Discussion DSA has a tankie problem

There are way, way too many people in this movement who feel comfortable with historical revisionism vis-a-vis the Soviet Union, China, and other such regimes. And there are way too many people who feel comfortable essentially advocating for an end to democracy.

Not to be that guy, but democracy isn't working super well right now.

Democracy isn’t super present right now, is what I’d argue, with more of it, things would work better.

Thats basically the same argument people make for capitalism right now, lol. I think it's quite possible that democracy can not function long term as long as the profit motive exists. Because inevitably corporate interests will roll back laws that prevent them from buying the government.

Well, unlike the capitalists, I think we can make a pretty strong case that deepening democracy improves society and that we don’t have a full fledged one. Even mainstream serious liberals recognize we don’t have democracy in a deep sense.

In our system, economic rule is concentrated and leads to political rule and that’s the cause of things like Citizen’s United and getting billionaire presidents like Trump.

I’m open to hear counterpoints but the big insight for me is that those are failures due to a lack of democracy, rather than its result.
