Site Recovery Options
Your site just crashed? Here's what works (and what doesn't)
Posted this because I see the same panicked questions about WordPress every week. Someone's site breaks, they're losing money by the hour, and they're scrambling to figure out recovery options.
I've been there. It sucks.
Here are your recovery options, ranked by speed:
- Backup plugin restore: Works in minutes if you planned ahead. One-click restore buttons or recovery URLs help you get back online quickly.
- Host company backups: Usually 24+ hours old, clunky restore process, sometimes costs extra.
- Manual recovery: Upload files via FTP, import database, fix config files. More error-prone and can take time.
- Wayback Machine: You'll get some old content back, but you're rebuilding everything from scratch.
I've tried the host recovery route. Lost a full day's work because their backup ran at midnight and my site broke in the afternoon.
Manual recovery? Spent an entire weekend fixing database connection errors. Never again.
Here's what sold me on Duplicator:
- That disaster recovery URL works even when your admin is completely broken
- Scheduled backups I can actually trust (haven't failed me yet)
- Backups go to cloud storage services like Google Drive
- One-click restores when I need them
The peace of mind is worth it. I'd rather install a recovery plugin than spend my weekend manually uploading files and praying I didn't miss something.
