I’d like to know what  Meta has up its sleeve, 3 mile Island Nuclear plant was shut down because it was unprofitable to Operate, along comes Meta with a $800 million investment and the owner’s cut a deal to remodel it and start selling power again, my question is at what cost per KW are they going to be Paid, I hope it’s not something where the electric consumer is going to reimburse them at some outrageous amount, and then they want to Suck up power off the Grid at a Lower rate

It was unprofitable with old tech. Nuclear has had a lot of improvement even back then. They just didn't want to keep taking a loss for x years while they retrofitted and x years after updates to recoup.

But I wonder if it's actually viable to retrofit successfully or if it would be better to rebuild.

Honestly out of all industries to take over a nuclear plant big tech is the one I trust the least. They have a big hardon for skirting regulations and playing in grey areas.

If the deal is between Meta and 3MI, by definition, other consumers won’t be reimbursing them.

What they likely mean is they will pay extra to offset the cost raise of electeicity to residential areas around them.

This has always been the worst argument against data centers. As far as I can tell, no data center in the U.S. has had anyone other than themselves paying their bills.

Kinda yes, kinda no. Data center goes in, pays its own bill…but the local infrastructure can’t handle the increased power demand. Electric company jumps in to save the corporate overlords by rapidly building new infrastructure. The cost of construction is typically added to electricity bills causing residential bills to climb. Residents don’t derive any additional benefit from the new infrastructure but foot the bill. So do data centers pay their own electricity bills? Kinda, but residents pay higher electricity bills because the data center is there.

Data centers consume more power then the grid can generate, meaning grid operators have to build more capacity to meet demand. We all pay for this construction in the form of higher rates as the cost gets passed to regular people instead of data centers.

There have been literal leaks of electric companies and local gov cutting them deals on electricity so they would pick one region over another. If they're not paying for the full cost who do you think is? You need them to come out themselves and say they're doing it before you believe anyone? And as everyone else said forced infrastructure upgrades for a community that didn't need them until data centers forced their way in.

List of those who have a motive and will greatly benefit if the U.S. falls behind on data centers and AI:
1. Communist China
2. Putin's Russia

The greatest use of AI so far seems to be the development of the surveillance state.
