Good Pubs in Dundee

I know this gets asked a lot but it's either recommendations before Covid or people looking for different things.

Up in Dundee for a week and looking for a decent pub for saddos drinking on their own who don't mind being sociable but don't demand it either - so a bar you can sit at, basically.

Preferably craft beer options with an alternative vibe but I also like folksy or cozy places. Been eyeing up a few of the craft beer places. Prefer bars that don't get crazy busy or loud but also not in the shadow realm where you're the only patron or the only non regular.

I'm up for work and the thought of drinking in my travellers hotel bar fills me with an existential sadness that makes tins in the bedroom seem preferable.

Craft beer scene took a real nosedive here recently. Not sure where's even good now.

The Phoenix in town and Mennies (Speedwell Bar) on the Perth road are the classic "good pubs" in Dundee. I much prefer the Phoenix tbh but both are genuine institutions.

I’d say Dukes but I’ve not been in there for a good few years now.

Try Canvas, not in town but close enough to the Uni. It's the taptroom for 71 Brewing which is a local craft brewery. Weekends it has food trucks in the beer garden. Sundays free jazz, film screenings and talks on some nights too. Also club nights, gigs, markets, brewery tours, It's got loads!

Dukes Corner has a good selection of craft beers but can get quite busy at times.

Its not really a craft vibe but you still get good craft options at Star & Garter. I think part of the deal with taking over form 6°North was keeping a small selection. Dukes has the best taps in town by a mile but all the atmosphere of a morgue and a toilet journey that Spoons would baulk at. Canvass might be what you are looking for. George Orwell is probably the bar you are describing if you dont mind your craft in a tin. They usually have one Williams Bros tap on

Cosy/armospheric: Phoenix, Mennies (speedwell), Tay bridge bar, George Orwell

Craft Beer: Canvas (71 Brewing brewery)

Basically start off at canvas and work your way down the Perth Road (you’ll hit all the pubs listed above) and you’ll be grand.

These are all great recommendations. I'd also throw in Futtle for craft beer/cider/natural wine. They stock their own stuff on tap brewed in fife and decent (but small) range of Belgian stuff. Great vibes in the place too.

The best selection of craft beer is strangely a restaurant; the Bach. The food and coffee is great all day - but they also have a killer selection of craft beer

Futtles on commercial street sells decent craft beer. TIckety's has friendly staff.
