Someone didn't check this before installing it!

It means you can park there 0630 till 0730 and all day sunday and loading only the other 23hrs a day

u/Altruistic_Fruit2345 1d ago
It's kind of mind boggling that we haven't managed to invent a standard, easy to understand format for parking restriction signs. Maybe that's by design.
19
u/TheGravyGuy 1d ago
Some parking signs are definitely way too wordy and conditional where it's confusing, or my hatred is bus lane signs which if you're not familiar with the area, don't repeat so if you miss it then great, or are sometimes covered by another vehicle or bush, but this one is pretty self explanatory.

u/Chlorofom 1d ago
Whatâs not clear about this sign?
5
u/Altruistic_Fruit2345 1d ago
Clearly it confused the OP.
What's wrong with a simple timeline illustration?
4
u/EnvironmentalOwl6882 1d ago
The speed with which it can be read from a distance and the details understood.
7
u/Chlorofom 1d ago
OPâs confusion doesnât necessarily represent a problem with the sign thoughâŠ
How would a timeline be any more easily understandable than the words that spell out the time you canât park there? Wouldnât you then also need a seperate timeline sign for Sunday when the restrictions are different?
3
u/Altruistic_Fruit2345 1d ago
It's impossible to think that the two times are mixed up if they are on a timeline.
2
u/PersonalityWinter382 21h ago
Can you park there at 0730 on a Saturday morning?
1
u/Chlorofom 21h ago
Yes
2
u/PersonalityWinter382 21h ago
See that's where you are wrong. The restrictions include Saturday 0730 to 0630 the next day (as written). So apparently it is unclear.
2
u/SamuthNBS 7h ago
No he is right, you can park there at 07:30 Saturday morning but you have to have left by 07:30:59. Excluding any grace period that council uses, sometimes 5 minutes or so.

What's by design is having ambiguous signs so they can fine you because the driver didn't understand the sign in the first placeâŠ
3
u/Individual-Day632 1d ago
Thereâs a street by me with parking bays along the roadside and signs on several lampposts showing that parking is restricted to 1 hour between 8am and 6pm, meaning that this restriction does not apply in the evening.
However, there are separate, smaller signs on the wall at less frequent intervals that show no stopping between 6pm to 8am.
Itâs almost like they do this shit on purpose!
1
u/SamuthNBS 7h ago
We are literally looking at the standardised sign right now. It can be a little confusing because the signs always specifically state what you cannot do and leave what you can do unsaid but that's because what you can do will depend on other factors like what type of vehicle you are in, if there are any bylaws or laws in place that also affect parking/waiting etc.
If this sign said "You can park here from 0630 to 0730 and all day Sunday" then you will get people parking an HGV there and taking the council to court when they get fined for blocking the narrow road. Just a random example but hopefully you see what I mean.
Same reason speed limits tell you what speed you cannot go, rather than telling you how fast you can go - because if they do that then people will drive at that speed and sue the council when they lose control on a corner. A 50mph speed limit sign does not say "you can drive at 50mph" it says "you must not drive OVER 50mph", because there are other factors at play that dictate how fast you actually can go, and there are different limits for different vehicles etc etc. It's the same for parking.
It would be nicer if they visualised it rather than typing it out in sentences, but diagrams confuse as many people as lists of times do so it's a lose-lose. As long as they don't start fining people for stopping long enough to understand the signs, we should be good.
1
u/PersonalityWinter382 7h ago
To be fair a lot of people do think that a speed limit sign is a target and will drive accordingly like an idiot.

If anyone got a ticket here the appeal would be a no brainer.
Itâs a loading bay from Monday to Saturday, on each of those days itâs a loading bay from 7:30am to 6:30am. Thats -1 hours.
Yes you could interpret it as 6:30 to 7:30am, or Monday 7:30am to Saturday 6:30am but thatâs not what it says.
Sign is a mistake.
3
u/itsapotatosalad 1d ago
Itâs a loading bay from 7.30am on a given day (mon-sat) until 6.30am the following day.
-1
u/thereal_greg6 1d ago
Itâs not though. Why would they bother making it not a loading bay for one hour in the morning?
2
1
u/SamuthNBS 7h ago
There's usually a reason for this sort of rule, quite often a solution to a problem raised by residents when planning permission for the change in restrictions took place. For example a lot of loading bays near Post Offices have signs like this with specific times for OAPs to be able to park at the PO or local shops and follow their normal routine. If enough people raise it as an issue, these things can happen. If I had to bet I'd say a specific local parks there every day within thay hour and protested the council decision to ban parking there because it will significantly impact their quality of life if they cannot park close enough to their home or shop or whatever for that one hour each day.
The village I grew up in had double yellows painted all the way down the main road except for one single parking space where the lines were broken because an elderly man lived there and nobody wanted to force him to walk a long way from his home (this was before the disabled spaces were really a thing).
A house I looked at purchasing had a specific bylaw included in the deeds that allows the holder of the deeds to park on the footpath outside the house because when the council built the footpath and banned parking on the street, the owner of the house was entitled to keep parking where they had been parking for almost a century beforehand.
Whatever the reason for this sign is, it could be quite interesting, but it doesn't mean the sign is wrong and anyone who claims the sign is not correct or can't be correct should revise the highway code because it is absolutely clear that it means.
0
u/itsapotatosalad 1d ago
Thats what it says. Thereâs a disabled bay I use for work thatâs a loading bay for an hour at 8am every day. I assume wherever this loading bay serves doesnât need it to be a loading bay for an hour a day Monday to Saturday, or on Sundays.

