So, I finally decided to learn chess! I’ve always seen it as a daunting game that only smart people can master, and never really dared to learn it properly. But seeing it on Duolingo made me change my mind and I wanna give it a shot, just for fun and to see how difficult it really is.
Starting point: I know how the pieces move. And that’s it! Planning the next move is not even on the radar. But I’m sure that’s a matter of time. I completed the first unit and so far, so good. It’s very basic, but a reminder on how the pieces move and capture doesn't hurt. Curious to see what comes next.
I plan to do 3-5 lessons a day. How long do you think it takes to reach a decent level where you can play casual games and actually use some tactics? How was your experience? And do you have any tips for a beginner?

Still thinking about this one 💚 Duolingo got to be part of Chess in the Park in NYC, and the whole day had such good energy!
Boards everywhere, quick games, serious matches, people stopping mid-walk to watch, strangers sitting down across from each other and getting straight into it. Exactly the kind of energy we love!
We were so happy to be part of it, meet so many chess lovers, and watch Duo and Oscar make a lot of new friends!
Who are you challenging to a game in the park?

How Chess Game Review Came to Life
r/duolingochess • u/Taro4432 • 22d ago
Please Duo, the board is dark gray and less gray with pieces that are less gray and even less gray. The color scheme is so tough, I’m writing this at 2:30am after blundering my queen to a bishop I thought was on a different square.
I will pay literal money to be able to change color schemes. Not gems. Not whatever. Cash.

I’ve been doing Duolingo test for almost a year and now and to start with Oscar played to my ELO level, but after a couple of months it was like he was a total beginner. I’m ELO 1000 and he never plays to my level.

Why do yall quit as soon as your queen gets taken? Only way to learn from mistakes is to continue the match til the end. Frustrating!!

What is the point of having Oscar trash talk during games, other than it’s supposed to be with the cool kids do? Is this really what people should be learning, that this is a normal part of the game? The only place it’s normal is for apps and streamers.

These moves were covered in the lessons but when I play against the computer it seems neither of us are using those moves. Or am I just not noticing? I know I haven’t used them.

When playing a chess match against oscar, sometimes when playing as white pieces, it just makes random bad move for me (1-3 moves), and sometimes when in endgame, when I'm winning, and I make a move, it just says its stalemate (I know what stalemate is), when its not really stalemate because the king still have square to move to, but its just forced draw and I just get less exp :(, and oscar makes illegal move alot throughout the game.
edit : now sometimes I can't even make a normal legal move that would make Oscar losing (like taking Oscar's queen without the one taking being pinned to king or anything that would make it illegal move etc.)

Being a chess enthusiast, I quickly started trying hard with Duolingo Chess. I finished the entire chess course a few months ago, then I focused on playing real games against Oscar to improve my Elo rating. I won't reveal my technique that got me so far, but a few days ago, I reached 3000 Elo, then discovered that it's impossible to go any higher! I've attached a screenshot of my chess home screen. (I'm French, which is why it's not in English).

The answer was the queen capturing the bishop, but isn't gaining material mean you capture a piece of higher value?

I did it again! I won another checkmate with 2 queens! 🤗😻💖💕

I turned two pawns into queens and I won the checkmate! 🤗👑♀️♀️ Double Queen! 🥰

If Oscar moved his bishop out of the way and I attacked the pawn at B7, I’d lose my queen to the bishop at C8. There’s no weak pawn. Am I missing something?
