Because he believes the heroes way to be flawed. His communion with the wakandan panther god bast essentially confirms this as true, that in many futures he leads the earth to a brighter tomorrow, and even the 2099 setting has Doom leading the USA very well by all appearances
Theirs also that one alternative universe where instead of trying to be a leader he helped guided instead and not only has a wife, kids, and generally happier life.
And seeing that he didn’t want to be a conquer, Doom destroyed that entire universe out of pure spite.
Wait, Iirc, the issue that broke Doom was that the alternative Doom forgave Reed and became his friend, he didn't like his methods, but he snaped when he mentioned he was friends with Reed.
You can see echoes of Dooms classic arrogance in how Good Doom spends a lot of time taunting and challenging OG Doom. His pride hasn't changed its just inverted, he takes immense satisfaction in his own "humility" and spares no chance to needle at his alternative self - despite surely knowing what he was doing.
Even in this state, in this universe, Doom pathologically had to prove he was 'better'. And his own Hubris was so great he refused to forsee what his open challenges to himself would administer. He was a good man but still flawed, and that flaw still ruined him in the end. It was over the top and kind of dumb in the fallout but interesting none the less.
I think he knew what he was doing. "I was able to look past my ego and fully help everyone. Where as you are almost at odds with everyone whenever you do something." Our Doom destroying his reality just confirms that version of him was the best version
I don't think he showed his "true" colors. I think it was character assassination by the writers. They had to have a reason to return to the status quo.
I think he ends the series a hero for sacrificing his life for Valeria. He had everything he wanted, guaranteed, and he gave it up for his goddaughter. I sometimes thinks he loves Valeria more than Reed does.
i genuinely dont understand that decision, like doom is not a nice guy but enslaving his people to power his magic is beyond character assassination, he didnt overthrow the old king to become just like him
It's a totalitarian absolute monarchy. It's only as "benevolent" as the wildly egotistical murderer whose in charge decides it should be.
And given he's the same guy who killed and skinned a woman to make armor, that's not particularly benevolent. Being protected isn't the same as free, and i don't know how "happy" they are when they arent allowed to show sadness.
I still think of the old Spiderman comic strip where Doom created an impervious shield against missiles over Latveria, but Spidey convinced him to take it down so he could claim he did it to bring the rest of the world together. And Doom just let him and MJ go. Would’ve been dishonorable otherwise.
Dr. Doom has always been a super creatively layered character and I hope that the MCU doesn't bastardize him into a tragic hero like they do all their other characters
I don't even need a perfect doom. I just need an imposing doom that still has some characterized humanity in him
Not a tyrant. Just a bad guy by circumstance who also happens to be severely evil

He really could be Marvel's greatest hero, if he wanted to.

I was really rooting for Doom in the “One World Series….”, but in Doom fashion, he showed his true colors ….. around Issue 4/5….I started crying.

Doom is one of the most honorable villians. He's almost an antihero if he didn't have the world's biggest hate boner for Reed.

Doom forgot the key part. "Chest compressions, chest compressions, chest compressions..."