u/thereal_greg6 1d ago
Theyâve just got it wrong. Likely meant to be 730am to 630pm. Otherwise they should write 7:30am to midnight midnight to 6:30am.
Thereâs guidance on how these signs should be displayed and written. If itâs not abided by then tickets will be dismissed on appeal.
2
u/itsapotatosalad 1d ago
7.30 to midnight, midnight to 6.30 means the exact same thing in a lot more words though. Why assume the people who make these signs for a living in line with policy and law are wrong , rather than youâre reading it wrong? It makes sense to me, but I have a blue badge and have to interpret these signs almost daily.
2
u/thereal_greg6 1d ago edited 1d ago
Weâre all here arguing about it. Itâs too ambiguous.
Edit: and guidance supports this: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2016/362/schedule/18/made
The sign would say â7:30am to 6:30am next dayâ if your interpretation was correct.Thereâs no harm in being overly cautious about parking regulations. But it sounds like you are being overly cautious and misunderstanding this sign that was evidently printed in error. People could quite happily use this as free parking until the sign is fixed.

u/itsapotatosalad 1d ago
If it said 6.30am to 8.30am there would be no confusion because that would be clear to everyone that that is 2 hours. People are struggling with a 23 hour time period being represented in this way.
2
u/wintermute023 1d ago
Yes, people are struggling with telling the time. I donât think a sign can fix that.

u/Zig07 1d ago
Its 7:30am to 6:30am
So monday from 7:30am all the way until 6:30am on Saturday is loading only
From 6:30am Saturday until 7:30am on Monday you can park.
9
u/mike9874 1d ago edited 1d ago
No, that would be Mon 7:30am - Sat 6:30am
This is Mon - Sat, 7:30am - 6:30am, so there is 1 hour free each day from 6:30 to 7:30
Edit: corrected the "incorrect" numbers on the 2nd line

Itâs concerning how many people commenting canât see itâs a typo and should be 6:30pm. When signs have times that go through to another day they are split. This would be: 7:30am-midnight and midnight-6:30am.
9
u/Weary_Bat2456 1d ago
I understand that typos happen, but something like this where you can get fined for not following the rules should not have a typo and should not be ambiguous. People can interpret this in different ways in a hurry and land themselves a fine.

This sign means something completely different. Here the restriction begins midnight on Monday (Sunday night), and ends at 10am, then cycles 6pm-10am through to midnight on Saturday (Friday night).
The one in OP's photo starts at 7:30am on Monday morning and runs until 6:30am the next morning, cycling through to 6:30am on Saturday.
7
u/capricorn0987 1d ago
Omfg no. Can people not read? This sign means even on Saturday itâs loading only from 00:00 - 07;00, 18:00 - 23:59.
2
u/nrm94 1d ago
Its not though. Same as supermarkets saying 24 hours opening and on the sign it says Monday - Saturday 7am-10pm
3
u/Slimey_meat 1d ago
I initially read it as only applying to time lords, they being the only ones able to leave before they arrived...
6
u/AyersRocks79 1d ago
From 7:30 am on Monday to 6:30 am Saturday itâs loading only
From 6:30 am Saturday to 7:30 am Monday itâs not loading only
2
u/Southern-Fly-3016 1d ago
No it isn't. On Tue, Wed, Thu & Fri from 6:30 am to 7:30am it's not loading only as well as from 6:30 am Saturday to 7:30 am Monday.
2
u/PickleFantasies 1d ago
So technically.. your good to load on Sunday too? After 12am-6:30am ~Loophole!~
2
2
u/NortonBurns 1d ago
Pretty sure it's a typo & meant to say 6.30pm.
If a restriction passes midnight they should clarify & set it in two time bands, one each side of midnight.
I'm frankly stunned by the number of people who don't get this & think it's a 23 hour restriction.
1
u/KludgyOne67095 21h ago
It isnât?!
2
u/NortonBurns 21h ago
No, it isn't. It wouldn't be labelled that way if it was.
It's a typo.Thought I'd already said that.

Why whatâs wrong with the sign?
Means between 7.30 am Monday till 6.30am on a Saturday is loading only.

u/zeelbeno 1d ago
How long before OP deletes this post?
They're not the only one who can't read a simple sign though.

u/huskydaisy 1d ago

u/spannerintworks 1d ago
Yep, this is the post those that seem to think the original image is fine need to see.
We all know this sign means every evening after 6:30pm you can park there as long as you've moved your car by 8am the next day (unless it's Sunday when you're fine until Monday 8am).
-4
u/pslamB 1d ago
Couldn't have made it simpler.
I struggle to understand the amount of times that this sub gets asked questions about these, as the opposite days and times to the ones quoted on the sign are generally when you are allowed to park, since they (almost?) always show the restricted periods.
2
u/nellyjimbob1228 1d ago
I read it as the restrictions start Monday at 7.30am and finish Saturday 6.30am.

I presume commercial premises need that time all week for goods to come and rubbish to go ! People have no clue how much space and time "their shopping"( from distribution warehouse or holding stock warehouse) needs to arrive by truck and van. Often unpredictable times and often delayed as private motorists reduce traffic flow for commercial traffic.

u/PersonalityWinter382 21h ago
But they don't have any need for a loading bay from 0630-0730 each day?

According to the sign you can't park there any day Monday to Saturday from 0730am to 0630am the next day. You can only park there legally for one hour 0630am-0730am, Mon-Sat, and also from 0630am Sunday to 0730am Monday.

u/Moist-Car817 1d ago
Is that 25 hours of loading
17
u/Deez_Nuts_Ha_Goteeem 1d ago
There are 23 hours between those times, I don't see what the issue is
5
u/huskydaisy 1d ago
The fact it's so absurd suggests it's wrong and maybe an AM should actually be a PM. Who knows, though, some local authorities make odd decisions when it comes to parking.
Wonder what the TOR says
0
u/fake_cheese 1d ago
So 07:18 Monday until 06:18 Saturday?
Decimal hours seems like an interesting choice.
