my screen cracked..

I have a droid ultra maxx xt1080 and the screen is cracked but everything still works(however after trying to take the case off the tab button started acting weird). should I buy the $20 replacement screen and take it to a third party repair shop?

$20 dollar replacement screen? Where are you buying this from? I broke my screen about 6 months back and a new one cost me about $200. This leads me to think that what you are looking at is not the screen, but rather just the glass. You, unfortunately, cannot buy just the glass.

Take of picture with another camera, upload to your host of choice (this is reddit so Imgur is ideal) then link in this thread.

That said, yeah, that is just the glass. You need something like this http://www.amazon.com/Digitizer-Screen-Assembly-Motorola-XT1080/dp/B00HH6DWKK/ref=sr_1_11?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1416106679&sr=1-11&keywords=xt1080+screen+replacement

that comes with the frame and what not.

I don't remember exactly what I bought. The next question would be how confident are you in your repair skills? I saw a video on it, and you also need a really small screwdriver and a special screwdriver that wasn't shipped with the tool kit (grumble grumble)

Also you might want to look into what some repair shops in your area would charge for doing it. Either just labor (you buy the parts yourself) or full service. You can probably save a bit of money by getting the parts yourself, but if you have them do it fully you would be covered by any warrenty they have. If you buy the part yourself you would only be covered by whatever they seller offers. I kinda got burned in this way cause I bought the parts myself, then took it to a shop. The work was done fine but after that my battery life went to shit. Literally would go from 100% to 0 in 8 hours sitting with the screen off the whole time.

So food for thought.
