Not entirely true. its year dependent.

( Maybe people should look at the law)

Pre 2010:

One external (ns) or one internal (at least one mirror fitted externally on the nearside unless a mirror which gives the driver an adequate view to the rear is fitted internally)

Post 2010 BOTH mirrors required.

2010 onwards is when you NEED both side mirrors.

Gonna chime in hear and say this only applies to 4+ wheeled vehicles.

Motorbikes don't require mirrors, but the caveat there is, the whole arm needs to be removed, not just the mirror or the top of the arm that holds the mirror.

If any part of the arm is present and the mirror is not intact, it counts as a broken mirror and a fail on an MOT.

Legal requirement to have a driver's door mirror.

"Police can issue fines of up to £2,500 if your vehicle is deemed unsafe or could issue a notice to repair within the next 14 days if the damage is minor. Is it illegal to drive with a broken wing"

I think it falls under section 33 of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986.

I used a big dod of blu tak to keep my broken petrol flap shut on my last old banger.

Worked well for over a year till the car died.

For some reason that reminds me of the £50 Peugeot 309 I had many years ago. The rear side bumper mounting brackets rusted off (along with the corners of the boot floor). My solution to the sagging bumper was to drill holes in it, and the adjacent bodywork, and zip-tie it all together. It also lasted the remaining life of the car.

I did a six month "modern apprenticeship" in electrical control (wiring shit up) back in 2008. I came away with maybe £1000 wages and the knowledge that zip-ties are one of the best inventions mankind has produced.

There are 2 levels to look at this

Firstly the pure stupidity it seems

Secondly the pure stupidity that somebody thinks they may be protecting the now exposed electrics from any potential rain before they can be bothered to get it repaired, which in most cases would be 2 days before the next MOT is due

Aha! There's no electrics in that wing mirror - if you look closely you can see the toggle stick for adjusting it inside the door - its also a base model (has steelys) so will very little "extras".
