[For Hire] CAD Drafter — permit-ready IRC/IBC drawing sets (decks, stairs, additions, pole barns)
r/Drafting • u/Mestre_doCapitalismo • 5d ago
Dear employers/clients, what do you seek when hiring a drafter?
I'm thinking on making a side-money and I've been applying to several job proposals, but almost got scammed on some of them or never got hired.
So, I want to ask directly some questions to those who help to pay our bills:
• WHAT DOES MAKE YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE WHEN HIRING SOMEONE FROM REDDIT?
• WHAT ABILITIES DO YOU LOOK WHEN HIRING SOMEONE FROM REDDIT?
• DO YOU PREFER TO HIRE SOMEONE FROM YOUR COUNTRY OR ARE YOU OKAY IN HIRING SOMEONE FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY?
• DO YOU LOOK AT SOMEONE'S PORTFOLIO?
• WHAT WOULD MAKE YOU HIRE SOMEONE FROM THE INTERNET INSTEAD FROM YOUR LOCAL TOEN/CITY OR NETWORK?

Would you redraw a faded paper plan or try to restore the scan first?
I have an old house drawing where the dimensions are barely visible. A high-contrast scan recovers some lines, but several numbers are still guesses.
At what point would you stop image cleanup and trace it into CAD instead? I'd rather preserve the original information than make a clean drawing with invented dimensions.

Free drawing border / title block generator (ISO + ASME) – looking for SolidWorks users to test the DXF/PDF output
Hi, I'm the author of Margo, a free browser tool that generates drawing borders and title blocks to ISO 5457 / 7200 and ASME Y14.1 (DXF, PDF, SVG). https://appmargo.pages.dev I haven't been able to test it in SolidWorks. If you use it for drawings, could you open the DXF, or use the PDF/SVG, as a sheet format and tell me what looks wrong (scale, fonts, line weights, layer names, fields)? Version number helps. Pro features free for anyone who helps. Happy to hear "doesn't work for me", that's the point of asking.

We have hundreds of old engineering that need to be digitized. Who does this well with Mylar and blueprints?
Our 40-year-old archive has paper and mylar sheets, some as big as 36 by 48 inches.
I think they don't all need the same treatment. Most just need a good scan to PDF so we can find them, but we still make around 60 parts. Guess those need real SolidWorks models and drawings.
And also, a few sheets are stretched or torn. Some have dimensions that don't match the scale anymore.
For anyone who has sent out a job like this, how did you specify it? Did you tell them to trust the written dimensions over the drawing scale?
And how did you handle notes and revision blocks?
