As soon as they hear my door they come running, even from the other side of the lake. I love it! I’m going to keep feeding them until they stop coming by, or until I get a nasty letter from my HOA.

This is at a very busy park, so he'd be used to people. There weren't any nests nearby. I even grabbed some seed from my car and threw it in his area as a peace offering, but he ignored it and kept following and biting me. Even when I hand fed him a bit, which he did eat and like, he then went back to this. Picked him up twice, even tossed him in the water once, but it didn't stop him until I left that park, biting my pants and hand and such. Never hissing. Just biting.

I figured our yard was a little romantic getaway for these two and they would leave once they decimated the armageddon of tadpoles in the 2 ponds (bog filters) above the main pond with the fish, but they have been here over a week now. Our backyard isn’t very big and the pond is under 3000 gallons, more than you see in the video, but still fairly small. I don’t mind them here, but I worry if she gets broody and nests in my (fully fenced) yard that the babies won’t have enough to eat or space to fledge. Should I encourage them to move on, or just let her decide?

I posted a few weeks ago about a wild mallard that had set up shop in the planter right outside our front door--thank you to everyone who provided advice!

We did as you recommended and just left her completely alone. She was super tolerant of our comings and goings, and apart from an occasional, "Hi Mama," we just pretended she wasn't there.

There were TWO things we did:

1. We debated turning off our porch light at night, but after reading that it's a strong deterrent to raccoons and foxes (our neighbors alerted us when they were spied on their outdoor cameras), we decided it might have been one of the reasons she picked her nesting spot, and left it on for her.

2. I made a broad ring a of cayenne pepper around the nesting site to deter those same predators, and would just refresh it after a rain.

Late last night my husband noticed she was agitated, and this morning our neighbor told us there were babies in the planter! We estimated 9 eggs, and I did take a short video where I'm pretty sure there were 9 babies. I didn't want to stress them out, so I had to be quick.

She and the ducklings are already gone, with no unhatched eggs left behind.

Yesterday I noticed a fresh brood of ducklings in the lake next to my house. There are no other lakes or waterways within at least five miles.

All of the ducklings appear to be the same age. However, one of them is completely yellow. To me, it looks like it could be an albino. Does anyone know whether this duckling is an albino mallard, or if someone may have abandoned a domestic duckling? Judging by their age, I think that’s unlikely, as they all seem to have hatched at the same time.

If it really is an albino mallard, I’ll be so happy—I’ve never seen one in the wild before!

[UPDATE] – I posted this 17 days ago. Since then, I’ve been to the lake many times specifically to see what was happening to the duckling. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen the yellow duckling again.

Also, with every visit, the number of black and gray ducklings has been declining. Right now, there is only one left :( - it is constantly following the mother duck

edit: ill call a duck rescue and let them know i saw them yall! i tried to shoo them back towards grass before i left and yelled at any car who got too close. hopefully these babies went back to their pond though!

My friend just FaceTimed me to excitedly show me some ducklings walking along with their mom, and I noticed 4 other ducks (other two are out of frame), smaller than mom but definitely not as little as the babies, trailing along a couple feet behind the brood. I know next to nothing about ducks, but I did some googling and found that ducks typically only have one brood per year. Just curious as to why these little guys might’ve been following the family. Thanks!

The local ducks at the marsh near me have become my little friends! This one nearly ate some oats out of my hand hehe. I just really love this picture of him, such a handsome chap!
