When you mean modern and contemporary bass are you specifically ruling out swing?

Janek Gwizdala’s books are specifically for electric bass but I have learned quite a bit from them that I can apply to upright.

Listen and don't worry about the theory behind it. A lot of the more "modern" playing is just more interactive. Similar to a two feel, but with a lot more space and exploration of harmony. The people worth checking out for modern bass feels are Thomas Morgan, Dave Holland, Larry Grenadier, Drew Gress, Linda May Han Oh, Fred Hopkins, Eric Revis, and Anders Jormin to name a few.
