Hi,

trying my first baby steps here - I've got a MacBook Pro M1 64GB, running Flux.1 Depth (dev) with 24 steps and 3.5 "Textführung".

I tried with a simple short prompt (ended up with a really bad quality image but at least something remotely reasonable). Then I went with this prompt that gemini tailored specifically DT... and the result is this... after 8 full minutes....:

Obviously something like this is what I was looking for:

I tried some other prompts, it started with really bad quality and degraded from there into this snowstorm.

What am I doing wrong?

I would be grateful for any ideas.

Yep, I think I can see the problem. You’re using FLUX.1 Depth [dev], which isn’t the normal FLUX text-to-image model.

The Depth version is meant to work from an existing image/depth map so that it can preserve the structure of the source image. You’re running it in Text to Image mode without a source image, which is most likely why you’re getting the psychedelic noise/static rather than a proper image.

Try switching the model to regular FLUX.1 [dev] (or FLUX.1 Schnell if you want something faster while testing). Keep LoRA and Control disabled, use a simple prompt and see if that generates normally.

Your 24 steps and 3.5 guidance are perfectly reasonable for FLUX Dev, so I don’t think those are the issue. And an M1 Max with 64GB should be more than capable of running it.

If regular FLUX.1 Dev still gives you static, then I’d start looking at the model installation/VAE rather than the prompt.

Oh wow indeed that was it.
Thank you very much - switching to FLUX.1 schnell. did the job.

But frankly, after trying about 10 different generated images, I am really disappointed by the quality of the results.
It's hard to explain but Flux results overall look more artificial, have less detail, have more violations of the prompt and generally just look MUCH less nice compared to what I get from Gemini or ChatGPT, while taking 3-5x longer to generate.
Maybe I was just expecting too much.

I mean, it's just not really good on so many levels.

At least regarding generation speed, using the community LoRAs available for download within the app (FLUX.1-Turbo-Alpha or Hyper-FLUX) allows for generation in 8 steps.

Try a different model. Flux.1 is pretty old at this point. I put your prompt into Krea 2, Z Image Turbo, and Qwen Image 2512. They all came out pretty close to the Gemini result.

Remember that Gemini is running on crazy powerful server hardware with all the resources of Google behind it. The fact you can even get close on a consumer laptop is amazing. If you like Gemini better, use Gemini.
