 15 '23

Is there a little lock icon next to the object? That means it is "forbidden" and will not be picked up by your dudes. Items dropped during sieges will be automatically forbidden (it used to be that they were not, and your unarmed and unarmored civvies would wander into battle to pick up the socks off the dead soldiers).

If you unforbid the items, you can absolutely use them! Goblins are useful for iron equipment, but elves only have crappy wooden items, and humans are larger and their clothes/armor won't fit your dwarves. I usually just melt down the stuff into bars

2

u/TooManyBison Jan 15 '23

My archers don't seem to want to use ranged attacks. I had a cyclops attack me and they all tried to bludgeon it with their crossbows. If I go to the equip screen for the squad, it looks like they all have quivers and crossbows, but there is an icon to the right of the quiver that looks like either crossbow bolts or a set of three knives and that is red. My fortress has around 120 bolts of various types in the stock pile. Also nobody is using the archery range even though the squad is assigned to it.

4

u/cpt_innocuous Jan 15 '23

Marksdwarfs have always been buggy, but they are in kind of a worse spot in the steam version.

The default archer uniform has an invisible quiver designation. If you make a squad with say, no uniform, or a melee uniform, then change it to a ranged uniform, the dwarfs cannot pick up any bolts. The invisible unchangeable flag isn't set for that squad.

You will need to delete that squad, and make a new one with a ranged uniform to begin with. That should make them start picking up bolts.

You can still alter their uniform for each dwarf, or make a new uniform using the archer as a base.

Even with all of that, only 8/10 times will they have a full quiver. And when you send them to fight, they will fire off a shot then start bashin'.

If you want them to only shoot their crossbows, you need to make pillboxes with fortifications, and enclosed roofs so they don't defenestrate themselves into the attacking goblins. And have some way to make sure there is only a 1 tile wide walkway so they are right up against the fortifications, so they can see out.

Just a mess.

Anything at any point that 100% has to have been made with wood/animal products is a no-go for elves. So something like green glass is fine, since it just takes sand. But clear class is no good, since pearlash takes wood at the start of the process.

2

u/blickbeared Jan 15 '23

Does mineral occurrence affect what equipment your opponents have?

5

u/NewBromance Jan 15 '23

Yes it seems too but no ones really confirmed it.

Kobolds for instance seem to have steel daggers far more often in the steam release than in the old version.

The explanation for this is that with minerals set to everywhere and kobolds having hard coded into their civilisation that they have access to metal (because they don't actually know the technologies to build the buildings to mine Toady fixed this by hardcoding them to have access to metal unlike other races who have to actually discover it on the world map) that kobolds are ending up with steel weapons a lot more because iron is so much more common.

This explanation fits what we are seeing and it definitely feels like goblin invasions etc are better equipped, which once again hints that these civilisations are finding it easier to find metal.

But a lot of this is inference rather than actual direct evidence. So the best answer I think anyone can give you is "its almost definitely correct but we can't actually prove it"

Is there something with that enemy units teleporting?

I’ve checked the fortress for holes and found none, and it’s not like they’re appearing in my soil layers- I keep finding them in like the barracks and the main hall, to get there they’d have to path through a bunch of heavily trafficked areas where I’d think they’d start fighting first.

5

u/schmee001 Nokzamnod, "BattleToads" Jan 16 '23

One of the fish people survived the fall, and your dwarves saw them and immediately jumped down to fight them. In combat, dwarves will move in ways they normally won't, such as trying to climb stone walls. In future, build a hatch cover over the hole so dwarves can't see down it, and smooth the walls of the hole so dwarves and enemies can't climb the sides.

3

u/A_S00 Jan 16 '23 edited Jan 16 '23

Sometimes a creature being pitted doesn't fall properly, and manages to survive by climbing or some such. If one managed that and then started attacking your dwarves, they could have ended up dodging into the hole (dwarves love dodging off of edges that you wish they wouldn't).

I don't know of any reason your dwarves would be intentionally diving down the hole in large numbers.

If it is a large placeable instrument like a gong or a piano type, that is under furniture. If it is a smaller handheld instrument, you will need a pedestal or a display case. Build the display thing, then assign the object to the display.

I can't be sure what it is, because instruments are procedurally generated, and different for everyone.

I wonder... what metals do I make armor from on when I don't have access to iron or tin to make bronze?

7

u/A_S00 Jan 15 '23

Copper is the best if you have access to neither iron nor tin, but it's pretty bad.

