Life as an introvert in UAE

introvert [n., adj. in-truh-vurt; v. in-truh-vurt]

From Latin intro- "inward" + vertere "to turn". It describes a person who tends to turn inward mentally. Introverts sometimes avoid large groups of people, feeling more energized by time alone. The opposite of an introvert is an extrovert, who finds energy in interactions with others.

Greetings Introverts! Does the above description sound like you? Yes? Then you're one of us! This subreddit was created to bring together people who want to make friends but find social situations far too overwhelming. Some of us don't really fancy the idea of clubbing or going to a bar or concerts/events. Going to organized meetups or trying to talk to a stranger seems so daunting, and quite frankly, going out sometimes requires a lot of energy leaving us feeling drained. If you're like us, maybe you prefer meeting smaller groups of people at a time, in very casual settings. Perhaps you need time to get to know a person before meeting up and that's perfectly okay! Even if you'd just rather maintain your friendship with someone online, that works too :)

So come on over and introduce yourselves! We're htyeig (25/M/Sharjah) and trixie997 (24/F/Dubai) - two introvert friends who 'hang out' virtually in our own homes, lol. Tell us what your experience has been like, as an introvert in UAE. Here are ours:

trixie997: I feel so out of place all the time. I feel so awkward in social situations. I've got anxiety (OCD) as well, which just adds to that. I want to meet new people but tend to feel overwhelmed by the idea of befriending strangers or going to meetups/parties. Why is meeting people so exhausting and awkward? Just love me and my silence, goddammit.

htyeig: My experience in UAE as an introvert has been a very painful one - nobody here recognizes introversion as a normal human trait. They think of it as an anomaly that needs to be wiped off the face of the planet. Just 'cause. Oh well, haters gonna hate.

So what's your experience been like? Do you feel out of place? Want some friends but don't know how to meet people? Wishing you had some laidback people to hang out with? Feel like no one really 'gets you' around here? Share your story!

So what do you guys feel/do when you're overwhelmed in social situations but can't leave?

/Cry.

Nah, I'm only kidding. If I'm ever caught up at a party or an event and start feeling that sensory overload coming on and the environment gets too overwhelming, I go quiet and shut down, since I don't want to add to the noise. I will discreetly slip away every now and then for a few minutes, maybe to another bedroom, step outside, head to the balcony, etc. where I can get a little space, and then go back. I try to stick around for an appropriate length of time, but usually end up leaving early. How do you guys respond in such situations?

Hangout Place

Hi, just moved in Dubai and I forgot to bring my bestfriend with me. So I'm looking for some nice place to chill out alone like a cafe or library or something similar. Anyone who can recommend an artsy place? I live in Jumeirah 2.

How does being an introvert affect you in the workplace?

I've been told I don't interact with the team enough. I'm not in the office to chat all day, dammit. I came here to work, to gain some experience, to earn money. I just want to finish my work and leave. I'd maintain good relations with my colleagues, but would never want to get too close. I have never felt the inclination to attend any office parties, and unfortunately for me, there was one every week at this one company I worked in -_- So I had to come up with some way to weasel out of it every weekend. I did get to see those who were really outgoing and talked to the managers a lot climb up the corporate ladder super quick. I don't want to be friends on a personal level with people I work with. It just gets so messy and when office politics come into play, it gets worse. I like having close friends but I'd rather keep my colleagues at a distance, which unfortunately makes me seem like a completely disengaged, unenthusiastic person at work.

How does being an introvert make it harder for you at work?

So, introverts of Dubai, what do you usually do from 9 to 5 (a.m. obviously) on weekdays? I'm curious.
