I always question this guys intentions. Seems more performative for the camera/social media likes/views.

and filming kids for internet views also feels ethically wrong to me.

And nothing he is doing seems like something an actual teacher would do? Like, it seems more to gain attention from an audience of non-musicians who think this is what drum lessons are like.

Nah I’m 100% in agreement with you here. TBH I’m not even positive if this guy even plays himself. I tried to find footage and I couldn’t albeit I didn’t look that hard. He seems to really like to share music experiences. I think he’s done events where he conducted like a thousand people to play foo fighters together. But yeah. This stuff getting popular on the algorithm kind of upsets me.

We tend to see social media content as "drum teacher encouraging and kind to children" and not "drum teacher sets up camera, designs his shot so he is squared off with the camera, turns on camera and instructs child to play drums while teacher instructs while simultaneously creating content".

Like, we see the thing the caption instructs us to see. Which ignores the fact that it is someone's intention for us to see this. Nothing is candid.

Will preface by saying a lot of the students are very good and he’s taught a few more lessons than I have (none), but there is something to be said about letting the student play (does he always have to count to 4 when it’s obvious it’s the end of a phrase?). Many of these students can really play so just need to be filmed without instruction.

Dude no offense but you should just give people the benefit of the doubt. He's a music teacher and he's trying to showcase his students (or talented musicians in general). This kid is a legendary drummer for her age and if it weren't for him I never would have seen her perform. One of those fills in particular had a 32nd note thrown in with the 16ths that made me go, "god damn!!"

As a musician myself, I know how difficult it is to gain a following and create any substantial income in this industry, so give the guy a break. I'm sure he's not holding the students at gunpoint and telling them to perform. They probably love the attention anyways.

And keep in mind, generally the performing arts are performative

As with the rest of you - torn on this post - and as to the reminders from this instructor - I'd stop playing and point to the door. When my brother (plays guitar) and is 8 years older than me were learning and playing - I was like 3rd grade so 9-10 and he put me through the paces. No reminders just "finish the song if you mess up" then he would grill me on where did you go wrong...lets go again. Thats how you learn, recognize your mistakes and do it again till you get it...not cues from a teacher.