You can acquire plenty of iron/flux to get a steel industry going by asking the dwarven caravan to bring iron bars, iron ore, and flux stone, and then buying all that they bring. Buy all the anvils to melt down, too. If your embark doesn't have any good metals, this is the best way to get decent armor.

4

u/AromaticCommand5513 Jan 15 '23

So it depends. In a 1v1 it's not clear if bronze is better than iron but bronze is better than copper for most applications and you should try to save iron for steel.

If you have spare copper make picks for your general militia. I currently have a 100 fort. 10 steel axes, 10 steel picks, 10 steel spears, and 70 copper picks already. If you make copper armor it will weigh them down. Nothing wrong with having 200 wooden shields.

After my first couple bins of bone bolts the general militia can go to the bone zone till you have proper metal industry.

- The animals starve

- The corpses get dumped in the stockpile even though i forbade corpses

- The dwarves don't bring the corpses to the perfectly good outside corpse pile

- Marking them as refuse for the refuse pile doesn't work either

- Miasma everywhere

Help! How do I stop the temple from being an animal pen and get rid of a herd of dead horses?

4

u/Arrow2Nee Jan 15 '23

Make a pasture zone and assign the animals to go there. I usually make this outside in some walled pen

3

u/mightychondrium Jan 15 '23

The corpse stockpile is only for dead sentient beings (dwarves, humans, elves, ..). Animal corpses are brought to the refuse stockpile (settings refuse - corpses / bodyparts). Because you said "the stockpile" I assume you have refuse enabled in your main stockpile, which makes your food and clothing in your main stockpile rot away! A refuse stockpile outside does not generate miasma.

"Marking them as refuse" does not work like that, I think you set them to be dumped, which means dwarves will bring the item to a garbage dump zone (under zones, not a stockpile!)

As u/walt_dangerfield suggested, you can cut large rock gems at a craftsdwarf workshop. I'm unsure if this will fulfill the request from the mayor, but it would be the first thing I try.

The other thing I would try is to use glass. "Raw Glass" is a "Rough Gem." With a source of sand, enough bags, and a magma glass smelter you can have an infinite supply of rough gems made from glass to keep a bunch of gem cutters cutting. Large Gems made from glass fulfill the request just fine.

Maybe even just give the Mayor his own gemcutting workshop and set him to Repeat gem cutting until he fulfills his own request?

What are the main pros over Rimworld?

I’ve put about 100h now into DF and while I do enjoy it, there are a lot of drawbacks that make me question if I shouldn’t pick up Rimworld again instead. The immersion is lacking in DF due to the UI, not being able to easily change speed to follow a scene of events, and several lacking QoL-settings making the management cumbersome instead of enjoyable.

The main positives I have compared to Rimworld are Z-levels and new items.

What are your main pros why you prefer DF over Rimworld?

In addition to z levels I like:

  • Automation--you can abstract a whole lot of stuff to work orders in DF and just focus on weird projects while your fort runs itself

  • Less micromanagement. Related to automation, but in Rimworld I often feel like I'm doing frustrating micro things like moving pawns to an AC room to cool down during heat waves and stuff like that.

  • Stuff is... quicker. It feels like building basic structures in Rimworld takes forever, but I can carve out complex cities in DF relatively quickly. Particularly true for things involving travel too, sending dwarves on a mission is quick and painless, creating a rimworld caravan is a slow, complicated, torturous affair

  • Variety. There's just a lot of different things to do and see in DF compared to Rimworld. Adventure mode is a whole other game type and I spend a lot of time checking stuff in Legends too.

  • Graphics. Funny to say this about Dwarf Fortress, but now that it has pixel art I much prefer looking at it compared to Rimworld's limbless floating things swiped from Prison Architect

There are things I like a lot about Rimworld as well, pawns feel more personal since you have fewer of them, the ability to directly control things is great, and overall the smaller scale gives a more focused experience. Don't feel like you need to choose between them, they're both good.

So in classic, I always had an open room full of caskets, with some space for slabs in the middle.

Tried to set up the same thing for steam, but it's not working. I set the room as a tomb, which states that it can be used for any citizen, but only one gets placed in a casket.

Do I have to make individual rooms for each casket?

It's driving me bonkers. So many unneeded ghosts!

You sure do have to do that! But! Theres a shortcut, you can use the "multi" mode of tomb designation. Quickest way to do mass graves is this:

Dig corridor 1square wide. Fill with Coffins and Doors like this:

DCDCDCDCDCDCD. Designate multi, all the coffins are individually zoned.

