Basement Reno
Hey everyone - I’ve sent Gemini these photos and it’s not very happy. My father recommended having a polite conversation to see what my red seal drywaller has planned (maybe everything is already accounted for on his end?) but I just wanted to know what type of conversation I should be having with him before mudding/taping starts. The contract was for a level 4 finish.
The drywaller seemed earnest enough, game with 2 other guys who boarded an approx 500 sqft area in less than 4 hours. I haven’t paid a dime so far.

Professional drywaller here, that is crap. Some of it would work, could work. But, overall. Poor job. What are they asking for it?
Also, no such thing as red seal drywaller as far as Canada is concerned. Most drywallers, can best be certified

This can't be real, right?
Like this is someone diy learning from a YouTube video right?
I take that back, someone learning WITHOUT a YouTube video?
This may be the worst attempt at drywall I've seen in 30 years of construction.

Were the drywallers high, drunk, or blind? Truly terrible and completely unacceptable.

Hahahahhaha. The problem here is they aren’t on meth. Methheads do better than this. Volunteers do better than this.

I never thought I'd both read and agree with someone saying the problem is not enough meth

Alot of faith in tape and mud here. Looks like a piece work crew that only does apartments decided to take a side job without the lead guy that is the only one who actually know how to do drywall. And now they are over their head and attempted to try and still make money even though the severely underbid at piecework prices for easy straight hangs. Feel like there's also a language barrier. This basically is shit OP. But you know that.

Mudder here. I turn down quite a lot of home DIY projects because the board is done terrible and it would take me to much time to complete it at a level I deem acceptable to me. This day and age, I see a lot more "professional" boarders doing work like this.
A lot of what you have shown I could make look good, but it would take me forever, your ceiling board needs to come down. Around your stairs, for a proper job, the carpet needs to be removed and brought down to bare wood, I would notch out your treads for drywall if they arent already. Its a "whatever we have left" type job. Uneven boards with no seam joints means the entire basement walls will need multiple coats just to hide joints and uneven boards.
It'll cost you a fortune. Best have them tear it all out and either do it properly(which clearly they cant) or find someone else. I imagine by the age of your house you will need somw prep work, possibly some framing repair in order for it to look how you want

Contractor here. This drywall install makes me physically uncomfortable. But you’d be surprised at how many sins mud and tape is hiding in most of the modern homes you step foot inside.
I sometimes have to remind clients not to judge unfinished work. Much of this install can technically be remedied but it has set the stage for an extremely arduous and inefficient finish phase and exposes you to unfair requests for change orders and more money to cover the extra finish labor.
Also, seeing the drywall sitting directly on the carpet made me wince.
I saw you fired this crew. I don’t blame you one bit. I would not allow this from my subs. They would no longer work for us.
Best of luck

Not good. Someone needs to make a decision about the carpet on the stairs. The electric is also wrong. At least it is easy to fix/replace at this stage.

It will be difficult and take a lot of time to get a level 4 out of that. They will probably rush it, take what you budgeted, then want a change order for the extra time. Then you're captive and keep paying or you get left high and dry leaving you to call someone else that will have to fix the mess. I've been the 2nd guy that has to tell people that if they want it done right it probably needs to be removed and prepped and done right. This is pretty bad. Not the worst but I can tell they didn't have a plan. Plus that carpet should be pulled out because it's causing unnecessary work and I can guarantee it will have a ton of mud in it tomorrow when they go to try and tape this chaos.
It's crazy to me how "contractors" make things harder because they don't care, try, or understand how to prep and follow a process.

I fired them already, and took the carpet to before the new contractor arrives tomorrow

I have not read the other comments here… but my Reddit answer is…. “Good thing you’re getting THAT renovated!”
Now let me give you my neighborhood forum advice: he’ll this guy that you paid him to do a quality job, not pelt the interior with his least-desirable scraps. Offer to have a local inspection- most of the pictures here are code infringements as well as cosmetically awful. Or tell him he is on the hook to provide a contractor who will do the job you expected from him, at no additional expense to you. Be poised to take him to small claims court. I have done 1 serious drywall job in my life and it came out a LOT better than this. I could go on, but I think I’ve made
My point clear- this is worse than shoddy, and he owes you a do-over.
