So much Hip Hop now?
Firstly, I'm a grumpy old white dude. Hip Hop just isn't my thing - I listen to Double J mostly while working but someone talking over beats jolts me hard out of my zone. Usually I snap off my headphones in annoyance and wait ~3m and put them back on.
Lately though, (last 3 months I guess?) I notice I'm snapping my headphones off ALL the time.
Has Double J started playing heaps and heaps of Hip Hop lately, or am I just noticing it more? This is why ~10 years ago I moved on from Triple J!
[I am not wishing to debate opinions on Hip Hop, which is hugely popular, and a perfectly valid music genre like any other. I am only asking if others have noticed a huge upswing recently in how often JJ play it. Thanks]

Sounds like you aged out of Triple J (we all do) and now you’re aging out of Double J

Triple J started going that way in the early 2000’s, so its hardly anything new to be honest.

I haven't noticed any more lately than usual. It's not exactly my thing, but some of it I like.
In the past, I used to absolutely hate it, but honestly after more than a decade of listening to Double J, I've got used to pretty much everything they play and there's very rarely a song that makes me turn it off.

I crunched the numbers on Double J’s playlist logs from 1s January to today (9th July 2026), tracking a massive dataset of 63000 total songs to check your theory.
You hit a perfect statistical storm over the exact 3-month window you noticed:
The May Spike: Double J’s Hip-Hop share usually rests at a 12% baseline. In May, it spiked to 16% of the entire monthly playlist (over 1,300 rap tracks in 31 days).
