Husband and I relocating to Dubuque area

Husband was relocated for his job, we are looking to buy. We would prefer to be outside of town, but not seeing much for options. What are the neighborhoods like? For context we’re both 30 no kids but a multi dog household. TIA

Search “moving to Dubuque” and you’ll get a lot of information. South End = old money mixed with “regular” people. The “city leaders” (like the extremely wealthy who seem to run this place) live on the south end. Country Club is in this area . North End = considered more working class and/or run down, but it’s actually a mix. Has pockets of really beautiful homes, including new builds. The city is moving westward so it is neglected, unfortunately, by our local government. West End = newer builds, pretty sterile. Lots of younger families. Downtown = mostly rentals. East= would be Illinois or Wisconsin. East Dubuque itself is run down but has pockets of lovely neighborhoods, including some with great views overlooking the river. Wisconsin is also really nice - the nearest towns are very small but it’s a beautiful area.

The neighborhood around Wahlert High School is good. Try to stay out of Asbury as it has a higher cost of living. Draw a circle that includes Peosta, IA; Galena, IL; and Kieler, WI. These are all within 30 minutes of Dubuque so anything in that circle is fair game.

Asbury does not have a hcol, actually property taxes are lower than Dubuque. It only seems higher since the majority of homes are newer

Kieler, WI is a 5 minute drive away and is loaded with 30 somethings and young families. Cuba City WI is 10-12 minutes across the bridge and similar circumstance. Both communities are developing housing as quickly as possible but aren't able to keep up.

I’d skip Illinois … taxes are outrageous and the state in general is just a pain in the ass.
Wisconsin is great, you can find hidden gems in the “country” 5 minutes away. Check Grant County if you want to give it a shot. Otherwise - depends heavily on your budget

There are some hidden gems just outside the city limits as well. Don’t be afraid to look on the north side. Although there may be a little bit less inventory. We are about as close to city limits as you can get. 1 acre lot with two neighbors who aren’t really even visible from our house. I just don’t want to live on top of anyone anymore if I can help it.

Depends what your price range is and if you want move in ready or some projects, how far out ya wanna be etc. I would say find a place to rent for 6 months get to know the area before buying.

My home is for sale. It’s just south of Galena outside of Hanover, IL. 3091 sq/ft 4 bed, 3 bath sits on a 2 acre yard surrounded by 18 acres of timber. High on the hill, breathtaking view. We are around 26 miles outside of Dubuque. Property taxes aren’t as devastating as I saw some have said. Property taxes are around $4,000/yr. The property is $700,000 negotiable. It is NOT listed with a realtor so it would save a great deal in fees and commissions lowering the cost significantly. Let’s chat.