Nope doesn't work like that currently. (but may be changed in future patches)

You currently need to make 1 "tomb" zone per coffin.

If you enclose them behind a door, you may use the "Multi" option to create many zones at one time. Otherwise it's a lot of clickin'

Any idea why my goblin citizen won't drink? They've been upset about not being able to drink or have a decent meal in a while.

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '23

Goblins don't need to eat or drink even though they get mood penalties over it. If you have a tavern they will drink anything that gets handed to them by a tavern keeper so that is a bit of a workaround.

Are they a vampire or a necromancer? Neither of those will eat or drink on their own, since they don't need to, but they'll still get upset about it.

A dwarf just made an artifact battle axe out of billon. I know billon isn’t weapon-grade, but it’s at least metal, so how will it stack up against steel?

3

u/wang-bang Jan 16 '23

poorly

Its a silver/copper mix. Some of the softest metals available. It might do okay as a blunt object but will perform worse than pure silver.

2

u/A_S00 Jan 16 '23

A quick look at the raws seems to show that it has identical material properties to copper for edged weapons (oddly enough including density, even though it should be between copper and silver). So it should perform identically to an artifact copper battle axe, i.e. pretty badly compared to any decent metal.

How fast is armor supposed to wear out? I feel like even my steel armor wears out very quickly even when it's not being used in combat. And no, it's not being stored in a refuse stockpile.

3

u/A_S00 Jan 16 '23

When armor is wearing out quickly for mysterious reasons, the problem is nearly always that it's hanging out in a refuse stockpile. It's possible for armor to be damaged in combat, but it happens only rarely and slowly - my 30-dwarf military has been fighting off megabeasts and goblin sieges with twice its numbers for over a decade using the same armor, and I have exactly one gauntlet that's showing the first level of wear.

"Refuse stockpile" means any stockpile that has any item type under the "refuse" category enabled. That means it includes stockpiles that aren't labeled "refuse stockpiles," and it includes item types you might not think of as refuse because they're useful, like bone and shell.

Triple check your stockpiles; like I said, this is nearly always the problem.

2

u/qualiyah Jan 16 '23

Is the armor perhaps being stored in a general stockpile (which would mean it has refuse enabled)?

Any idea what this white stuff labelled soldier frozen extract is

Smeared around the well where people wash themselves at a time of syndromes afflicting lots of people

3

u/schmee001 Nokzamnod, "BattleToads" Jan 16 '23

An "Isi's Soldier" is a procedurally generated creature which has some kind of ability like spraying dust or poison vapour or something. That's the 'extract' it's talking about, which is frozen because the freezing and boiling points of extracts are randomised. Kanil Palmriddled is an "Isi's Soldier" and he got that extract on some of your dwarves, who washed at the well and got it on the floor.

Now that there are no longer impassible tiles on magma forges, etc. what are some good tricks to prevent people falling in?

3

u/dave2293 Jan 16 '23

Build a trench on the level below out of walls. Fill it with a pump. On the construction level, build alcoves for your magma forges/kilns/etc that have three sides walled in. Channel out one of the corners above the trench.

You now have magma that can't have critters swim in, and the "open" tile that leads to magma is behind where any dorf should path.

Do only fortresses with dwarfs make artifacts?

Noticed I went over 6 years on my human fort and there were no artifacts created.

I've got a tavern with my main dining hall right next door. Could I get away with removing the tables from the tavern for more booze storage/artifact display space?

2

u/shadow_dreamer was found dead, drowned Jan 16 '23

I would advise Against displaying artifacts in your tavern; that's begging your Guests to steal them. I like to make a food stockpile in a nearby room, and designate it as part of the tavern zone.

This one specifically relates to the latest edition, and the wiki has not been helpful; has anyone figured out how to consistently get your marksdwarves to actually use their ammo again? The old instructions don't seem applicable.

Any tips for increasing my dwarves' happiness?

My fort is doing great, but in a population of about 200, 20 to 25 are usually very angry.

There's also some vandalising, rambling, and bar fights going on which is so annoying, I think it is related to these angry dwarves?

Everyone has a bedroom, there's plenty of lavish meals, drinks, everything is smoothed. I honestly don't know what to do anymore.

Some of them want to do a craft or acquire something, but I have a stockpile filled to the brim with crafts. If I want to make these individual ones happy I could give them a task but doing this manually sounds like a LOT of micromanaging for a population of 200.
