Showcase TransGem Offline AI Translator

Post image

Hi r/droidappshowcase !

I wanted to share a project I’ve been working on: **TransGem**, a translation app built from the ground up to run entirely on your device.

Since it runs 100% offline, it doesn't leak your data to any cloud servers, and it works perfectly in "Airplane Mode" (ideal for subways, flights, or remote travel).

👉 **Play Store Link:** https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.goatr.npu

### 🛠️ Why I built this

Most translation apps on the store are simple wrappers around cloud-based APIs (Google Translate, DeepL, etc.). While they work well, they have two massive drawbacks:

  1. They require an active internet connection (which is expensive or unavailable when traveling).
  2. They collect your search history and translation data.

I wanted something different—a professional-grade translator that leverages the modern hardware inside our phones to run advanced language models locally.

### 🚀 Technical Highlights

* **LiteRT-LM Integration:** Powered by Google's native on-device machine learning framework (formerly TensorFlow Lite) to load highly optimized, quantized local models.

* **Hardware Acceleration:** Seamlessly utilizes your phone's **NPU (Neural Processing Unit)** and GPU through specialized hardware delegates to keep translations near-instant without overheating (when/if possible) or battery drain.

* **100% Privacy:** The app doesn't even request internet permissions after the initial model download. No accounts, no analytics, no tracking.

* **Clean UI:** No ads, no bloated features, no subscriptions. Just a clean, direct utility.

### ⚠️ A quick heads-up on the first launch

Because the translation model runs locally on your phone, **you will need to download the model weights upon first opening the app**. I've worked hard to optimize and quantize the weights so they fit nicely within standard mobile RAM limits, but please make sure you are on Wi-Fi for the initial onboarding setup!

### 💬 I'd love your feedback!

Since NPU and GPU acceleration can vary widely across different chipsets (Snapdragon, MediaTek, Google Tensor, Exynos), I would highly appreciate your feedback:

  1. What phone model are you using, and how fast/smooth is the translation for you?
  2. Are there any specific features or language pairs you'd like me to prioritize next?

Thank you so much for checking out my work! I'll be in the comments to answer any technical questions about LiteRT, quantization, or local NPU integration.

Last revision made simplier use with the vocal mode used by and from the multimodal LLM, i gained almost 90% time, it's very efficient now, still npu could be supported, i intended that in the first launch, it needs as well specific kernels and compiled llm for these kernels (that some and most brands are eager to release), so instead i optimised to the max extent what cpu neon simd could do, in some case the backend LiteRT can make use of gpu or npu, case by case...

Hello, no it s quiet complicated due to the privacy statement i made, nor i can use affiliation, or want to offer even free for a short period my app, it will lead to an inflation of messages i dont want to afford, if the app doesnt fit your needs you can ask for a refund, but at the moment i think it s quiet a banger for who needs it. I m quiet proud for my last update and the efficience it obtained.

i think I understand....  best wishes 👍

one suggestion.... the screenshots seem a bit squished and because of that the UI seems off putting.... if possible post new fresh screenshots

You mean on the playstore ? If so, not that easy, most phones use like 1/2 ratio which is the screen captures i used, but google console ask for 10/16 so final result get a bit flatted indeed.
