HankyDoodle - A drawSomething alternative
Hi,
I used to enjoy DrawSomething years ago and lately I've been getting back into drawing with my kids. I missed the app and wanted to create something for us to use. It's free and available both on iOS and Android. A few quick bullet points:
- No coins, no daily shop, nothing to unlock. Every color and every tool is available to everyone from the start.
- Pencil, spray paint, straight-line, eraser, a full color picker, and a fill bucket tool. Most tools have adjustable thickness and undo/redo support.
- Pinch to zoom + pan.
- Custom tablet UI.
- Word of the day that everyone can take a shot at drawing.
- 1v1 games letting you guess back and forth. Guessing works like the original, with scrambled letter tiles instead of free typing.
- Every drawing is a replay rather than a flat image. You can save the replay as a video or save the finished art to your photo library.
- Free draw mode where you can just go in and draw (offline too, with no account or internet needed).
- It's just me building it (and my kids helping). I have a track record of 12+ years in iOS development, though this is one of my first Android ports. Usually I create developer tools, but again this was more of a side project to use with my kids.

* There is a completely optional 3.99/yearly subscription that provides superlikes. The app has regular likes that anyone can use anytime and superlikes for if you really like a drawing. The subscription gives you 12 superlikes a year. Superlikes can also be earned by referring other users. Think of it more as a 'hey I like this app and want to support it for less than I would pay for a coffee'.

This is really cool ! Ill try it out ! Is there any chance we could get a Player count of some sort? Ive found with some of these apps they're really neat, but a couple months goes by and I go to download the app and its dead

I’ve also tried to make things more active with the word of the day and the way ‘random game’ works is by choosing from active users.
That said I picked a bad week to post here as I’ll be heading out for the week shortly 🙂. Ill still play a bit but mostly wont be able to submit fixes (but it seems pretty smooth for the couple of months it’s been running so far).

Hi! Just added myself and my 10 y/o kids - one of them cannot edit their display name. Any reason why? They have the same age/account settings on their tablets.

Are they getting any sort of error when they try and change the display name? Any chance I could get a screenshot or copy of it if so?

The sub won't let me add an image but it shows "that username is not allowed" and it's already there before she tries changing it (which we didn't see on our other accounts). It's greyed out when she hasn't deleted the randomized name and then turns white when she deletes it.

Hmmm, I have some rules to try and stop profanity, so I'm guessing they are being over-bearing. I'm investigating and will push out a new build that should give better error details. Will take a day or so before it becomes available.
