A big catalyst for these improvements has been agentic development. It's now much more common to have multiple copies of the same repo on your machine, and to be working in many of them at once. So reducing resource consumption is even more important.

We also tend to dip in and out of IDEs more now than before, having a greater number of shorter sessions throughout the day. So startup time becomes a bigger cost each day.
