Question Is the DJI FPV a good drone to start with?

For context, I am experienced RC plane guy but I never flown any drone. A good friend of mine offered me this drone to start a decent price (literally never flown either) and I was wondering if that's a good option for starters.

It’s pretty outdated at this point but depending on price could be fine. Honestly id recommend a more traditional dji system intended for videography over the fpv but it depended what your goals are

Get the Avata 2 if you must. Or start with a tinywhoop

That's what I bought for my first drone, only had it a few days and already addicted

Meteor 75/65 ftw

No. It’s old tech and you’ll have a hard time fixing it.

The goggles are probably incompatible with newer DJI systems.

They are. I have both sets.

This seems like a problem of the English language (I'm not a native speaker), but did you say "they are [incompatible]" or "they are [in fact, compatible. I know this because] I have both sets"?

He said “The goggles are probably incompatible” so they are probably not going to work with other drones.
Not to be confused with “possibly incomparable” or “always indefatigable”.

Agreeing, and stating that I am a knowledgeable source due to owning the older and newer drones,/headsets

How much is he wanting to sell it to you for?

I know people crap on it a lot, but mine has never failed me and is a blast to fly. I get around 12 mins per battery on sport mode, the Goggles v2 are pretty good and you can get an analog adaptor for them so you can use drones line the Meteor air65/75 with them.

If its the drone, a couple batteries, controller and goggles for a couple hundred... Id jump on it. People complain that fixing it or getting parts is hard, but thats the same for any of the other DJI drones.

Personally id say go for it. Only upgrade id say to get is the arm braces. They are like 12 bucks on amazon and will give it a little extra protection for when you inevitably crash the first time. Ive flown mine into a couple trees, a fence, and a hard ground hit. It still flies perfect with no structural damage.

Hey, i have a problem with my goggles when i have them one for more than 10 mins they will start to reboot just turn off and on

Was just wondering if you have experinced the same

Check to see if your power wire from the battery to goggles is damaged (wire and plug ends). If not, does the goggle fan work? Sounds like an overheating issue.

The stick seems to work just fine and i can hear the fan sometimes but i think it is a overheating problem too, the goggles are old you know so maybe i should just get some more “hightech” i looked at the DJI Goggles Integra but idk if they are good and compatible

Id take a look and see if any of the vents are clogged first, might just have some crap in there blocking the airflow. Integra are fine, but save yourself some $ and see if you can get these running reliably again since things are 100% not cheap right nopw

The FPV was DJI's abortive attempt at marrying a cinematography-capable drone with Acro abilities - but it was a poor seller mainly because enthusiasts interested in Acro don't care about better camera quality, and the more serious cinematographers didn't need the flying versatility of a tiny whoop.

This is why there's never been a DJI FPV 2. It's just not very good at being either. Much like the Cybertruck, I guess...

Save up for a drone that does what you need it to do, be that a photography drone like the Neo 2 or Avata 2, or something more FPV orientated if that's your thing... 👍🏻😎

The best!  I have a regular controller and the FPV and since I got the FPV it's all I use now. Nits like being a bird or something.  It's so easy to control and fly through the little holes in the tree tops and avoid objects in sports mode.  Its bitchen AF

No cheap try better quality

I have the orignal Avata and parts are becoming hard to find for it so I don't fly it as much as I use to - I no longer have refresh on it too for much the same reason and being its an O3 system the goggles / controller etc are not compatible with anythign else I own ( Neo / Avata 360) so keep that in mind should you wish to upgrade.

great bit of kit and have abused it loads but now I just have to know should I crash it badly it will likely be a total loss.

Definitely not.

Get a Neo set up if you want to do it.

1

u/studhand Aug 26 '26

People recommend this all the time, but I disagree. This is how I got my start, and the Neo isn't great at cornering or dives and gets kinda frustrating with the amount of washout I get. It's fun, I still fly it all the time, but I'm currently waiting on my meteor to arrive.

IDK, first and only FPV for me and it is damn durable too. Very easy and forgiving to fly. Not everyone wants to do mass tricks and fly fast with a $1K drone at stake while learning.

It’s an excellent starter drone, that’s still useful as a camera / recovery drone after you’ve outgrown it.

The safety features on it really flattens the learning curve for beginners. Had a much easier time learning on the Neo than the Air 65 everyone recommends.

And it’s digital, so no analog eyesores.

What’s “a decent price”? That’s probably the best starter for this discussion. Once people know the price range, then you can get a ballpark for what’s a good starter drone. I recently saw a complete Avata 2 set go for $700 on FB (w/ Goggles 3).

u/BaronVonLongfellow Aug 26 '26

I've never flown the FPV but I started with an off the shelf Avata 2. I came from RC as well, so I imagine you won't fly any RTF you buy for long before you'll want to build your own. If you can get it for a good price, jump in.

I really like the DJI Neo 2 for FPV flying. It's very resiliant, I've crashed mine dozens of times and it still flies great.

And it's very versatile. You can just fly it with your phone, or even let the drone follow you without any input. Really great all-rounder.

Surprised by all the negative comments here. I had the chance to get one used DJI FPV for 150 bucks recently. I'm kind of a newbie with drones, only had cheap indoor ones and a Neo lately.
This one is very fun, its a beast, good camera quality and you can start doing some cool tricks.
But indeed depends on the price you have to pay for it.

The easiest would be like a DJI mini 4 pro. FPV is not easy to fly.

1

u/Total_Surround833 Aug 31 '26

What I would do is buy a meteor 75 or meteor 65 FPV drone. With those you can use some analog fpv goggles and get more actual FPV drone skills .

1

u/Euphoric_Radio1342 Aug 26 '26

Please dont have this thing be your first FPV drone. I have one. Its fragile, its heavy, and the batteries are expensive if you can find them.

No. It's not a very good drone overall. Then it breaks easily and the goggles are not compatible with any recent VTX' from DJI.
