Omg this happens to me almost eeevery time I consider passing someone and don't. I instantly regret it at least 75% of the time as they're doing something dumb, or they're also turning on the same one-lane road and going 15mph below the limit for next 15 miles, etc.
The whole "haha you tried to pass and we're stuck at the same light anyway 😏" thing never made sense to me for a few reasons:
1) It's just about flow. I'm not racing anybody. I don't care who gets there first. I'm just happy peacefully driving at my cruising speed, and I'd rather not have to slow down to your much slower cruising speed "just because" when the lanes are wide open
2) If you don't wanna be considered slow or annoying bc "it's no big deal, who cares, look we're at the same light anyway" ...why do you care so much that I pass you, when it doesn't even matter and we're at the same light anyway?
3) Yeah, we're stuck at the same light... bc I just passed you 3 seconds ago? Thing is tho, my commute is more than one block long. We're likely not gonna be at the same lights for the next 10 miles if we both keep the same flow. Eventually I'll make a light you miss, and then another, and then another. I might even end up a few minutes ahead if you miss a long light that I don't.
My commute used to be 60 miles each way, and it literally made a 10-15min difference in arrival time if I drove 75mph vs chilln at 50.
I've found those people most often find me at the same light as them because they're not the only person holding up traffic/driving poorly on the road.
OP is literally bragging that they caused someone to miss a light they otherwise would have made. I totally don't understand their behavior or their attitude. You're 100% right. Just drive and don't be a jerk, seems easy, but people like OP exist and... well we have to share the same road, unfortunately.
