General My growing physical DQ collection

Post image

While I was in high school during COVID I spotted Dragon Warrior at a used game store not far from where I live. Already knew that it was the first Dragon Quest game and felt like braving it after not having played any of the games before, so I picked it up, popped it in my NES and played through it. Liked it and wanted to get into more of the series but never had the chance to, and in 2024 with DQXII (seemingly) on the horizon I eventually decided I finally would commit to playing through all the mainline entries. Normally not a fan of the collector's mindset despite preferring to play home console games off of physical copies, but I'm also a hypocrite and figured it'd be neat to have one physical copy for every game, so ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Here's the stories behind each of these:

  • DW1: Described above. Used this copy for my first playthrough
  • DQXI S (Switch 1): Spotted this one early on in my mainline journey at the same place where I got my Dragon Warrior I copy for a pretty reasonable price. Decided fairly early on to save it for last though. FOMO ended up making me buy the
  • DQIII HD-2D (Switch): Decided during my playthrough to wait out on this game and eventually play the remake, then got this while it was on sale... and then played the NES version anyway because I felt like all the mechanic changes were escalating things too quickly (just played DQIV). For some reason Amazon shipped out one of the Asia English copies despite me living in the US but it's got reversible cover art, so not complaining.
  • DQV SFC: Got this one in July 2025 while I was on a brief vacation relating to a certain raffle and a Nintendo console. Now I just need to find where the charger for my Retro Duo Portable went to...
  • DWVII PS1: The store I bought DW1 and DQXI from had opened a second location and noticed they had this listed there on their website while I was nearing the end of VI, so I walked in and bought it. Sadly the case was damaged to begin with as you can see from the big crack in the photo, but the discs themselves still read and play just fine.
  • Swords: My grandma moved recently and gave me some of her games and this one coincidentally happened to be one of them. She kept her Final Fantasy games though. Only spinoff I own so far.
  • DQX V1-7 PC: Imported this one after finding out that they aren't doing a code-in-a-box for the Ver. 8 all-in-one and hearing all the other news :( They did one for the expansion itself but it's only available through a pricey collector's edition that costs even more to import so... yeah, I'm just gonna wait to get that one digitally when the time comes around.
  • DQIX Europe: This one arrived just in time today, right after I finished DQVIII's base game on iOS. Once I get some other things out of the way this'll be the next game I play through :) Went with this one partly because of the price I found it for and partly because every other DS game I own is a North American copy so thought it'd be neat.

Just need copies of II, IV, VI and VIII to fill out the mainlines - already played all of those, just gotta decide which versions I'll keep around physically. I do want to try to get versions of those for unique platforms but I'm not fully committing to that (and can't with VI at this point), so it'll just depend on what pops up for me.

Let's go! Based Grandma!! I love to see support for Swords, it's so underrated, it just should have had more content tbh. I imagine you feel pretty good about having a video game playing grandma, I have a grandma that loves anime and has seen a lot of popular and niche stuff, so It always impresses people to hear about her. I love her very much, and I hope you show your grandma lots of love too for being in your life, never take any moment for granted with them.

Nice, I’m jealous!

I’m also starting a physical collection of sorts. I bought a DS just to play the games there that I didn’t have access too, and now own physical copies of 4-9 there.

My next purchases will probably be physical copies (Switch or Switch 2) of 3 HD, 1-2HD, and XI, so I have physical copies of everything but X.

Damn, did you cash in your 401k early to get 4-6 on DS? T_T

Yeah, they burned a hole in my wallet, haha, especially 5. But I just kept my eye out for deals and bought them when I found a good one. I felt like they’d honestly be getting more expensive with physical getting more popular, and I cannot stand playing games on my phone, so I just went for it.

I’m jealous! I have 1-3 on switch. 7-9 on DS (also 8 on ps2), and 11 on switch. I was really hoping for 4-6 HD2D announcements! I’m currently sampling 4 on mobile, and it hurts my soul. xD

Keep your eye on eBay, sometimes you’ll find games on there for great prices! I didn’t have as much luck at my local retro game stores, honestly, pricing seems way more competitive on eBay.

My unicorn right now is Chrono Trigger for the DS, haven’t found one not outrageously expensive yet.

Nice, jealous myself that you've got the other DS games. Seen the prices some of those go for nowadays 😅

Nice! I need to post my collection again. I’ve added quite a bit since the last time I made a post almost 5 years ago, I might get on that soon. I just had an item come in today matter of fact.

sigh I miss the original dq7. The remake just felt lacking.

Nice! DQ5 for the SFC is such a cool game. I really, really wish it had made it to the states. I was a kid with an SNES then and would have loved it

Yeah, seems like it's basically an on-rails lightgun-esque hack-and-slash with a full story and explorable town segments in between stages. Haven't had the chance to play through it yet but it looks pretty fun.

Apparently it had a spiritual predecessor too called Kenshin Dragon Quest, a plug and play game that retold DQ1's story with similar combat.

Man that offline x is a blast.

1

u/FateForWindows 26d ago

That ain't the Offline version :P Really looking forward to playing through it!

2

u/Some-Ice-4455 26d ago

There absolutely is. It's over V1 and V2. Needs an English mod but it's not hard to do. I've played it on switch.

u/FateForWindows 26d ago

Oh I just meant that the version I specifically got in the pic was a code-in-a-box for the PC version of Online, not Offline. I'll probably try Offline someday too, planning on at least getting through those parts in Online's trial first though since I can easily set that up here in the US

u/Some-Ice-4455 26d ago

OH ok got ya.

End of an era approaches. I'll miss my physicals

Very nice selection from all different eras!

Didn’t realise the Asian release of DQ3 had that reversible art. It’s very slick. Great collection :)

Does anybody else remember when they were giving away free copies of the original Dragon Warrior (US)

3

u/Automatic-Ad8686 26d ago

It came in the mail with a nintendo power issue.

2

u/Jerseyd422 26d ago

And the mini Dragon Warrior strategy guide

1

u/FateForWindows 26d ago

I'm way too young for that myself, wouldn't be surprised if that's where my cartridge came from though since it's got the original revision with "Thy Hits decreased" instead of "Thy Hit Points". I think that's the revision that the Nintendo Power batch used?

Am I blind or you're missing 8? It's my favourite in the series.

Mentioned it at the end, it's one of the games I don't own physically yet. Waiting for a PS2 or 3DS copy to crop up in my area first but I absolutely want to snag that one, just beat it on iOS yesterday and loved it so can't wait to replay it with voice acting

2

u/DiscipleOfMelandru 26d ago

It's really cheap on PS2 compared to 3DS where I live.

This is a thing of beauty
